STORY 2: Boss & Intern After Hours

1405 Words
The office was dead silent at 9:30 PM, with only the hum of the air conditioning and the glow of computer screens cutting through the darkness. Damien Black slammed his fist on the conference table, his jaw tight with frustration. “Lila, this report is complete garbage,” he snapped, his deep voice echoing through the empty floor. “I told you this presentation had to be perfect. What the hell were you thinking?” Lila stood frozen on the other side of the table, her heart pounding hard in her chest. She had been working late for three straight weeks on this project, sacrificing sleep and her personal life, and now her boss was tearing her work apart in front of her. “I double-checked everything, Mr. Black,” she replied, trying to keep her voice steady even though anger was rising inside her. “The numbers are accurate. If there’s a problem, it’s not because I didn’t work hard on it.” Damien ran a hand through his hair, his sharp eyes locking onto hers. He looked exhausted but still incredibly commanding in his tailored shirt with the sleeves rolled up. “Hard work isn’t enough if the final product is sloppy,” he said harshly, though there was something else burning in his gaze. “You’ve been here for months now. I expected better from you, Lila.” Lila felt a rush of heat to her face, a mix of embarrassment and strange attraction to his intensity. She had always found Damien Black intimidatingly attractive, his confidence, his sharp mind, the way he commanded every room he entered. But she had never allowed herself to think about it. Until now. “Maybe if you gave me clearer instructions instead of just demanding perfection at the last minute, I could deliver exactly what you want,” she shot back, surprising herself with her boldness. Damien stepped around the table, moving closer to her. The air between them suddenly felt thick and charged. “You’ve been pushing back more lately,” he said, his voice lower now. “Most interns would have apologized and fixed it immediately. But not you.” Lila’s pulse quickened as he stopped just a foot away from her. She could smell his cologne, feel the heat radiating from his body. “Maybe I’m tired of being treated like I’m incompetent when I’ve been giving this job everything I have,” she said, her voice shaking slightly. “I respect you, Mr. Black, but I won’t let you speak to me like I’m worthless.” Damien’s eyes darkened as he looked down at her. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The tension that had been building for weeks, every late night, every lingering look, every accidental brush of hands, was finally breaking through. “You think I don’t see how hard you work?” he said, his voice dropping even lower. “I notice everything about you, Lila. Every detail. Every time you stay late. Every time you push yourself.” Lila’s breath caught in her throat. She felt both angry and strangely thrilled by his words. “What are you saying?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Damien took one more step closer, their bodies now only inches apart. “I’m saying I’ve been watching you closely for months,” he admitted, his eyes never leaving hers. “And it’s driving me f*****g crazy.” Lila’s heart hammered wildly. She knew this was dangerous territory. He was her boss. She was just an intern. But the way he was looking at her made her feel more alive than she had in a long time. “I… I’ve felt it too,” she confessed softly, her cheeks burning. “Even though I know it’s wrong.” The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken desire. Damien’s breathing was as ragged as hers. Suddenly, Damien reached out, pulled her close, and kissed her hard. Lila kissed him back for one intense moment, her hands gripping his shirt, before she pushed him away, shocked at what she had just done. Just then, the elevator dinged loudly in the distance, someone was still in the building and heading toward their floor. Lila’s lips still tingled from the sudden, intense kiss as she stepped back quickly, her chest rising and falling fast. “What the hell was that?” she whispered, her voice shaky with shock and lingering heat. Damien stood there, eyes dark and breathing heavy, looking like he was fighting every instinct to pull her back into his arms. “I’ve wanted to do that for months,” he said, his voice low and rough. “Every time you stayed late, every time you challenged me in meetings, every damn time you looked at me like that.” Lila’s mind was spinning. She could still feel the warmth of his body pressed against hers, the firm pressure of his lips, and the undeniable spark that had jumped between them. Part of her wanted to run. Another part wanted him to kiss her again. “This is insane,” she said, pressing a hand to her forehead. “You’re my boss. I’m your intern. If anyone finds out…” Damien took a small step closer, but stopped when she held up her hand. “I know the risks,” he replied, his tone serious but filled with frustration. “Believe me, I’ve told myself the same thing every single day. But I can’t pretend anymore, Lila. There’s something here. You feel it too. I know you do.” Lila’s heart was racing so hard she could barely think straight. She had admired Damien from afar for months, his sharp mind, his commanding presence, the way he could dominate a boardroom without raising his voice. But she had never allowed herself to imagine this. “I do feel it,” she admitted quietly, her cheeks burning. “But that doesn’t make it right. I’ve worked so hard to get here. If this gets out, it could ruin both of us.” Damien ran a hand through his hair, clearly struggling with the same conflict. “I’m not asking you to throw everything away,” he said, his voice softening. “But I’m tired of acting like there’s nothing between us. Tell me honestly, if we weren’t in this office right now, would you still be pushing me away?” Lila looked up at him, her emotions swirling wildly. Anger at his arrogance, fear of the consequences, and a deep, undeniable attraction that had been building for weeks. “I don’t know,” she whispered. “But we can’t do this. Not here. Not like this.” Before Damien could respond, the sound of the elevator dinged again, much closer this time. Footsteps echoed down the hallway, heading straight toward the executive floor. Lila’s eyes widened in panic. “Someone’s coming. We need to separate. Now.” Damien glanced toward the door, his body still tense with unresolved desire. “This isn’t over,” he said firmly, his eyes locking onto hers with intense promise. “We’re going to talk about this. Soon.” Lila quickly smoothed down her clothes and moved to the other side of the conference table, trying to compose herself. Her heart was still racing from the kiss, from his confession, and from the terrifying possibility of being caught. The footsteps grew louder. A security guard appeared in the doorway, shining his flashlight into the room. “Everything alright in here, Mr. Black?” the guard asked, looking between them curiously. Damien straightened his shirt and gave a calm, professional nod. “Just finishing up a late project. We’re wrapping up now.” The guard nodded and continued his rounds, but the interruption left a heavy silence in the room. Lila grabbed her bag, her hands still shaking. “I should go. This was a mistake.” Damien watched her with an unreadable expression, but his eyes burned with the same intensity from moments earlier. “This wasn’t a mistake,” he said quietly as she headed toward the door. “And we both know it.” Lila paused at the doorway, torn between what she knew was right and what she desperately wanted. She glanced back at him one last time before walking quickly toward the elevator, her mind racing with everything that had just happened.
