Sophia’s stomach dropped like she was on a rollercoaster.
She quickly jumped back and smoothed down her short yellow sundress with trembling fingers, trying to look normal even though her heart felt like it was going to burst out of her chest.
Dr. Reed moved fast, grabbing his stethoscope and stepping in front of her to shield her flushed face. “Come in,” he called out, his voice impressively calm despite everything.
The nurse opened the door wider and poked her head inside with a polite smile. “Sorry to interrupt, Dr. Reed. I just wanted to check if you needed anything for the next patient. You’ve been in here a while.”
