Am I in another world? I can't help but wonder if what is happening is real.
Every popular guy on our campus has been asking me to be their date at the upcoming ball.
The basketball captain;
The student organization president;
The son of the campus president;
And all the campus heartthrobs you can imagine.
And I think it is the result of Rhythm's annoying fake confession last week. I thought that issue would just vanish after some time. But no, I became an instant competition.
Of course, that's not the only thing that bothers me. Dealing with them was not easy, but I could just answer them with a big "NO" right away. The harder part is dealing with their admirers. They could skin me alive by just looking at me. And I hated it.
I'm home! Finally, a long tiring day.
Just after my eyes closed, someone flicked my forehead.
"Ouch!" I shouted. I stood up quickly and saw Rhythm laughing his a*s out.
"You're so loud my daughter! I almost had a heart attack." It was my mother while holding her chest. She was in the kitchen preparing Rhythm's favorite food.
"I'm sorry Mom, but Rhythm flicked my forehead, and I was just hurt. That's why." I said to defend myself.
"That's enough, Iris, just come here and help me set the table." My mom replied.
I went to the kitchen while glaring at Rhythm, who was still laughing and sticking his tongue out.... like a kid.
It's dinner time! I was quietly eating when Rhythm suddenly kicked my feet. He was on the opposite side of the table and was sitting beside my father, while my mother was beside me.
"What?" I whispered.
"So who will be your date?" he said. Silence entered the room. I almost got choked by his out of nowhere question. Thankfully, my mom gave me water.
"What date" my mom asked.
"Iris was invited by so many to be their date at the ball next week. She is the center of attraction on our campus as of the moment." Rhythm stated
"What about you? You did not invite her?" My father asked.
"Nope, because I know that I will be her partner no matter what" He answered with a smirk.
"Wow, that's confidence!" I replied while slowly clapping my hands.
"Well, I only trust you anyway, Rhythm, but it's Iris' choice." My mom said.
"Rhythm, son, you will be her partner," my father said.
"Daaad?!!" I exclaimed.
"Discussion's done, either go with Rhythm, or don't go. That's it!" my Dad replied.
"Okay, fine." I sighed.
"Since we don't have classes tomorrow, I will accompany you on your shopping." Rhythm said.
"No, I have plans with Gayle" I replied. He shrugged as a reply.
After we ate, I walked Rhythm to the door.
"Okay, I don't owe you anything now." I said.
He suddenly stopped and walked close to me. I stepped back until i felt the wall behind me.
He came closer and whispered, "This is only your partial payment, Iris."
He held my shoulder and pulled me closer until his nose almost touched mine.
I closed my eyes, not knowing what to do. Then, when I slowly opened my eyes, he was gone. I felt my heart skipping a beat for a second.
What is this I'm feeling? I can't explain. Why? When did this start? I sighed and walked to my room.
As I laid down on my bed, Rhythm suddenly crossed my mind. I caught myself smiling for no reason.
"s**t! What is happening? So gross!" I said, while slapping my face.I cannot stop thinking about the coming ball. Am I annoyed or happy because he will be my partner? I don't know, it's not like I liked someone else. Yeah, maybe I had a crush on Keith, band mate of Rhythm, their bassist. But that was just a crush, and he didn't even invite me to be his date. So I really don't think about him that much. Rhythm is much cooler than him, he smiles a lot more than Keith.
But why am I comparing them? What is happening to me?
I rolled on my bed and became a burrito. I stayed like that for a while, and I didn't notice the time and fell asleep like that. Thank God I wasn't suffocated.
It was morning and I called Gayle, "Hey where are you?"
"I'm near your house." She said
"Okay" I replied, carried my things and waited outside for Gayle.
She was driving her Civic, my rich girl.
We went to the mall to look for something to wear for the upcoming ball. As usual, Gayle chose something sexy and slightly revealing, which was really suited to her since she has a gorgeous body. I chose something elegant. A long, turtle-neck plain black dress, fitting onto my body, with long sleeves and slightly exposing my back to my waist. I can say that I do have a great body too, but Gayle's a topnotch. She was blessed.
On the day of the ball, dad drove me to the place where the event would be held.
I saw how everyone prepared for this event. They were all styled differently, flaunting all their designer pieces. Everyone wanted to take the spotlight. Trying to make a statement just with their glamour without saying a word.
Sounds like the event had that perfectly polished vibe, especially with a perfectionist student president at the helm! Really a “wow” factor like everything down to the smallest detail is carefully thought out. The lighting must’ve made a huge difference—setting the right mood can make everything captivating.
I walked towards the wine table and got some for me to enjoy while waiting for Gayle. Then suddenly a guy approached me.
