The Distance Grows

232 Words
Aurora stood at the edge of the nursery, staring at the mural she’d spent weeks painting—a golden sun rising over rolling hills, fluffy white clouds dotting a pastel-blue sky. It was perfect, a hopeful symbol of the life she wanted to give their child. Yet, as she stepped back to admire her work, the emptiness in the room felt oppressive. The crib was ready, the shelves lined with baby books and stuffed animals, but Sebastian’s absence left an aching void. Every brushstroke, every decoration was a lonely reminder of how far apart they’d grown. Sebastian had once been her anchor, the force that grounded her in the chaos of their forbidden love. Now, he was slipping further out of reach. Work Before Family: His late nights at the office became a constant. “The company’s expanding,” he would say when she questioned him. “I have to stay ahead of things if we want to secure the baby’s future.” A House Full of Silence: Even when he was home, he was preoccupied. His phone buzzed constantly, pulling his attention away during dinners and silencing the rare moments they spent together. Aurora tried to hide her growing unease, but each missed appointment and half-hearted excuse chipped away at her resolve. She found herself second-guessing everything—her worth, their love, and whether the sacrifices she’d made were worth it.
