Aurora began to notice patterns she couldn’t ignore.
Texts at Odd Hours: His phone buzzed late at night, and he would glance at the screen before quickly silencing it.
Unfamiliar Names: She saw a name pop up on his phone one evening—Sophia. Aurora knew she was his assistant, but something about the frequency of her messages didn’t sit right.
Her mind spiraled, replaying their history. Hadn’t they started this way? Secret messages, stolen moments, and promises they couldn’t keep?
One night, Sebastian’s laptop was left open on the kitchen counter. Aurora hesitated, her fingers hovering over the trackpad. She didn’t want to be this person, snooping through his things, but the knot in her stomach told her she had to know.
The email was at the top of his inbox:
"I’ll book the hotel for Friday. Can’t wait to see you again."
The sender: Sophia.
Aurora’s world tilted. Her breath caught in her throat as her vision blurred with tears. Not again, she thought. I can’t go through this again.
When Sebastian came home that night, she was waiting in the living room, the laptop open on the coffee table.
“We need to talk,” she said, her voice cold and steady.
Sebastian froze when he saw the screen, his face draining of color.
“Aurora, I can explain—”
“Don’t,” she interrupted, her voice rising. “Don’t insult me by lying. How long has this been going on?”
He took a step toward her, his hands raised in defense. “It’s not what it looks like—”
“It’s exactly what it looks like!” she screamed, her voice breaking. “You’ve been distant for months, missing appointments, staying out late. And now this? I gave up everything for you, Sebastian. Everything. And this is how you repay me?”
Sebastian’s shoulders sagged, guilt written all over his face. “I messed up,” he admitted. “I was scared, overwhelmed. It was stupid. It didn’t mean anything.”
Aurora’s laugh was bitter, laced with pain. “That’s what you said about us, remember? When we started. And look where it got us.”
She turned away, tears streaming down her face. “I can’t do this anymore, Sebastian. I won’t.”
As she walked away, Sebastian called after her, his voice breaking. “Aurora, please—”
But she didn’t look back.
