The stress of the situation soon took a physical toll on Aurora. One morning, as she struggled to get out of bed, a sharp pain shot through her abdomen. She gasped, clutching her belly as her vision blurred.
Claire found her moments later, pale and trembling. “Aurora, what’s wrong?”
“I don’t know,” Aurora said weakly. “Something’s not right.”
Claire didn’t hesitate. She called for an ambulance, staying by Aurora’s side as they raced to the hospital. Aurora lay on the stretcher, fear gripping her heart as the paramedics reassured her that her baby’s heartbeat was strong.
As she was wheeled into the maternity ward, her phone buzzed. It was Sebastian. Claire must have called him. She hesitated before answering, her voice weak but firm.
“Are you okay? I’m on my way,” Sebastian said, his voice filled with panic.
“I don’t know,” Aurora replied. “Just... don’t make this worse.”
.....
Sebastian burst into the hospital room not long after, his hair disheveled, his tie loosened. His eyes searched the room until they landed on Aurora, lying on the hospital bed, hooked up to monitors. Relief flooded his face, but it was quickly replaced by guilt.
“Aurora,” he said, rushing to her side. “I’m so sorry. For everything. I never meant for it to come to this.”
She looked at him, her expression unreadable. “Why are you here, Sebastian?”
He knelt beside her, his hands clasping hers. “Because I love you. Because I can’t lose you or our baby. I know I’ve made unforgivable mistakes, but I swear, I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”
Aurora pulled her hand away, her voice sharp despite her exhaustion. “You don’t get to make this about you, Sebastian. You don’t get to show up when things fall apart and pretend everything’s fine.”
Sebastian flinched but didn’t argue. He knew she was right.
