Dawn broke not with light, but with a cold, oppressive fog that crept through the subterranean halls of the sanctuary.
The heavy iron door clicked open. Kaelen stood in the doorway, flanked by two elder witches whose faces were hidden beneath heavy indigo cowls. In Kaelen’s hands sat a folded set of stark white robes, immaculate and void of any adornment.
"It is time," Kaelen said softly, her eyes avoiding Elora’s gaze.
Elora didn't argue. She changed into the linen robes, feeling the cool fabric press against her skin like a burial shroud. Silas’s warning echoed in her mind with every step she took down the twisting stone corridors: *Do not drink it. Force your blood to burn first.*
They led her into the grand amphitheater. The central black pool had been drained, revealing a massive obsidian basin carved with intricate, glowing runes. Surrounding the perimeter, dozens of witches stood in a tight circle, their voices joined in a low, rhythmic chant that vibrated through the stone floor and rattled Elora's teeth.
At the edge of the basin stood High Priestess Morwen, holding a curved silver dagger and an ornate iron goblet filled with a thick, smoking crimson liquid.
"Step forward, child of the thorn," Morwen commanded, her voice cutting cleanly through the chanting.
Elora stepped into the shallow depression of the basin. The air was suffocatingly thick with the scent of ozone, dried nightshade, and raw magic.
"Your lineage is a blight," Morwen continued, stepping to the edge of the rim. "It carries the arrogance of the night and the corruption of immortal blood. But through the Coven's grace, that blood will be bound to our will. You shall be the blade, and we shall be the hand that wields it."
Morwen extended the iron goblet down toward her. "Drink of the dragon's root, and let your will yield to the circle."
Elora looked down at the dark, swirling liquid inside the cup. She could feel the ambient magic of the chant pressing inward against her temples, trying to dull her senses and force her knees to the stone.
She looked up, meeting Morwen's cold, expectant eyes.
"No," Elora said.
The chanting faltered for a fraction of a second. Morwen’s eyes narrowed into sharp, dangerous slits. "This is not a negotiation, girl. Drink, or we break your mind and pour it down your throat."
"I said no," Elora repeated.
Instead of reaching for the goblet, Elora slammed her right hand into the center of the obsidian basin.
Remembering the terror in Oakhaven, the burning in her palms, and the agonizing memory of her mother’s death, she reached deep inside herself—past her fear, past her human hesitation—and dragged the raw, volatile heat in her marrow to the surface.
*Let it burn.*
A violent spike of silver-red lightning erupted from her palm, tearing straight into the obsidian basin.
The ancient runes carved into the stone didn't glow—they shattered. A shockwave of pure, unrefined crimson force blasted outward from the center of the room.
Morwen gasped as the iron goblet was blown from her grip, the dark liquid splashing uselessly against the stone. The surrounding witches were thrown backward, their chant dissolving into shrieks as the shockwave shattered the surrounding stone ledges and extinguished every torch in the amphitheater.
Elora stood in the center of the ruined basin, her white robes billowing around her, her eyes blazing with an unholy, luminescent silver light. The air around her crackled with raw power.
From the dark upper arches of the amphitheater, a quiet chuckle echoed through the settling dust.
Silas leaned against a stone pillar above, watching the chaos with a wicked, satisfied smile. "Well," he whispered into the shadows, "that's one way to turn down an invitation."
