Rory’s only friends in high school were Kelly, Tiffany, and Kim. She and Kim were friends because while Kim’s family had some money, she was still not as well-to-do as the others. Rory was the only person poorer than her. As the rumours in the school got worse, Kelly and Tiffany used their popularity and stood up for Rory. It helped her a lot during this time.
Very quickly, it was time for their first prom, the Junior Prom. Rory didn’t have many friends because of her background. While Kim and Rory were figuring out if they would be attending prom, Kelly and Tiffany invited them along, including a shopping trip to the the most popular luxury shop in town - Cellabrity. It is where drinks and couture come together.
When the girls arrived, it was clear that Kelly and Tiffany were regulars. The staff rushed up to them, “Hi Miss Sloan. Hi Miss Evans. How can we help you today?” The rest of the staff rushed to shut the shop down while others prepared drinks and snacks for them.
‘Wow, I guess this is how rich people shop…” Rory thought to herself, ‘but… I guess I am rich now. I can never get used to this.’
“Take a seat, girls!” Tiffany gestured to Rory and Kim like a queen would. Tiffany was the classy one, always dressed up like she’s royalty. She always treated people with manners but for some reason, she is always close to Seth. This always baffles Rory. On the other hand, she seems to keep James at a distance. ‘Maybe she is afraid of falling for James too. After all, they would be a great match. The rich and kind couple.’
Kelly wasted no time in finding the right gown for Rory. “Don’t worry about me, I’m easy, I always find something. Otherwise, my mum would have a way too. You should find something yourself and shut the mouths of those idiots at school.” Kelly quipped.
While they were shopping, there was suddenly commotion at the entrance. Turns out, it is the means girls in school, Virginia and Valerie. “What do you mean the shop is closed? We are your most important customers! Do you not know who my parents are? We are one of the richest families in town. Let me see who is inside!”
Of course Valerie kicked up a fuss. She is known for flaunting her family’s wealth, something she did no work for. Virginia on the other hand is just her sidekick that she brings everywhere, to make herself look better.
“And here I am thinking who was it that is closing the shop for shopping, it is you girls and your charity cases.” Valerie didnt care to mince her words. Valerie does that care about either of the girls but she showed some respect to Tiffany. This is because Tiffany’s family is as rich as hers and most importantly, she has had a crush on Tiffany’s brother Theo since middle school.
“Tiffany, you sure you dont want to join me and Virginia instead? Ditch these boring girls. They are not going to be able to afford the classy pieces.”
“No, thanks. I have the money and they have the class you and Virginia dont have. So, no.” Tiffany hit back, very classy.
To get back at the girls, Valerie asked for all the dresses in Kelly’s hands. “Those dresses, put them on my tab! I dont want their dirty hands spoiling those designer pieces.”
“I am very sorry, Miss Anderson. You have yet to settle last month’s bill and I am not authorised to extend any of the good will. Please forgive me.” The staff replied Valerie, causing her tremendous embarrassment. Before she could give the staff a hard time, Rory stepped in.
“Hi, Ma’am… do you take card?” Rory whipped out her black card. For a moment there, all the girls were caught off guard and silenced. They have definitely seen a black card but neither of them ever came close to owning one!
“…Y-yes, we do. Miss… How should you address you, miss?” The staff finally came back to her senses and was wondering how she missed out on this obviously wealthy girl. Was she new in town? Why have they never seen her before?
“Just call me Rory. My last name doesnt matter.”
“Yes, Miss Rory. Would you like to pay for all the pieces that Miss Sloan has in her hands?”
“No. I want to pay off Valerie’s bill from last month.”
Valerie was surprised! “Oh, you sure know your place but dont expect a ‘thank you’ from me. I will however, allow you to join us to shop. And…”
Before Valerie can finish her speech, “No, thanks. I will not be joining the both of you.” Rory turned to the staff, “Ma’am, after I pay off her bill from the last month, could you make sure that there will be no more disturbance to the rest of our shopping session? I would like the both of them to leave. Otherwise, I will be happy to bring my business elsewhere. Thanks.” Rory finished with a smile. Valerie on the other hand, was very embarrassed and could not leave the shop fast enough.
“Where did that black card come from, woman?” Kelly loved that Rory got back and those mean girls and even Tiffany gave her a pat on her back. Rory did not say much and simply laughed it off quietly. Someone else was also unusually quiet. While Kim was glad to see the mean girls leave but she was jealous of Rory’s black card. It made her wonder if the rumour about her being a sugar baby.
Kelly picked a olive green dress, Tiffany picked a black one. They chose a white one for Rory, and Kim chose a blue dress. Everyone had a good time choosing their gowns and decided to come back another day to help Rory with her accessories. The rest of the girls have some they can borrow from their mums and they know Rory doesnt. All the more an excuse to come shopping again. Now, with Rory’s black card, she can get anything they can imagine.
On the way home, Rory decided to give her grandparents a group call. “Hi, this is Rory. Are all of you free for dinner tonight?”
“Of course, my dear. We will make time. Where should we have dinner?” Her maternal grandma responded first. Her voice was filled with so much excitement, it was hard to miss.
“If all of you are ok, would you want to come to apartment that all of you chipped in for me? I… I would like to make dinner for all of you.”
