“What do you mean we don’t have enough wood chopped yet?” Cal inquires of his Beta.
“Well, it appears the teens that were supposed to be helping wondered away after some of the pretty she-wolves.”
Groaning, “Ok Zane, hang on, I got this.”
Caelan calls to Murphy, “hey Murph, we need to get out wandering hormonal teens back here to work, or these fires will not be ready for tonight.”
“OK human.” Using his dominant wolf growl Murphy calls to all the young men that were supposed to be helping Cal and Zane.
When Cal cleared his mind from talking to his wolf he noticed about 20 of the teens returning on the run with red faces.
Cal and Zane heard a chorus of “Sorry Alpha, Sorry Beta.”
Laughing, Zane mutters under his breath to Cal, “Oh to be young and think you love every female you come across.”
Shaking his head to hide his chuckle at Zane’s words, “The faster we get this done the faster we can go and find the females, work in teams of 4. We have 5 fire pits spread out through the back grounds and gardens. Make sure you stack enough wood to keep those fires going till two am. Zane and I will start by chopping the trees you bring back down to size. When you have collected enough, make sure stack what Zane and I have chopped. If we all work as a team we should be done with this in a couple of hours and you have plenty of time to find your date for tonight if you haven’t already. Got it?”
“Yes, Sir.” The boys yell standing looking at the Alpha and Beta.
“Well, what are you waiting for, off you go! Chop, Chop.” Zane yells.
“Were we ever that stupid Cal?”
“Nope, we were smart enough to get out of the work we were given by the Luna for these events.” Laughing, they each grabbed an axe. Working together they were able to quickly knock out the first pile of wood giving them time to take a break until the boys brought back the next set.
Halfway through the 3rd pile of wood Cal’s phone sounds from his back pocket.
“Alpha Caelan speaking.” Cal answers his phone.
“Alpha. It’s Xander. We have met up with 2 warriors from the Brownsville area. We found the car with Grant Sander’s ID, tuxedo, and luggage still in the vehicle. The SUV is severely damaged from a T-bone hit and appears to have rolled off of the roadway. There is blood on the driver’s seat sir, also a bullet hole in the side of the passenger front seat on the driver’s side. Like someone shot into the vehicle but missed Grant. He is no where to be found. I should also tell you that the location of the vehicle, it’s impossible to hit a car in the side like that, it didn’t happen at an intersection. Someone was laying in wait and ambushed him, sir.”
“Thank you Xander, send those men home and you and Lincoln gather as much evidence and information you can from the crash site before coming home.”
“You got it Alpha.” Cal disconnects the line.
“Zane, finish here with the boys. I need to find Adara.”
“I heard Cal. Go and do what you need to do. I got this covered.”
“Thanks man.” Cal says as he walks towards the kitchen to find Adara.
Cal walks into the kitchen and is stunned at the amount of work the kitchen crew has accomplished already. It appears they are hours ahead of schedule but he isn’t surprised since Adara was in charge.
Cal spots Adara surrounded by a group of young ladies as she is showing them something. Intrigued he walks over to see what they are up to.
“Moira, I didn’t know mom roped you into kitchen duties for this party.” Cal laughs at his sister.
“Actually brothers, Mom didn’t. I couldn’t stay away from the smells coming from here and decided to stay and help get things done. Come here.” Moira grabs her brother’s hand and leads him to the cupcake tree that is already complete with who knows how many cupcakes on them. “Aren’t these adorable!”
“Wow. I don’t think the cupcakes have ever looked this pretty.”
“I know right. Mom did good placing Adi here. These are intricate looking but very easily accomplished. And here she made individual cakes. An upside down apple delight and carrot cake. In the fridge are a bunch of mini cheese cakes with fruit or some sort of sauce and whipped cream embellishments.”
“I can’t wait to try some of these. I know how she bakes. It all looks incredible.”
“She is also planning on a warm dessert too if people wish they will need to pre-order as it will take time to soften. A poached pear in a spiced red wine.”
“Where does she come up with this stuff?”
“I don’t know but she is showing us how to make truffles now. We are going to have a three tiered truffle tower on each table at the beginning of dinner. One layer will have chocolate mint, another will have chocolate raspberry, and the third tower will be a milk chocolate filling with peanut butter shell. She made some for us to try before we dig in and start making the thousands that are needed.”
“Man, why didn’t I get kitchen duty! Are there any left to sample?” He asks his sister.
Leading him over to a table where there were a couple of truffles cut in half he picks up the peanut butter one first. “Wow. This is incredible.”
“I know, you wouldn’t believe how easy these are to make too. You just need to know the correct amount of ingredients to form the soft center or the hard shell.”
“Babe, I can’t believe all the work you have accomplished in just a short period of time.”
Smiling back at him, “Thanks, but it wasn’t me. These fine folks here in the kitchen are the pro’s. They worked wonders in such a short amount of time it was great. Had I known things would run so smoothly I might have added an additional choice or two for the guests to pick from. We got done ahead of schedule so we have time to make the truffles for the table.”
“Well, you certainly have stepped up the game for future events here as far as desserts go anyway, but I need to steal you away for an important matter that has come up. I don’t think you will be returning to the kitchen. Is everything set here for you to leave?” Cal asks.
Moira hearing what Cal said, “Go Adara, we got this. I’ll let mom know too about the special treat you were able to get in as well.”
“Thanks, Moira.” Adara replies while giving her sister-in-law a hug. “You’ve been a great help in here.”
Walking out of the kitchen, Cal leads Adara to his office.
“I have Beta Brent and Ginny meeting us in our office.” Cal tells Adara softly.
When everyone is settled, Adara asks, “Cal, what has you worried? Have you heard from Grant?”
“Not from Grant, the warriors I sent, they met up and did not find him but they found his car.”
Brent and Ginny cover their mouths in shock and Adara gasps, “Oh no what happened?”
“I’m not sure, all I know is the vehicle has been involved in an accident and Grant was not with the car. All of his luggage, ID, everything was still there. Xavier did tell me that there was a bullet hole in the passenger seat next to the driver seat as if someone tired to shoot him but missed.”
“This is not good. Have you told Samantha yet?”
“No, I haven’t.” Cal looks at Adi with pleading eyes. “I was hoping you would go with me. You know her, she may take comfort from you being there.”
“Of course, I’ll break it to her. I recommend a pack doctor come with us though. He may need to sedate her. I’ll also ask Sandy to come along. Sam and Sandy are good friends.”
“Brent, Ginny, I’ll need you to step into Grant’s and Sam’s shoes until they are able to return to attend to the village duties.” Cal addresses the Beta couple.
“Of course, Alpha. It would be our honor to assist in this matter. I just hope Grant is found quickly and unharmed.” Brent states and Ginny nods her agreement.
Once Sandy and the pack doctor are contacted to meet them at the Brownsville Mansion as they refer to the house now, Cal and Adara head to meet them. “You are amazing my love. You are already stepping into the Luna shoes with ease.” Cal praises.
“I don’t know about all of that. I’m simply being a friend to Sam.”
When all four of them made their way to the mansion kitchen, Cal fills in the Sandy and the doc, Adara jumps in, “Sandy, I’d like you and me to go and talk to Sam. Break it to her and then if needed Cal and you Doc can come in and sedate her.”
“You got it Muffin. You’re in charge with this.” Cal gives Adara a kiss on the forehead.
They walk inside and head to the bedroom that Sam is in.
Adara knocks softly on the bedroom door and calls out, “Sandy, are you awake?”
After a few moments the door opens, “Hey Adara, Yeah I’m awake.”
“Do you mind if Sandy and I come in and talk to you?” Adara asks.
“No, come in please. Have heard from Grant yet?” Sam asks.
“Let’s sit down by the fire.” Sandy leads Sam to the couch in bedroom sitting area.
Sandy and Adara each sit next to Sam and takes a hand. “Sam, We’ve heard from the warriors that Cal sent to search from Grant…” Adara begins.
Sam looks hopefully at Adara, “And?”
Taking a big sigh, “They found his SUV, it was involved in some kind of accident. When they searched the car they found his luggage along with his ID and everything appears to be untouched except, Grant wasn’t with the vehicle.” Adara says softly with an apologetic look.
“Was he taken to a hospital?” Sam asks.
“No. It looks like he was ambushed. They found a bullet hole in the passenger seat, like someone tried to shoot him but missed.” Adara fills in.
“No, oh no, no, no, no.” Sam cries.
Both Sandy and Adara hug their friend who starts to cry uncontrollably.
“I knew something was wrong when he didn’t show up. Grant, where are you Grant.” Sam wails.
“Shhh, It’ll be ok Sam. Alpha Caelan and Adara will make sure Grant is found. You can still feel you mate bond yes?”
Pausing in her crying, Sam nods her head. “OK, We don’t know what shape he is in but you know he is still alive. Hold onto that Sam.” Sandy encourages her friend.
“I’m not going go be able to rest until he’s back. I’m sorry Adara, I can’t go to the ball tonight. I will ruin your birthday party.”
“Sam, it’s OK. I understand. All I want is for you and Grant to be reunited. You are going to worry about him until you are. You will be miserable without your mate there. Stay here, sleep. If you are OK with it, I have a doctor waiting to give you something to help you sleep. I can tell that you haven’t rested this morning after I left you.” Adara notices.
“No, I didn’t sleep. I have been trying Grant’s phone on and off all morning. I will see the doctor, Adara.”
“Good, I will call him in for you when you are ready. Sandy? Can you help her get a quick shower and into pajamas. I will run down to the kitchen while you shower, make you something light, like scrambled eggs and toast with tea? Before the doctor helps you sleep?” Adara asks Sandy and Sam.
“Sounds good Adara.” Sandy replies for her and Sam.
“OK, I’ll be back quickly with some food for you then.” Adara says as she leaves the room.
Meeting Cal and the doctor in the kitchen, Adara fills them in on Sam.
“She’s not doing good. She can still feel her mate bond with him so that is something. I can’t imagine how worried she is. I am going to make her something light to eat since she hasn’t eaten today. Sandy is helping her shower now. When she is done she will allow you to give her the sedative doc. Please make sure it is strong enough for her to sleep through the night. We will see where things are at in the morning after we speak with Xavier.”
Cal and the doctor share a look and both nod at Adara.
While Adara is focused on getting Sam something to eat the doctor mumbles to Cal, “You are blessed with a wonderful mate, we are blessed with a wonderful Luna.”
