With the scent of my mate around me I fall into blackness and a restful sleep.
The harsh beeping of my alarm brings me to consciousness. Groaning I roll over and climb out of bed and head to the shower. Refreshed and ready for food, I grab a voucher and head to the Brownsville Diner situated across the street.
Stepping into the diner and looking around, it's what you would expect it to look like. A counter with swivel stools, booths and tables in the center. Just inside the door is the cash register next to a display of pastries. The blueberry muffins catch my attention. I sharpen my sense of smell and there it is. The winter snowfall with a touch of sugar cookie. I’m dazed. It’s faint, just lingering in the air.
I’m startled out of my trance, “Hey handsome, you want a booth, table or stool?” A cute blond with a bouncy ponytail asks.
I notice her name tag, “Uh, no thanks Sandy, I’ll just have three large black coffees with cream and sugar on the side and a half dozen of those delicious looking blueberry muffins.”
She flashes her smile, “Sure thing,” followed with an “Alpha” in a soft whisper only loud enough for me to hear.
I take my purchase back to my room and call Kade and Drake over for breakfast.
I divvy up the muffins and hand out the coffee.
“Oh wow,” Kade mumbles around a mouthful of muffin, “I don’t think I've ever had a muffin that tastes this good, mmmm.”
All Drake does is roll his eyes in delight and takes another monster bite. “We're in trouble if all their food is this good.”
I look at them and after they take a sip of coffee and swallow, I announce, “We have a change in plans.”
Both just stare at me with looks of utter disbelief. “Caelan, what's so important that you suddenly propose a change in plans?” Kade asked.
“Well, those muffins you are enjoying, I believe those were made by my mate.”
Stunned silence. A smile slowly spreads across Drake’s face. I can tell he's about to offer up congratulations.
I hastily add, “But she doesn’t know I exist, yet. I've been having dreams. Dreams of a cottage in the woods. I've glimpsed her from the back in these dreams. The thing is, I have never had a sensory dream where I could smell before. Last night, in my dream, she was making blueberry muffins. I could smell them. When I walked into the bakery and saw the muffins, I could smell her scent. I know what my mate will smell like from these dreams.”
“What. The. Fuck.” Is all Kade could whisper.
“So, Kade and Drake, I need you two to continue on with the trip. I'll handle the events here. Meet with the Alpha later today and merge this pack into Silver Wood.
“Here Drake, take the invitations to the ball. Kade, I trust you can handle the joining ceremony. DO NOT tell anyone about me finding my mate. I have something nagging at me that she could be in danger. Right now, I feel she's safest with the anonymity in this small town that's relatively unknown.”
I pause before continuing, “I’d like you guys to leave today. I'll pay for your rooms to keep them open in case they get an influx of tourists. Plus, I’d like the privacy with no one adjacent except for one of our own.”
I head to the registration desk to pay for our rooms for two weeks, better to be safe than lose our lodging. I cross the street and enter the Brownsville General Store to get a few necessities to keep me for a few days at least. Once in my room I make a call to Alpha Sanders to arrange a meeting for this afternoon and I head back to the diner for lunch.
Back at the diner I point to a stool and get the nod from Sandy. When she is done at the table she is serving she heads my way, “What can I get for you?” Again, adds “Alpha” in a soft voice.
“I’ll have a burger, fries, and a coffee Please…Oh and some information.”
She nods and steps away to put my order in and get my coffee.
“So Alpha, what kind of information are you looking for?” she asks.
“I'm looking to meet the blueberry muffin baker.”
“Why do you want to meet her, Alpha?” Adding quickly, “I mean no disrespect, sir.” When she sees the scowl on my face.
“It's really not your concern.” I reply.
Surprised with her answer, “Well, honestly it is sir. You see the young lady that does the baking here is like an adopted daughter to me. She means the world to me and my mate.”
“So, she knows you are wolves then?” I asked surprised.
“No, Alpha. She's unaware. When she first arrived here, she was very troubled and in need of not only stability but a feeling safety.”
Brows furrowed and wondering what sort of life she has lived so far, “Tell me what happened.”
“No, I can’t sir. It's a vow both my mate and I gave to Adara when she confided in us. She trusted no one. We worked very hard for her trust and we will not break it, except if her life is in danger.”
A soft sigh escapes me as I finally hear her name, Adara.
Eyes narrowed at me Sandy asks again, “What's your interest in her Alpha?”
“Sandy, if you can keep her confidence, I ask that you keep mine as well, as this puts us both in a precarious situation. I believe she's my mate.”
Sandy freezes after a sharp intake of breath. Slowly she asks, “How can you be so sure, have you ever met her? Looked into her eyes to know?”
“No, but I have my reasons why I believe so. There's a pack meeting in a day or two that Alpha Sanders and I need to set up. Make sure you and your mate…?”
“Tim, sir.”
“Tim are there. It has to do with the future of this town. I feel it'll be important to you.”
She leaves and returns with my meal and leaves me in peace. She checks on me once or twice to see how I'm doing. When I'm finished, over full really, the food is truly excellent for a diner, she approaches me again, “Now that you're finished would you like some dessert?”
“I couldn’t I'm over full as it is. Compliments to the cook.”
Sandy smiles, “I'll let Tim know you're pleased with the meal, but you should know, Adi does all of our baking here and once a week tends to our financial books. That girl is simply a blessing.”
“Well, in that case, how can I pass up a sweet treat? I'll have two slices of apple pie and two cups of coffee, but I'll need that to go as I've a meeting with Alpha Sanders in 10 minutes.”
“OK, let me get you to-go containers.” A few minutes later she brings back two styrofoam containers each with a generous slice of pie along with two large cups of coffee, “Dessert's on the house Alpha.”
After giving my thanks to Sandy, I walk out of the diner and to my room thinking that I'll like the people of this pack and I'm looking forward to having them in mine.
