Chapter 5: Into the Unknown

935 Words
Tawan followed Natee through the grand corridors of the mansion, his mind a whirlwind of confusion and questions. The elegant, almost opulent decor of the hallways contrasted sharply with the heavy thoughts clouding his mind. Every step felt as if he was walking deeper into a labyrinth, unsure of what awaited him at the end. Natee led him to a large set of double doors, each adorned with intricate carvings. The doors swung open without a sound, revealing a room filled with shelves of books, ancient scrolls, and artifacts that seemed to hum with history. It was like a private library, but it felt different—more like a museum or a collection of secrets. Tawan hesitated at the threshold, his eyes scanning the room. There was something about the atmosphere here that felt otherworldly, as if he was stepping into a place not meant for ordinary people. Natee entered the room first, and Tawan followed suit, his footsteps cautious as he took in the surroundings. The walls were lined with shelves filled with texts that looked old, some of them bound in leather that had clearly aged with time. At the far end of the room, a large desk sat, cluttered with papers and books, as if someone had been in the midst of deep study or research. “This is where the answers lie,” Natee said, his voice soft but filled with authority. “And this is where you’ll begin to understand the world you’ve found yourself in.” Tawan swallowed, trying to calm the racing of his heart. “And how am I supposed to understand it? You still haven’t told me anything.” Natee turned to face him, his expression unreadable. “Patience, Tawan. All in due time.” He walked to one of the shelves and pulled a thick, weathered book from its place, its pages yellowed and worn. The title was in a language Tawan didn’t recognize, but the cover had an almost mystical glow to it. Natee held it out to Tawan, who hesitated for a moment before taking it in his hands. “This is the beginning of your journey,” Natee said, his voice calm but filled with a strange intensity. “It will answer some of your questions, but not all. You must read, learn, and adapt. This world is not as simple as the one you left behind.” Tawan flipped through the pages, his brow furrowing as he tried to decipher the strange symbols and illustrations within. They were unlike anything he had ever seen. There were depictions of mystical creatures, ancient rituals, and powerful forces that seemed to control time itself. “Time?” Tawan echoed, glancing up from the book to meet Natee’s gaze. “What does this have to do with time? Is that why I’m here?” Natee nodded, his eyes gleaming with a knowledge that made Tawan feel small in comparison. “Yes. Time is the key to everything. It’s the force that connects all of us, shapes our fates, and guides us to where we need to be. You, Tawan, are part of a larger story—a story that involves time, fate, and choices that will affect not just you, but the very fabric of this world.” Tawan’s head spun. Time? Fate? He had trouble grasping the enormity of Natee’s words. Everything about this situation was too much, too overwhelming. He was just a regular guy from Bangkok—how could he possibly be part of something so monumental? “Why me?” Tawan asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “Why am I the one who’s here?” Natee’s gaze softened, and for the first time since they’d met, Tawan saw a flicker of something that wasn’t so cold—something almost... tender. But it was gone in an instant, replaced by the ever-present mystery in Natee’s eyes. “There is no simple answer to that,” Natee said. “But you are here because you have a role to play. A role that I, too, must help you understand. But first, you must accept the truth about this world.” Tawan shook his head, feeling a mixture of disbelief and frustration. “I don’t even understand half of what you’re saying.” “You will,” Natee assured him. “In time, you will. But first, you need to trust me.” Tawan clenched his fists at his sides. “Trust you? I’ve only known you for a day, and you want me to trust you?” Natee didn’t flinch at the anger in Tawan’s voice. Instead, he stepped closer, his presence commanding but not threatening. “You don’t have to trust me completely right now. But you will learn soon enough that I’m the only one who can help you. No one else in this world will have the answers you seek.” Tawan took a deep breath, his chest tightening. This was too much. Too much to take in, too much to understand. “You don’t have a choice, Tawan,” Natee said quietly. “You’re already part of this world. And in the end, we’ll both discover what happens next.” Tawan’s grip on the book tightened as he stood there, staring at Natee. He didn’t want to be here, didn’t want to be caught up in something he couldn’t understand. But the more Natee spoke, the more Tawan realized that he had already crossed a point of no return. Whether he liked it or not, he was in this world now. And there was no turning back.
