Nicole lay in bed long after the dinner with Brad had ended, her mind spinning with the conversation they’d had. His words echoed in her mind, almost like an insistent whisper, demanding her attention. "I would have kissed you if not for the invisible wall between us."
She could still feel the weight of his gaze on her, the way he had spoken the words so seriously, as if he truly understood the barrier she had erected around herself. But did he really? Could anyone, even Brad, ever understand why she kept her emotions locked away?
Her fingers toyed with the edge of the blanket as she stared at the ceiling, her thoughts tumbling over one another. That wall she had built, it wasn’t something she had decided to put up overnight. It had taken years, layers of protection piled on top of one another, each one a response to the hurts and losses of her life. First, her parents’ bitter fights, then her father’s untimely death, and later, the heartbreak of a love that had failed her when she needed it most. She thought back to her father, the way he had once been the center of her world, and how, after his death, everything seemed to unravel. Her mother, consumed by grief, became distant, and Nicole, in turn, grew more withdrawn.
But it was one person, more than any other, who had made her build the wall higher.
Her first real boyfriend, Adam. He had seemed different from the others, someone she could trust, someone who saw her as more than just a girl dealing with a difficult home life. For a brief time, everything had seemed perfect. The way he smiled at her, the way his hand fit perfectly with hers, it all felt so right. They had shared secrets, late-night talks, even plans for the future. He made her believe that love was something worth fighting for and it won't havet to end up like what her parents had.
Then, everything had shattered.
It had started small, missed texts, late replies, a few unreturned calls. Then, there was that one night. He had called, his voice unusually distant, telling her that things were just "too complicated" and that they needed some time apart. When she had pressed him for an explanation, he had been vague, offering no real answers. And then came the crushing blow, a few days later, she found out he had started dating someone else.
The betrayal had been sharp, unexpected, and devastating. She felt the sting of rejection deep in her chest, the same feeling of abandonment she had experienced when her father passed away. The pain was too familiar, too much to bear. She had vowed then to never let anyone get that close to her again. No one would have the power to hurt her like that again.
Nicole pulled her knees up to her chest, the memories flooding her thoughts. The wall she had built around herself had been an attempt to protect her heart, to keep the pain at bay. But now, with Brad, that wall felt more like a prison. He made her question everything, the walls, the distance, the control she had so carefully crafted.
Was it worth it? Was the safety she had so fiercely clung to really worth the emptiness she felt inside?
The next morning, Nicole found herself distracted at work. She sat at her desk, the usual hum of the office around her, but her mind was elsewhere, on Brad, on her walls, on the confusion that churned inside her. Her hands hovered over her keyboard, but the words wouldn’t come. She had a report to finish, emails to send, but her thoughts kept drifting back to last night.
She had no idea what to make of what Brad had said. He clearly wanted something more, but she wasn’t sure if she could give it to him. She hadn’t been able to give anything to anyone for so long.
The phone on her desk rang, and she jumped, startled by the interruption.
"Nicole?" Amelia’s voice came through, clear and warm. "You okay? You sound... off."
Nicole forced a smile, even though she knew Amelia couldn’t see it. "Yeah, I’m fine. Just tired, I guess."
"Tired?" Amelia teased. "You, tired? That’s a first. You’ve been working so much lately. You need to take it easy, girl."
Nicole sighed, her fingers tapping absently against the desk. "I just... had a lot on my mind."
There was a pause on the other end of the line before Amelia spoke again, quieter this time. "Is this about Brad?"
Nicole’s heart skipped. "Why would you think that?"
"Come on, Nicole," Amelia said with a soft laugh. "I know you too well. It’s pretty obvious that something’s going on between you two."
Nicole couldn’t help but smile, despite the turmoil inside her. Amelia had a way of making her feel seen, even when she didn’t want to be. "I don’t know, Ames. I’m just... confused. He said something last night, and it’s been on my mind ever since. About the walls. I don’t know if I’m ready to let them down."
"Ahh, the walls," Amelia muttered. "I get it. But you’ve got to admit, something’s changed, right? You’re not the same with him as you are with everyone else."
Nicole hesitated. Amelia was right. There was something about Brad that made her feel both drawn to him and terrified at the same time. She could feel the way he saw her, like she was more than just the girl who always kept a safe distance. He made her feel like there could be more. But was she ready to risk it?
"You’re right," Nicole said quietly. "I just don’t know if I can do it. Let him in, I mean. Let myself care about someone again."
Amelia was quiet for a moment. "You’ve been guarding your heart for so long, Nicole. I get why you’re scared. But maybe it’s time to take that wall down, piece by piece. Just don’t expect it to happen all at once."
Nicole closed her eyes, resting her head against the back of her chair. Piece by piece, was that even possible? How did you let someone in without feeling like you were handing them the key to your most vulnerable self?
"Thanks, Ames," she said softly. "I’ll think about it."
"You better," Amelia teased, her tone light. "Just don’t leave Brad hanging for too long, okay?"
Nicole chuckled, feeling a tiny weight lift off her shoulders. "I won’t. Talk soon."
At the office, Brad was struggling to concentrate. He had just sat down at his desk, the files in front of him blurring as his mind wandered back to Nicole. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he had said the wrong thing last night. The words had come out before he could stop them, and now, all he could do was replay them over and over in his mind. .
He cursed under his breath, rubbing his eyes. Why had he said that? It hadn’t been fair to her, putting that kind of pressure on her. He didn’t want to scare her off; he just wanted to know where they stood. But now, with the way she had pulled back, he couldn’t help but wonder if he had made a huge mistake.
"Brad?" Dylan’s voice broke through his thoughts. "You good?"
Brad looked up, meeting his best friend’s concerned gaze. Dylan had known him long enough to tell when something was wrong, and Brad wasn’t in the mood to pretend.
"I don't know what I've done, man," Brad admitted, dropping his head into his hands. "I said the wrong thing last night. I pushed her away again."
Dylan raised an eyebrow. "Nicole?"
Brad nodded, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "I don’t know what happened. We were having a great time, and then I just... I don’t know. I said that stuff about the wall, and now it feels like she’s shutting me out."
Dylan leaned back in his chair, arms crossed. "What have you done this time, huh?"
Brad paused, surprised by the question. "I don’t know how to get past this... whatever’s going on with her. She’s so guarded. I don’t know if I can break through."
"Man," Dylan said with a small grin. "I don’t think you need to break anything. But you do need to be patient. She’s been through a lot, right? You can’t expect her to let her guard down overnight."
Brad sighed. "I know. But it’s hard. Every time I get close, she pulls away."
Dylan clapped him on the back. "It’s gonna take time. Just don’t push too hard. You’re not gonna get through to her with more walls of your own. Let her come to you when she’s ready."
Brad stared at his friend for a moment, considering his words. Don’t push too hard, it was easier said than done, but Dylan was right. If he really cared about Nicole, he needed to let her open up at her own pace.
Nicole wasn’t sure when it happened, but she felt something change between her and Brad over the course of the day. When they finally crossed paths at work, it wasn’t as tense as she expected. There was still that invisible wall, but it felt different now, less suffocating. She wasn’t sure what had shifted, but there was a quiet understanding between them now, an acknowledgment of what was between them without the need for words.
It wasn’t easy, but for the first time in a long time, Nicole felt like maybe, just maybe, she could start tearing down the wall. Piece by piece.
