Chapter 4: The Interview

670 Words
Nicole’s heart skipped a beat. Her past wasn’t something she liked to share with strangers. She had worked hard to build a life for herself, but the memories of her childhood, of her father’s volatile temper, her mother’s silent suffering, still haunted her. She hesitated for a moment, unsure how much to reveal. But she could sense that Brad was watching her closely, waiting for an answer. “I… I grew up in Brooklyn,” Nicole began, her voice softer now. “It wasn’t easy. My parents... they fought a lot. My father was... difficult. He had his demons. It affected my mom, and it affected me.” She paused, taking a moment to collect herself before continuing. “But I don’t let that define me. I’ve learned how to survive. I’ve learned how to be strong on my own.” Brad didn’t say anything for a long moment, just looked at her with that piercing gaze. Nicole felt exposed, vulnerable in a way she hadn’t anticipated. She wasn’t used to opening up, especially to someone who hadn’t earned her trust. “I’m sorry about your father,” Brad said, his voice surprisingly gentle, though his expression remained unreadable. Nicole nodded, but she couldn’t quite bring herself to thank him. She wasn’t sure if he was just saying the right thing to get her to lower her guard or if he genuinely cared. In her experience, people didn’t often ask about the past unless they had an agenda. “So, what do you want, Nicole?” he asked after a beat, his tone shifting again to something more business-like. “What’s your goal here? You want a job, but what are you really after?” She blinked, caught off guard by his directness. “I... I want stability,” she said honestly, surprising herself. “I want to be able to take care of my mom and not have to worry about where our next meal is coming from. I want to build something for myself, something I can be proud of.” Brad studied her for a long moment, and the silence between them seemed to stretch endlessly. Nicole could feel her nerves returning, but she refused to let them show. This was the chance she had been waiting for. She couldn’t afford to back down now. Finally, Brad spoke again, his voice smooth and calculating. “I’ll be honest with you, Nicole. The competition for this position is fierce. I don’t know if you’re quite what we’re looking for.” He let the words hang in the air, and for a moment, Nicole felt the ground slip beneath her feet. “But,” he continued, his eyes never leaving hers, “there’s something about you. I’m willing to take a chance.” Nicole blinked, her heart racing. “You... you’re offering me the job?” Brad’s lips quirked into something that could almost be considered a smile. “Yes, I am. But be warned. This job will push you to your limits. You’ll be working under me, and I don’t take kindly to incompetence. If you can handle that, we might just have a deal.” Nicole’s breath caught in her throat. She had expected a polite rejection, not this. Brad Sinclair? arrogant, cold, and difficult to read, was offering her a chance to prove herself. She couldn’t let this opportunity slip away. “I’ll prove I can handle it,” she said, the words coming out with a confidence she didn’t quite feel. Brad gave a small nod, as if satisfied with her response. “Good. We’ll see what you’re made of, Nicole.” As Nicole left the office, her mind was spinning. The morning’s encounter with Brad felt like a distant memory now, replaced with a new challenge. But she knew deep down that this was just the beginning. Brad Sinclair may have given her the job, but their story was far from over. And she wasn’t sure if she was ready for what lay ahead.
