The Shadow

Gabriel couldn’t shake the feeling of her presence, and the following day, he found himself returning to the hotel where the gala had been held, ostensibly to meet a source about an ongoing case. But his mind kept drifting back to the woman in the red dress. It wasn’t just her beauty. It was the way she had moved through the room, the way she had looked at him—like she knew something he didn’t. Gabriel had dealt with enough cases of deceit and manipulation to recognize when someone was hiding something, and he sensed that Evelyn Blackwell, for that was her name, was hiding a great deal. He had asked around at the gala, but no one seemed to know her—at least, not by the name she had given. There were no social media profiles, no public records of her attendance at any events, and no mention of her in any business circles or charities. She had no apparent ties to the city’s elite, and yet she had moved through their world with the confidence of someone who belonged there. A few days later, Gabriel’s curiosity got the better of him, and he found himself at the address listed for her—an upscale but somewhat unremarkable apartment building in a quieter part of town. It felt like a long shot, but he had to know. The moment he entered the lobby, something about the air seemed off. The receptionist, an older woman with sharp eyes, was quick to warn him against asking too many questions about the tenants. When Gabriel pressed for more information, she grew more distant, her expression becoming unreadable. By the time he left the building, he was more confused than ever. Something about Evelyn Blackwell—her name, her presence—didn’t add up. That evening, Gabriel received an unexpected call from a source—a man he knew only as 'Avery'—who dealt in the city's underworld rumors. The call was brief, and Avery’s voice was tight with urgency. "I know you’re looking into her. Stay away, Matthews," Avery warned, his voice low. "She’s not who you think she is." Before Gabriel could ask for clarification, the line went dead.
