The continental road
The entire entourage had spent the previous night in total darkness away from the road and in a clearing not far from the road in accordance with Jon’s instructions. No one had made a fire and everyone had an early supper before the sun set. All that had been done to ensure that in the night there would be no need for a fire, no need for movement in their scanty camp and no need for any activity that would attract any unwanted attention. That particular section of the road was known as a favorite spot for bands of robbers that ambushed and took away whatever they could get. Jon had predicted everything and taken measures to avoid it all in his mind even before the journey began.
