28th September, 1340 The continental road The entire entourage had spent the previous night in total darkness away from the road and in a clearing not far from the road in accordance with Jon’s instructions. No one had made a fire and everyone had an early supper before the sun set. All that had been done to ensure that in the night there would be no need for a fire, no need for movement in their scanty camp and no need for any activity that would attract any unwanted attention.
