Chapter Five: The Truth It Showed Me

772 Words
The moment Amara spoke— “…Then show me everything.” —silence fell. Not the normal kind. Not the quiet of an empty street. This silence was deeper. Heavier. Like the world itself had paused. ⸻ Then— Darkness. ⸻ Amara gasped as everything around her disappeared. The path. The buildings. The sky. Gone. She was standing in nothing. Endless. Black. ⸻ Her breathing echoed around her. “Where am I?” she whispered. No answer. But she wasn’t alone. She could feel it. ⸻ Then— Light. ⸻ A sharp flash burst in front of her. And suddenly— She was no longer standing in darkness. She was watching. ⸻ A mansion. Large. Beautiful. Luxury beyond anything she had ever known. Her heart began to race. “…This place…” It felt familiar. Too familiar. ⸻ Voices echoed. Panicked. Urgent. “They’re getting closer!” “We don’t have time!” A woman appeared—elegant, terrified, holding a child tightly. Amara stepped forward. Her breath caught. The child— Was her. ⸻ Amara’s chest tightened. “That’s… me…” ⸻ The woman held the child close, tears streaming down her face. “You have to take her,” she said desperately. “If they find her, she won’t survive.” A man stood beside her, his expression tense. “They’ll come for the power,” he said. “They already know.” ⸻ Power. The word echoed. ⸻ The woman quickly removed a bracelet and placed it on the child’s wrist. Amara instinctively grabbed her own. “That’s it… that’s my bracelet…” ⸻ “It will protect her,” the woman whispered. “And hide her.” The man nodded, holding out a pendant. “And this… will find her when the time comes.” ⸻ Amara’s breath stopped. “The pendant…” ⸻ The woman kissed the child’s forehead. “Forgive me,” she whispered. ⸻ The scene shattered. ⸻ Amara stumbled as another vision took its place. Dark figures. Shadows moving through the house. Searching. Destroying. ⸻ “They’re here!” “Move!” ⸻ Fear surged through her. She could feel it. Not just see it. Feel it. ⸻ Then— Another shift. ⸻ Rain. A roadside. A small child crying. Alone. ⸻ Amara’s chest tightened painfully. “I remember…” Not clearly. But enough. ⸻ Footsteps approached. A woman. Aunty Sade. ⸻ Amara watched as her younger self was picked up, held, saved. Her breathing became uneven. “That’s how…” ⸻ The scene faded. ⸻ Darkness returned. ⸻ Amara stood still, shaking slightly. Her mind racing. Her heart pounding. “That was my life…” ⸻ Then— The voice returned. Clearer than ever. Stronger. Ancient. ⸻ You were never abandoned. Amara’s eyes lifted slowly. ⸻ “They hid me…” she whispered. ⸻ To protect you. ⸻ Her hands clenched. “From who?” ⸻ Silence. Then— A shift in the darkness. ⸻ Shapes began to form. Tall. Shadowed. Watching. ⸻ Amara’s breath caught. “Those… things…” ⸻ They are coming. ⸻ A chill ran through her entire body. ⸻ They never stopped looking. ⸻ Her heart began to pound harder. ⸻ And now… The voice paused. ⸻ They can feel you. ⸻ Amara’s eyes widened. ⸻ A sudden surge of energy rushed through her body. This time— It didn’t hurt. ⸻ It awakened. ⸻ Her bracelet flared with light. The pendant burned in her hand. The two forces merged. ⸻ Amara gasped as power flooded through her— Stronger than anything she had ever felt. Not overwhelming. Not chaotic. Controlled. ⸻ Her breathing slowed. Her fear faded. ⸻ Replaced by something else. ⸻ Clarity. ⸻ Her eyes opened slowly. Different now. Colder. Stronger. Certain. ⸻ “I was never weak…” she said quietly. ⸻ No. ⸻ Her grip tightened. ⸻ “I was hidden.” ⸻ Yes. ⸻ A slow breath escaped her lips. ⸻ “And now…” She lifted her head slightly. ⸻ “…I’m done hiding.” ⸻ The darkness shattered. ⸻ Amara was back on the path. The wind rushed past her. The world felt sharper. Clearer. ⸻ Alive. ⸻ She stood still for a moment. Then— A faint smile appeared on her lips. Not soft. Not shy. ⸻ Dangerous. ⸻ Back at school— Nothing had changed. ⸻ But this time— When Bisi laughed— Amara looked up. ⸻ And for the first time— She smiled back. ⸻ Not with fear. ⸻ But with purpose. ⸻ Because now— She knew who she was. ⸻ And what was coming.
