Chapter 2 - A Different Phase

"Jerry!” Thelma called in fury. "What the hell are you doing with her?” Another thunder rumbled in response. "I'm sorry, honey.” Jerry said sweetly. "Remember you were mean to her yesterday. I guess today's my turn." My stomach churned. “Won't you pick her too?" He flashed me a stiff grin. "No.” Before I could say anything further, it started raining heavily, and Jerry drove off. It was an unexpected heavy downpour. After a while, Jerry had to park his car by the corner of the road, and turned up the heater. "I wish you picked her too.” I mumbled sadly. He snorted. "I'm glad I didn't. She's so mean. You're not the only one I've seen her act mean to. She was also mean to a poor beggar the other day I stopped at the studio. She didn't know I saw her, though I pretended not to see.” I sighed, resigning myself to whatever fate that would await me at home. "I was asking if you guys were siblings the other day, because I thought you looked alike. Now, I'm not sure.” "We're stepsisters.” I said. “That’s enough reason for her to be good.” Whatever. Not like I cared. There was another rumble of thunder and the rain increased. It was past seven already. While we waited for the rain to subside, we spent the next hour chatting. "I'm not friends with her as you think. I only stopped by the studio because of my portfolio. I'm a rookie model, so I need impressive photos to boost my portfolio.” I was impressed. "Wow, that's very interesting.” "I've been to the studio thrice so far. Yesterday was my third time. She and her friends are always there and very chatty to anyone that stops by." He clicked his tongue. “Well, let's talk about something else. Tell me about yourself.” I shook my head. "No. Time to go. The rain has subsided.” He chortled as he revved the engine. "Bad news, Chrystie. The road leading to your house is flooded. I have to take a different route.” He reversed the car as he spoke. "Unfortunately, my car won't be able to make it the long way around. So you might just have to spend the night in my place.” My heart pounded hard. “Really? What if I take a cab or a bus?" He snorted. “Are they going to fly past the water? If you think I'm fooling you, you can check the news and see for yourself." What can I say? His apartment was a cozy, tiny studio apartment. I was nervous about being alone with him, but he didn't seem to care. I tried calling Julia to let her know I couldn't make it home, but she refused to pick my calls. Unfortunately, I lacked the courage to call Thelma. There was no point anyway. Everyone ought to know and understand what tonight was like. Afterall, first thing tomorrow morning, I will be home. “Make yourself comfortable." He said, offering me a thick blanket to wrap myself with, and a steaming cup of latte. felt drowsy the moment I drank it. Like I was knocked off. I guess I was too tired from having a long hard day. When I finally awoke the following morning, it was with a strange feeling. I raised the duvet only to see that I had slept naked. I screamed in shock. Jerry emerged from the bathroom with a satisfied smirk. "You were sweeter than I imagined. Soo… sweet." I couldn't believe this guy had just disvirgined me. "How could you, Jerry?! How could you do this to me? Thelma is a thousand times better than you are if this is what you're like!" “It's past seven. Shouldn't you be on your way home yet?" “You are so evil… you'll never succeed in your unfortunate career!" I cried, breaking down in tears. He chuckled. “We shall see about that." He threw my clothes at me, the ones I had worn to work, which he had dry-cleaned. "Please get dressed and leave. Pretend you haven't done it before.” "Not everyone is a dog like you, fool!” I fired. That morning, as I walked home, I felt like my world has crumbled. A lot of thoughts roamed through my mind. What if he had an infection and had just passed it to me? What if he had recorded a video of what he did to me? Why did he pretend to be so nice and all, if this was what he had in mind? I hit the doorbell severally when I got home, but no one answered, and I shivered outside in the cold. After about ten minutes, I tried again. But this time Julia opened the door herself and threw my trunk at me. "Get out! I don't ever want to see you here! You can go back to wherever you're coming from!” I sat at the door crying, till an elderly woman passed by in her car and made her driver stop. "What are you doing out here in the cold?” I could barely respond and just kept on crying. She had pity on me and took me home. "Here, have this herbal tea to soothe your lungs.” She handed me a steaming hot mug. I stared at it twice this time as I remembered my experience the previous night. "Would you prefer adding some milk?” she asked. I nodded sheepishly. I decided to empty the content without worrying. There was no way this kind woman would want to harm me, and if ever she had evil intentions against me, I might as well perish and join my mother in her grave. I just wondered what Julia would do when my dad returns. He was currently in Germany for a major construction work, and we could barely communicate with each other because of the time difference and his thick work schedule. What pained me most about his job was the fact that Julia kept every dime he sent to her for her and her daughter, and only gave me less than five percent of it, saying she was the one looking after me, and I didn't need much. I tried to inform my dad to send mine to my account instead, but he was adamant, telling me I was just being ungrateful and didn't understand what he was going through there, or the cost of making a foreign transfer. He totally didn't get my point. Poor me. I was abandoned to my fate. I obliged immediately to become a housekeeper to the old woman, Mrs. Hilmer, seeing she had none. I told her my story, but removed the part where Jerry had taken advantage of me. There was no point making myself lesser in her eyes with all my tales. I wasn't surprised Julia or Thelma never bothered about my whereabouts. Soon, three weeks went by, and I was very happy and comfortable with Mrs. Hilmer, till the day she had a visiting guest. Her grandson.
