Chapter 4 - Heartbroken

1061 Words
I felt very crestfallen at her final judgement that I had to place my hand on the wall as I suddenly felt drowsy. I managed to make my way back to my room, wishing this was all a bad dream. No. Mrs. Hilmer was too kind to send me off this way. In the morning, I would explain things to her and plead with her. I would also find a means of aborting the baby. I cried myself to sleep that night, with dreams of my mother. She had passed on when I was fifteen. And four years later, my dad married Julia. Sometimes, it felt like she died yesterday. The following day, I decided to make my appeal to Mrs. Hilmer. Afterall, it was her grandson who had done this to me. I bet she wouldn't want to kick her great grandchild away, just like that. She was at her favorite spot in the living room, sipping a cup of her herbal tea, and watching the news on TV. She was not so old. In her late sixties, she was still strong, though she had a lot of graying hair. “I was actually drugged. The guy took advantage of me without my consent.” I began, hoping she would listen. "You never mentioned that to me. If it was true, you would have mentioned it from the onset.” "I'm sorry I didn't. I just…I just wanted to put it all behind me.” She snickered. "Perfect. Now it is all before you. Please leave before I call the security. You have a family, I think it's best you return to them. Should you by chance have complications from abortion or childbirth, I would be held responsible. I suffered enough in my young age. Don't bring another calamity on me, please." “But…it was actually your grandson who did this to me.” I mumbled. She choked on her tea immediately and started coughing. I grew scared and confused. David who had just stepped out of his room, rushed to her immediately and soothed her till she was alright. Then he glared up at me. "Are you insane?! How dare you say something so daft and stupid? Are you trying to set me up when all I've tried to do is play nice to you?!” He was so mad. "Not you, please. Not you. I was referring to your twin brother, Jerry.” "Shut up!” He stamped his feet in fury. "You asked me this last night, and I thought it was a joke. Didn't I tell you I don't have a twin?” “Please, leave." Mrs. Hilmer said. “If you doubt me, you can come with me, and I would show you where he lives." “Don't be stupid. Almost everyone has a doppelganger. And that's what he could be. Please, get out." David snapped. I swear, believe me just this once, please." I pleaded desperately on my knees. "You need to see this guy.” Unfortunately, all my pleadings fell on deaf ears, and I was kicked out. I didn't know what to do. But I decided I was going to get a pregnancy test first and confirm. I bought it and entered a public restroom to check. It came out positive. I remained there for the next thirty minutes crying, till someone knocked impatiently at the door, and I was forced to exit the place. Not knowing where else to go, since I was short on money, I returned home to my stepmother. I was surprised she didn't chase me away or say a word. I was more surprised when she played nice to me, and that was when I grew scared. Julia wouldn't play nice for nothing. Well, my fears came to pass that evening when Thelma returned. She was beaming from ear to ear, and was excited to see me. "Wow, look who is here! Where have you been?" She pulled me into a tight hug. “You look very good." She ran her eyes over me. “Your cheeks have filled in and you look refreshed. That's good." She patted my cheeks fondly with a chuckle. That was when I noticed the ring on her finger. “You are…you're getting married?” I stuttered. "Oh, yeah. Your dad will be home in two days. The wedding is next week. So let's say your return is a perfect timing, because as my sister, I would need your help and support." “Really?” “It's unbelievable, right?" She laughed, walking away. I was in a daze for the rest of the day. Thelma was just a year older than I was. Why was she suddenly getting married? She had often boasted to her friends that she would not settle for any guy till she had all the fun she wanted, and maybe get married before she hits forty. So why the rush now? Two days later, my dad returned as they had said. I was very happy to see him. He looked more refreshed than I imagined. I just wished he wouldn't leave, but stay with us. Life was better with him. But he said he was on a two-year contract with the company. However, that night, I overheard my dad and Julia in a heated argument. I pressed my ear against the door to eavesdrop. You can't give her out to that guy in marriage, all because she's pregnant for him!" My dad said. “He can afford to take care of her! He is an upcoming celebrity for your information. He will soon be famous, and you don't expect my daughter to suffer with a baby alone, do you?" What? I stepped back in shock. Thelma was rushing into the marriage because she was pregnant? I heard footsteps and hurried to my room immediately. My dad emerged from the room, his voice thundering across the hallway. I put my ear to the door to listen. “I know you're sounding bitter about this because it's not Chrystie we're talking about." Julia said. “Of course, Chrystie knows better than to put herself in a mess like this." My dad retorted. “She can never get herself pregnant. I trust her." Oh no, dad. I am now. I felt so heartbroken as I slid down to the floor, crying.
