“Oh don't send her away, I would love to meet her again.”
“What about her do you like, you’ve only seen her once?” Kwan questioned.
“And I have saw enough, she does not look greedy like that Emiliy and she is very pretty.” Kwans grandmother responded.
“Its “seen” grandma.” Luclea said.
Kwan's grandmother never truly liked Emiliy, no matter how much Emiliy tried to sway her opinion with nice gifts and sweet words. Since the two of them were brought together as children, Kwan's grandmother always felt that Emiliy could not be trusted especially after all the trouble she had caused for him.
“On a different note, where would you like to eat halmeoni? Name any place and we will take you there no matter how expensive.” Lucela asked, hoping to change the subject.
“Bulgogi!” She said with a smile on her face.
“Yay.” Kwan said sarcastically as he nodded his head to the driver looking in the rearview mirror waiting for the go ahead. The car went silent, Kwan and Lucela both knew that there was only one place their grandmother would want Bulgogi from every time they visited Korea. This particular place was in the wet slums outside of Seoul and smelt of spoiled fish and burnt smoke which would stick to you and your clothes even after leaving. Both Kwan and Lucela were wearing handmade designer suits that cost well over two hundred thousand dollars a piece they both knew once they stepped foot in that restaurant their suits would be as good as trash.
“Lucela please figure this out.” Kwan said as he leaned his head up against the window, filled with sorrow.
“I’ll have someone bring us something.” Lucela said, filled with the same amount of sorrow as he knew he would be soon losing one of his nicest suits to the smell of dead fish.
“What do you need bring to you?” Kwans grandmother asked not knowing what sadness she had just placed into their hearts.
“Its “brought” grandma and it was nothing.” Luclea said as he too leaned his head against his window in defeat, neither of them could tell their grandmother “no”.
“Dolzhen li ya zakryt' restoran do nashego priyezda?” Should I have the restaurant closed before we arrive? Lucela said in Russian, trying to figure out if they needed extra security for their outing.
“Net, my s toboy mozhem reshit' lyubyye problemy segodnya.” No you and I can take care of any issues today. Kwan responded back in Russian. Both Kwan and Lucela could speak Russian so when their grandmother is around Russian is their go to language so she could not hear their serious conversations.
“Oh my grandsons are so smart, you know so many languages, I’m so proud of you both.” She said as she hooked both of them by their arms arm pulled them closer to her.
No matter how hard life became for the both of them there was a feeling of warmth they always felt when their grandmother hugged them. Everyday they both experienced betrayal and death, it was comforting for them to know that there was at least one person in this world who didn’t want them dead or want their money, she just wanted their happiness.
“I really do like that girl, she was very pretty and her eyes were gentle.” Kwans grandmother said as she began to hum a Korean lullaby.
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Kwan responded.
