Grunting slightly, I jerked my head around and fluttering my eyelashes rapidly, I allowed the dazzling white light to overwhelm me.
I have to know: "Where am I?"
A familiar girl's sobbing voice came from beside me as she grabbed my shoulders and said,
"Princess, You are awake! You had me worried."
Livia, my personal maid, was sitting beside my hospital bed when I turned around; her eyes were puffy from crying. "how are you feeling!? Should I call the doctor?" she asked in a panic.
Although my muscles were stiff from my long nap, I assured Livia that I was fine, whimpering.
When I woke up, I asked, "How long was I asleep?"
As the tears continued to fall from her eyes, she exclaimed, "One whole day, Princess! you had me worried. What had happened? Why are you this injured!?"
I laughed at her concern and said, "I'll recover in no time Livia, but didn't I warn you not to call me princess here? No one in this village knows about my identity, and we are not to reveal that until our mission is complete."
She sniffed through her tears and said, "Yes I-I am sorwwy," before asking the princess, "How did you end up like this!?" and "Why is there a silver chain around your ankle?"
As I wiggled my ankle, I felt the chill of metal; silver chains prevented me from assuming my werewolf form. Furthermore, I was told that I was a prime suspect in whatever had happened in the woods the day before.
I recently moved to Stonewalls, a small village on the outskirts of our kingdom Adalopha, and became a member of the pack here while pretending to be an omega. Before I could even properly introduce myself to the rest of the pack, I found myself in an embarrassing predicament.
As I shut my eyes, I was taken back to that first freezing night...
The moon was high in the sky, and the howls of the wolves that were running alongside me grew increasingly louder as we sped through the woods at top speed. We could see the Alpha was in
trouble, I howled throwing out a cry which was replied by a faint whimpering howl that came from a distance; it was apparent the wolf who howled was seriously injured.
Picking up my speed I sprinted to the front line where the beta was running, making sure not to get ahead of him, since that would mean breaking the law that regulates every werewolf pack. The Beta was a rather vintage person when it came to his beliefs and ideals, he was lot older than the alpha and quite rigorous when it comes to rules.
As a human, he looked annoying with those antique glasses that would drop of his face from time to time, and always sported a sleek haircut battering about principles. But as a wolf! he was pure grey, tall, and a genuine feast for the eyes.
As we approached closer to the call a sudden excruciating cry was heard, "The alpha!" I telecommunicated to everyone, "let's run fast he must be under attack!"
The beta stared at me bitterly and growled, "stay in your lane rookie! no one asked for a newbie's deduction skills" he looked at me threateningly, setting an example as a caution for others to not get ahead of him!
No one could go faster than him anyways, it was in every omega's blood to never defy the superiors. But the fact that he wasn't increasing his speed was a concern to me. 'Was he trying to let the alpha die!?' I thought to myself.
I was bewildered for a while and he abruptly took a right turn. That was not where the voice came from! We heard the cry again, the need for aid was so frantic this time.
'I'll face the law afterwards!I doubled back, took a left, and headed off in the direction of the noise.
All of the wolves yelled at me, "What are you doing, rookie? Come back here, follow the beta!" but I didn't pay them any mind because someone was hurt and probably dying.
I took off running in the direction of the call, the bloody aroma mixing with the familiar aroma of our Alpha. I was so desperate that I sprinted into the woods without paying attention to the wet ground, and I ended up in no man's land.
Before long, the Alpha had reverted to his human form, was bleeding heavily, and was rapidly losing consciousness. He was battling for his life in an area littered with the dead bodies of other wolves, evidence of a ferocious conflict that had occurred here.
Telecommunicating, "Alpha stay with me!" I attempted to take him up and carry him on my back. It was extremely difficult for me to ignore a plea for assistance, even if I were a disguised princess.
The pain shot up my leg and I whimpered as I turned around to see our Beta standing there, his eyes blazing with wrath and his teeth stained red with my blood.
I radioed to the group, "I'm sorry, Beta, but our Alpha is dying! Let us take him back first, and then you can punish me as you see fit by the law, and I promise to take it without complaint."
He went close to me, hissing as I knelt warily, "Rookie, go back now! The Alpha is dead." He stood at full height, terrifying me with his glare. "Shut up!" he scoffed. "You ruined my plan! Who asked you to put your own brain to the matter?"
I protested, "But he is breathing!"
He's dead, Beta said, so "get out of here" before you cause any more trouble in this strange nation.
The question is why he would make such a statement. I could see the Alpha taking breaths, struggling for his life, and pleading for assistance. Why does the beta keep harping on the fact that he's dead?
That's when I finally got it!
He had always planned to eliminate the Alpha. Previous decisions have led to his current plan to abandon him to his fate.
After I stood up, I stared him down and said, "So you want to take this opportunity and become the Alpha of our pack! Leaving the alpha here to die, You are breaking a major law that you yourself hold so highly to. You have nothing but death waiting for you when we go back."
I took a protective stance in front of the Alpha and yelled, "I will save the alpha! And you will face the law!"
In response, the Beta chuckled and said, "Yes, I intend to make the most of this opportunity, and since you seem to have stumbled upon it, I'll tell you the truth: I planned this all! I lay this trap for him because I want him gone for good! In the coming days, when I become the Alpha, I will erase all the new laws this asshole introduced in the pack.
He was never meant to be an Alpha; I was intended to be the One. But the purity of this young person's blood surpassed mine. Simply put, I'm reclaiming what was rightfully mine all along!A mocking tone came from the beta's lips as he said, "Tell me newling, now that you know the truth, who are you going to tell this all to? Is it more likely that people would believe your word than mine?
What I intend to do, I shall now reveal! When we return, I'll tell everyone that YOU killed the alpha, and that you're working with the enemy community. I want to see you try to defend yourself against that.
He was right, of course; I only joined the pack the day before, and no one would believe me if I reported this. But right now, the life of our Alpha was more important than anything else, and I was prepared to fight the Beta to the death to protect him.
As he came towards me, the beta said, "This is what happens when the old laws are compromised, dirty blood like you taint the pack!" And then start a revolution!"
He leaped to scratch me with his paws, but I avoided the attack and pushed him away from where the Alpha was before he could get into position for another one.
Now that I know you won't listen, I suppose I'll have to end your life as well.", the angry beta shouted as he sprinted towards me.
As we fell, he jumped on top of me and sat on my back while I struggled to get him off.
He bared his teeth and sank them into my neck, causing me to wince in pain as I tried to get free. He clamped down on me, preventing me from moving, and a pool of blood formed at my feet.
I trembled with agony and the prospect of dying.
Is this really the end for me?
No, I cannot fail in my mission to save the Alpha.
I saw the Alpha laying on the ground, covered in his own blood, but I could do nothing to help him since the Beta had me pinned down and was tightening his grasp with his canines.
The beta declared predatorily, "I will kill you first, and then I will enjoy watching the Alpha struggle through his final breath, finally leave this world!" When I get back to the hamlet tomorrow,
I shall officially replace the current Alpha of Stonewalls. And I will see to it that no scumbag is let into our gang.
Since I didn't say I was from the castle, he must have assumed I came from poor folks on the outskirts of the realm, and his statements were meant as a taunt.
Even though I had plenty of opportunities to practise in the castle, Beta had more real-world experience and was therefore more likely to survive any given situation.
With all the energy I still had left, I howled a distress signal unique to our pack; it was strictly forbidden to use it except in the most dire of circumstances, and our pack always made sure to investigate when someone sounded the alarm.
