Chapter 12

Rowan My heart froze in my chest. A throbbing entered my chest as I scanned Lisa’s face. I could see the regret written across her features. Still, she didn’t pull away, just rested comfortably in my lap. Nothing had ever felt more right. I knew what she was saying and why she was saying it. I knew this bond would cause both of us trouble, but after having her in my arms, the scent of vanilla and cinnamon filling my nose and tugging at something deep inside of my soul, demanding I pull her closer, that I keep her near me and protect her forever. Her lips quivered and tugged harder at my heart. I pasted a small smile on my lips, feeling them tug up just at the corners enough to draw her attention to them. “Well, I never have been for following rules and regulations, or giving a single f**k about what anyone thinks, not the coven or council or packs. So we will see.” I answered, making Lisa let out a huff of frustration and roll her eyes, but still she didn’t move from her spot in my lap. She actually burrowed a little closer, her head resting on my chest, when I felt the first tear drip from her eye and glide down my still bare chest. I tangled my fingers in her hair, massaging her scalp lightly. “Hey, everything will be okay. They won’t know anything, okay? It might be fun anyways, sneaking around. I bet we can find a lot of very unique places to have fun and be together.” I added, wiggling my eyebrows slightly, and this time I saw the smallest smile tug at her lips before her hand connected with my shoulder, a light smacking sound filling the air as it connected with my bare skin. I laughed lightly as Lisa lifted herself from my lap until she was standing. I rested my hand on the back of her calf, wishing greatly that I could just pull her back into my arms and we could stay here forever. When she stepped away, my hand slid from her leg and instantly a cold feeling settled over my skin, sinking through into my stomach. My body begged me to reach for her. Instead, I watched as she pulled the dress back over herself. I stood, walking closer to her. I watched as her eyes were drawn to me, unable to suppress the smirk that formed as I bent, picking my shirt up from the floor before sliding it back over my body. “I’m serious, Rowan. That can never happen again,” Lisa insisted, looking at me more now that clothes had returned to my body. I could see her building resolve. It settled into her eyes, but still, I only smiled. “We will see, Lisa. I know you feel it too and I know that you don’t really want to fight it either, but I will wait for you to come to me before I try anything again.” I promised. Lisa snorted. “Well, you will be waiting a long time then, like forever, because that is never happening again.” I laughed. “Like I said, we will see!” I added one last time as I made my way towards the door just as a knock sounded. I froze, holding a finger over my lips as I looked back towards Lisa. Her face drained of color, her mouth hanging slightly ajar and her heartbeat so loud I could hear it halfway across the room. “Lisa,” I heard Sydney’s worried voice whisper yell through the door, and a smile broke across my face as I took a few steps closer to the door. “DON’T you dare,” Lisa mouthed towards me. I winked quickly before I made my way to the door. I pulled it open just a crack. I watched panic form in Lisa’s eyes as she stepped closer to the wall, hiding herself completely from view of anyone who stepped closer to the slightly ajar door. “Hey, Syd,” I said as I looked up at her, but I was not prepared for the fury in her eyes as she took in my disheveled hair and flushed face. I watched in a mix of horror and shock as Sydney shoved her hand into my chest hard, making me stumble backwards, and the door opened just a bit farther, but not for long as Sydney stormed in, slamming the door behind her. I took another step back, wind picking up in the room even indoors with no windows open, and I knew it wasn’t my own powers so it had to be hers. “Sydney, what is your problem?” I asked, my voice growing just a notch louder as my eyes darted to Lisa very quickly before I moved them back to Sydney. I didn’t really want to give Lisa away, but I also worried if Syd was about to have a meltdown that Lisa could be seriously injured. I fought my instincts that were begging me to rush towards her, shield her. “What is my problem?” Sydney sneered. “My problem is that for the last few hours myself and the rest of the people have been searching endlessly for your mate and my best f*****g friend, who has been missing since directly after the meeting this morning. She ran out of there like her ass was on fire and completely disappeared, but you didn’t know that, did you? She is struggling with this mate s**t. Lisa is a wonderful person and deserves an easy love after everything she has been through, but clearly you don’t care because you have been in here f*****g some…” Lisa took a slow step out of the corner she was hiding in. I could see resolve building in her eyes. I tried to signal with my eyes that she didn’t have to give herself away, that I could handle Sydney, but it was too late. Her mouth opened. “Me,” she said, finishing Sydney’s sentence and making Sydney whip around quickly.
