CHAPTER 10 — THE SHADOWS THAT LOVE BUILT

1272 Words
--- The Emperor’s Silence Before the Storm Dawn rose gray over Jinlong Palace, the kind of colorless morning that swallowed warmth. Emperor Xuande stood before the towering jade windows of the throne hall, hands clasped behind his back. Ministers knelt trembling on the polished stone floor, afraid to breathe too loudly. The Emperor did not blink. His face was ashen marble. The news had arrived before sunrise: “General Rui Shen failed. Yanfei defied the Empire publicly. A crowd witnessed everything. She escaped.” No one dared repeat it. No one dared look directly at him. The Emperor finally spoke, voice barely more than a whisper. “Bring General Rui Shen to me.” It wasn’t a command. It was a death sentence spoken politely. --- Rui Shen: The Man Unraveling Rui Shen knelt before the throne, armor stripped, hair unbound, wrists trembling. He looked nothing like the empire’s perfect weapon. The Emperor descended the steps slowly, each footfall echoing in the vast hall like a countdown. “You let her defy me,” the Emperor said quietly. The softness made it worse. Rui Shen bowed deeply. “I accept full punishment, Your Majesty.” The Emperor circled him. “You told me you’d bring her to her knees. Instead, she stands taller than ever.” Silence. “You told me you had control over her.” Rui Shen’s jaw clenched. “I was mistaken.” “You told me,” the Emperor whispered into his ear, “that she feared you.” Rui Shen’s breath shook. “She did.” “But now?” Pause. “Now she defies even you.” Rui Shen’s body stiffened like a snapped wire. Something inside him—something carefully chained for years—began to break. The Emperor returned to the throne. “You are relieved of your command.” Gasps echoed through the hall. Stripped. Shamed. Humiliated. Rui Shen bowed lower instead of pleading. His voice was hollow. “As Your Majesty commands.” “And Rui Shen…” He stopped. The Emperor’s eyes glinted. “Next time you face her, bring me her body.” Not alive. Not whole. Not forgiven. Dead. Rui Shen left the palace with numb feet, numb hands, numb breath—yet his heart felt like it was burning alive. As he mounted his horse quietly in the side courtyard, soldiers whispered. “He lost everything over a woman.” “He’s not even shouting.” “That’s worse.” Rui Shen rode out alone without speaking to anyone. Not to his lieutenants. Not to the Emperor. Not to himself. He didn’t need orders anymore. He knew where she would run. And he knew she wouldn’t expect him—not the Empire, not the rebels—just him. --- Yanfei Doesn’t Feel the Footsteps Behind Her Yet Yanfei walked through the narrow forest trail with Lian Zhen, the mist dampening her sleeves. Their breath formed small clouds. The rebel camp was still a half-day away. Lian Zhen kept glancing over at her. “You haven’t spoken since last night.” Yanfei didn’t answer. Because even in freedom… even while running… even while next to someone who risked everything for her… A shadow clung to her mind. A pair of silver eyes. A voice that once promised to protect her forever. A hand that held her tightly—and then betrayed her. Rui Shen. No matter how far she ran, his memory was a stain that followed her. “Yanfei,” Lian Zhen murmured, stopping to face her. “Whatever happened between you two… he’s not your future.” Yanfei’s throat tightened. “I know,” she whispered. But then why did her heart tremble every time she imagined Rui Shen’s face when she defied him in front of hundreds? Why did she feel guilt buried beneath her hatred? Why did it feel like something between them was unfinished? Yanfei shook the thoughts away. She didn’t know that at that very moment, Rui Shen knelt in the mud of the forest behind them, pressing two fingers against a faint bootprint. Her bootprint. He closed his eyes and exhaled shakily. “So you’re really running from me…” His voice cracked halfway between a whisper and a laugh. --- The Hunt Begins Rui Shen followed the silent path through the trees, moving like a shadow born of pain. No soldiers. No flags. No authority. Just obsession. Just guilt. Just love twisted into something unrecognizable. The forest seemed to bend around him—leaves brushing his shoulders like old memories. He remembered when Yanfei used to walk ahead of him on forest paths, pretending not to be tired even when she was. “You’re stubborn,” he used to say. She’d stick out her tongue. “And you talk too much,” she’d reply. He inhaled deeply. The forest smelled like her perfume—delicate and floral, drifting through the morning dew. His grip tightened on the sword. “She thinks she can run from me…” His breath grew uneven. He wasn’t angry. He wasn’t calm. He wasn’t rational. He was a storm with no sky to contain him. --- The Emperor’s Orders Spread Like Wildfire Back in the capital, the Emperor’s decree was announced: YANFEI OF THE SILVER ARCHIVE IS SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR HIGH TREASON. Banners were hung. Rewards posted. Hunters prepared. Assassins sharpened blades. Every faction in the Empire now wanted her head. But Rui Shen didn’t care. He didn’t want the reward. He didn’t want recognition. He didn’t even want redemption. He wanted her. To catch her. To confront her. To ask why she looked at him with so much hurt— and refused to see his pain. --- Rui Shen Gets Too Close Yanfei and Lian Zhen stopped to rest by a stream. Yanfei cupped water into her palms, watching the ripples distort her reflection. She looked tired. Different. Haunted. Lian Zhen knelt beside her. “You’re safe with me. I promise.” Yanfei wanted to believe that. But her heart suddenly tightened. The forest went silent. No birds. No breeze. No rustling. Just the sound of a presence she knew too well. A presence carved into her bones. She turned slowly. Her breath froze. There was no one on the trail. Yet she felt it. Rui Shen had entered the forest. And if danger had a heartbeat… it would sound exactly like his. --- The Unstable Heart of a Hunter Rui Shen watched them from a cliff edge above, eyes fixed on Yanfei. He didn’t blink. He didn’t breathe. He didn’t move. She was right there. Within reach. Within one arrow. Within one leap. But he wasn’t ready. Not emotionally. Not mentally. Not spiritually. He wanted to see her face clearly. He wanted her to look at him without hatred. He wanted to ask— “Why did you choose him? Why not me? Why did you run from the only man who loved you enough to burn the world?” His hand trembled on the rock. He couldn’t control his emotions anymore. He couldn’t control anything. --- The Chapter Ends With a Breath Before the Collision Yanfei stood, heart pounding harder and harder. Lian Zhen stepped in front of her protectively. “What’s wrong?” he whispered. Yanfei swallowed. Her eyes scanned the trees. “He’s here.” “Who?” She didn’t answer. Because she heard it. A single breath. A familiar one. A breath that once whispered her name like a prayer— —now sounding like a threat. Rui Shen exhaled slowly from the shadows. And Yanfei’s blood ran cold.
