Elora's dance ended, and she stepped off the stage, exhausted but relieved. Jack handed her a towel and a glass of water, his eyes lingering on her body."Great job tonight, Elora," Jack said, his voice dripping with insincerity. "You're a natural."Elora forced a smile, knowing she had to keep him happy. "Thanks, Jack", just then, Phillip approached them, his eyes locked on Elora. "Marcus wants to meet you," he said, his tone firm.Elora's heart sank. She knew who Marcus was – a powerful man with a reputation for getting what he wanted, no matter the cost.Phillip led her to Marcus's table, where he sat, sipping his wine, his eyes never leaving hers."Elora, join me," Marcus said, his voice commanding.Elora hesitated, but Phillip's firm grip on her arm forced her to sit. Marcus's gaze roamed over her face, his expression unreadable. "I must say, you're even more stunning up close."Elora's skin crawled, but she played along, smiling and laughing at his jokes. As the night wore on, Elora felt trapped, unable to escape Marcus's grasp. He ordered champagne, and they toasted to her beauty.Phillip excused himself, leaving Elora alone with Marcus."Tell me, Elora," Marcus whispered, his breath hot against her ear, "what drives a beautiful woman like you to work in a place like this?"Elora's heart pounded. She knew she had to tread carefully."I do it for my family," she replied, trying to sound convincing.Marcus's eyes narrowed. "I can help you, Elora. I can give you a life beyond your wildest dreams."Elora's instincts screamed warning, but Marcus's grip on her hand tightened."You don't have a choice," he whispered, his eyes glinting with possession. "You're mine now." Elora's eyes flashed with defiance, but she knew better than to provoke Marcus. She politely extricated her hand from his grasp."Thank you for the offer, Marcus, but I'm happy with my life," she lied, trying to sound convincing.Marcus's face darkened, his eyes narrowing. "You're making a mistake, Elora. I can give you everything you've ever wanted."Elora stood, her heart racing. "I appreciate the sentiment, but I need to go. It's been a long night."Marcus's jaw clenched, but he nodded curtly. "Phillip, escort Elora out."Phillip appeared, his expression neutral. "Let's go, Elora."Elora collected her tips from Jack, who leered at her. "You're making a big mistake, Elora. Marcus doesn't take rejection well."Elora ignored him, hurrying out of the club.As she walked home, the cool night air cleared her head. She quickened her pace, anxious to escape the night's events. Reaching her small apartment, Elora found her mother, Maria, sitting on the couch, watching TV."Where have you been?" Maria snapped, her eyes critical.Elora sighed, exhaustion washing over her. "Work, Mom. I told you, I'm working double shifts."Maria's expression turned icy. "You're wasting your life, Elora. You should find a decent man to take care of you."Elora bit back a retort, knowing it would only lead to more arguments. Just then, the door creaked open, and Benjamin, Elora's father, stumbled in, reeking of alcohol."Hey, kiddo!" he slurred, staggering towards Elora.Maria stood, her voice venomous. "Look at you, Benjamin! You're useless! You can't even provide for your family!"Elora's heart ached as she watched her parents' toxic dynamic unfold."Dad, sit down," Elora said gently, helping him to the couch.Benjamin's bloodshot eyes locked onto Elora's. "My apologies, kiddo...I'll do better...I promise..."Elora forced a smile, hiding her despair. Benjamin's apology only fueled Maria's anger. "Apologies won't pay the bills, Benjamin! Your drinking and gambling have ruined us!"Benjamin's face reddened, his voice slurring. "I'll pay, Maria...I promise...just give me another chance..." The argument escalated, with Maria hurling insults and Benjamin stumbling to defend himself. Elora's anxiety spiked, her heart racing. She couldn't take it anymore. Grabbing her phone, Elora retreated to her room and dialed Laura's number."Hey, girl! What's up?" Laura answered on the first ring."I need a favor," Elora said, her voice shaking. "Can I sleep over tonight? Mom and Dad are...arguing again."Laura's tone turned sympathetic. "Of course, Elo! Come over. Matthew's not home, so you can have his room."Elora's tension eased slightly. "Thanks, Laura. I'll be there soon."After grabbing her overnight bag, Elora slipped out of the apartment, leaving the toxic argument behind. As she walked to Laura's place, the cool night air cleared her head. She felt guilty abandoning Bernice, but she needed a break. At Laura's apartment, Elora found solace in the peaceful atmosphere. Laura greeted her with a warm hug."Hey, girl, you're safe now," Laura whispered.Elora's eyes welled up with tears. "I don't know how much more I can take, Laura..."Laura led Elora to Matthew's room.
