Suddenly, I heard some shuffling noise outside the cottage and Kaden’s scent filling my nostrils soon followed. My eyes immediately narrowed as I mentally prepared myself, lying on the bed stiffly.
‘What the hell is this asshole doing here!’
The loud sound of banging on the door made me wince in annoyance. This damn jerk. Us, wolves have high sense of hearing, and his continuous banging on the door is making my eardrums hurt.
I lied still on the bed, I have no choice but to wait and see what’s this asshole’s playing at right now. He usually barged inside here without prior notice, but now seems to be a different case.
“Rora, my beautiful baby girl. Open the door…”
My skin crawled in disgust upon hearing his slurred speech. The asshole Alpha is drunk. I’ve already noticed the faint smell of alcohol even he’s still outside. I grew even more annoyed. He was disturbing my rest, I pursed my lips into a thin line, not intending to open the door for him.
I would rather be injected with silver than to open the door for him like a mistress waiting for her lover. And that lover was the Alpha who just finished his mating ceremony with his true mate.
Kaden’s definitely a bastard.
“My love… are you not in there?” He continued with his slurred voice.
I rolled my eyes, not wanting to deal with him at the moment. All I wanted was to rest and get as far away as possible from him. I thought that I could get a peaceful sleep tonight but the jerk has totally ruined it.
Just as I guessed, Kaden finally kicked the door open minutes after he didn’t hear me reply. He’s an impatient jerk after all. I snorted when I heard his footsteps nearing me.
Time for another war.
“You’re here…” I lied still on the bed even though I can feel his disgusting presence only a few feet away from me. “Why didn’t you respond… a while ago…”
“I was sleeping.” I replied with my monotonous voice.
“No…” He slowly moved towards my bed making me clench my fists. “I think you were waiting for me, sprawled seductively on this bed.”
I can feel his stare digging into my skin which caused nothing but disgust to my system. I snapped my gaze towards him, sending him a hard glare. But the damn Alpha only smiled sadistically in return. He took another step towards my bed, stumbling on his feet.
Luckily, my reflexes was fast avoiding him on time. If I haven’t pulled my body up, for sure his body would fall on top of me.
I sneered after hearing the breaking of his nose as soon as he fell straight down on the wooden bed.
‘Serves him right.’
“f**k,” The asshole let out a groan.
A small smirk formed on my lips as I crossed my arms, staring at him. “Oh my goodness, Alpha. You should be careful.”
The feigned concern in my tone was filled with mockery. Kaden let out a hiss before pulling his body up while clutching his broken nose.
When our eyes met, I saw how his eyes hardened for a moment. I knew he was displeased with my disrespect. In fact, all Alphas craved for submission among their subjects. They are proud and dominant, it was in their nature. However, nothing can stop me from acting this way in front of Kaden. I loathe him.
“I’m deeply touched by your concern, my beloved mistress.”
“My dear Alpha, I am not informed that you already proclaimed me as your mistress.” I gritted my teeth, trying hard to stay calm at the moment.
The Goddess knows how I badly want to strangle this asshole to death. But I am also aware that I am no match for him, even with his drunken stupor.
“Since the first time you willingly came into my arms, you were already my mistress, Rora.”
I cringed, feeling my blood boil as I pursed my lips tight and clenched my fists to my sides. Indeed, I was too naïve that time, but I didn’t willingly come into his arms as he claimed it to be. I had no choice. The anxiety of becoming a rogue clouded my mind.
“What are you doing here?” I harshly respond.
Kaden chuckled, causing my annoyance to increase. “Can’t I get to see my gorgeous baby girl? I miss you so I wanted to see you.”
“You’re really shameless. Your mating ceremony has only ended.” I glared at him before turning on my back. “Don’t you have any ounce of respect for your mate?”
“You know…” Kaden trailed off, taking a few steps towards my direction. I held my breath still, preparing my fist to attack him once he near me.
“I can’t smell your sweet scent today. What did you do?”
“Nothing that concerns you.” I hid my smirk, Kaden doesn’t know my ability to conceal my scent.
“Rora, don’t make me mad. Your rude replies are pissing me off.” He warned, seething his teeth.
“I’m just answering your questions,” I shrugged my shoulders. “And stop calling me Rora.”
Kaden forcefully grabbed my wrist, pulling me towards his side as I noticed how his eyes flicker from green to black.
“I’m warning you,” His voice shifted low and I knew that his wolf was on the surface. “Do not disrespect me, your Alpha.”
I bowed my head showing my neck at him in submission. After all, I am still a member of his pack and he was still my Alpha. However, his warning doesn’t really affect me at all. I don’t have an inner wolf. Alpha orders only work on people who have inner wolves.
But acting submissive would save me from further trouble. “I’m sorry, Alpha.”
“That’s my good girl.” Kaden hummed in approval, making me roll my eyes.
The way he put a claim on me makes me want to puke. I was not his!
“Alpha, sorry to interrupt you. But we should get going now. The luna must be waiting for you.”
My ears perked up hearing the man’s familiar voice outside the cottage. His voices sent me a feeling of nostalgia.
It has been a while…
“f**k Andrew! What a good timing.” Kaden cursed, throwing a glare towards the door.
“I apologize.” Andrew replied.
My eyes darted towards the door. The corner of my eyes stung for a moment after confirming that it was indeed Andrew, my older brother.
Kaden’s grip tightened on my wrist, “I’ll come back tomorrow.”
“As you pleased.” I hope you won’t come back.
Kaden let go of my wrist before finally walking out of the cottage. I glanced at the slightly opened door before my body stiffened as my eyes met with Andrew’s.
There was a trace of concern on his look, but I was the one who immediately broke our stare, turning my back against him.
My brother who abandoned me six months ago looking at me in concern? My eyes must be mistaken.
As Kaden’s presence soon left the area, I furrowed my brows when I felt Andrew’s presence still outside.
“Why aren’t you leaving?” I spoke, sitting on the bed while clutching my wrist.
“Rora, can I talk with you for a minute?”
I shut my eyes. That nickname again. Snapping my head towards his direction, I shot a uninterested look to Andrew. “I want to sleep. Please leave.”
Andrew looks like he still wanted to say something. But when he noticed my eyes void of any emotion, I saw him flinch for a moment before nodding his head in defeat.
I slumped my body on the bed, closing my eyes. “Don’t forget to close the door.”
When the door was finally shut, I pried my eyes open again. The shabby ceiling entered my sight as I sighed before bringing my hand to clutch my chest.
It still hurts.
Meeting my brother again after six months was a huge surprise. And my heart still clenched at the sight of him.
Perhaps, it was because of longing and sadness. Or maybe the feeling of betrayal. Nonetheless, I don’t want anything to do with him anymore. He was the person who denied me as his sister in front of the whole pack.
I shut my eyes tight, lulling myself to sleep. But after almost an hour without being able to, I pulled my body up.
I need to go on a run.
Stripping my clothes off, I walked out from the cottage before finally shifting to my wolf form.
One thing I love about my wolf form was my thick white fur. When I first shifted, I was so happy to see my beautiful wolf form. White wolves are rare. A wolf having a white fur are considered as precious pack healers. There are only a little amount of healers all over the world and I thought I was to become one of them discovering that I was also a white wolf.
However, my expectations crumbled down when I discovered that I was a verrin – an abomination. The whole pack witnessed and also realized my real identity. The night of my coming-of-age ceremony turned to a huge chaos. The people who loved me left me and the whole pack hated me with disdain.
My inner wolf, whom I hoping would help me with the amount of anxiety and depression I was carrying was nowhere to be found. When I first shifted, there was nothing but emptiness in my head. I waited but eventually lose hope.
No, I didn’t lose hope. Perhaps, I just got tired of waiting for someone to come to my aid. I can always feel something missing inside me, but after the amount of abuse and torture Kaden inflicted to me, I became hopeless.
Pushing my paws to run fast but silent at the same time, I heightened my senses upon nearing the pack borders.
Kaden has placed a hundred of patrol guards here. It was an exaggerated amount. His reason for putting such many patrol guards was for preparedness incase a rogue attack happens.
But I knew better.
The real reason was because of me. Kaden knew that I am no match for a hundred of warriors, which makes escaping impossible for me. He was that sick to appoint hundred of guards just to keep away a frail lady like me to escape.
It was why he never caged me inside that cottage. He gave me the privilege to wander just around the pack lands, because he knew I can’t step a foot outside the border. Moreover, he was also aware that I wouldn’t dare to make appearance in front of the whole pack anymore.
He was cunning, but I grew even more cunning than him.
Last month, I discovered that I can conceal my scent which was a big advantage for me. I can easily escape, but I didn’t act rashly because I have nowhere to go once I escape from this pack. That’s why it took me a month of planning before I finally decided to escape tomorrow night.
My destination? Well, I decided to go to the city where humans inhabit. It wasn’t the ideal place for me, but I think it’s more safer than the forest.
I pushed my paws, as I continued running. The pack border was only a few meters away from me and I don’t sense any presence of patrol guards around the parameter.
This made things for easier for me. As I finally passed and stepped my paw outside the pack border, I let out a wolfish grin.
Damn. I succeeded easier than I thought.
I continued pushing my paws to run faster. My destination was the pond 3 kilometers away from here. I have been there once, last week.
When the sight of the pond finally came to my view, I slowed my running pace before making my way towards the shore. My paws touched the cold water before I lowered my snout towards the water before drinking.
The water somewhat refreshed my system. But the odd thing is, I was feeling hot all over my body. Maybe it was because of the long run so I decided to take bath on the pond.
However, before I could even jump my wolf form on the pond, I suddenly heard a twig snap not far away from me.
I immediately snapped my head towards the sound’s direction. My vigilance high. But my heart suddenly pounded loudly on my chest when a strong intoxicating scent wafted on my nostrils.
It was a mixture of pine and wood, and it was enough to stir different kind of emotions on me.
And when my eyes met a pair of red orbs of a black wolf, a few meters away from me. My breath hitched and I stiffened.
The first word that entered my mind sent me to a realization.
Mate.
