The Golden Cage

The Golden Cage The grand hall of Vittorio’s villa felt as cold and silent as a tomb. The crystal chandeliers overhead cast long, sharp shadows across the marble floor, reflecting the catastrophic betrayal that had just shattered Elena’s world. Don Carmine’s voice—announcing her forced marriage to Ethan Vance in forty-eight hours—still echoed in her ears like a death sentence. Elena couldn't move. She couldn't breathe. Every nerve in her body burned with a mixture of suffocating shock and pure, unadulterated humiliation. Beside her, Julian let out a faint, quiet breath of relief, the tension draining from his pale face as he realized his life had been saved. He didn't look at his sister. He didn't care that her freedom had just been sacrificed on the altar of his cowardice. To him, and to her father, she was simply a transaction—a piece of fine silk traded to settle a debt of blood. Across the room, Ethan Vance stood unmoving. His glowing amber eyes were fixed entirely on Elena. The subtle smirk that usually danced on his handsome lips was completely gone, replaced by a dark, dangerous intensity. He saw the color drain from her olive skin, saw the raw, devastating agonizing pain in her dark almond eyes. For a split second, a flicker of something unreadable—something dangerously fierce and possessive—flashed deep within his gaze. "A toast!" Elder Vittorio called out, raising his crystal glass to break the heavy silence, though his voice sounded weary. "To peace between the Rossi Syndicate and the Pack!" Glasses clinked. Murmurs of agreement rippled through the gathered mafia bosses and pack elders. Elena didn't wait for the toast. She turned on her heel, her royal blue silk dress sweeping across the marble floor as she walked swiftly toward the secluded garden balcony overlooking the winter sea. She needed air. She needed to feel the icy wind on her burning skin before she tore the room apart with her bare hands. The midnight wind off the coast was bitter, whipping her dark golden waves around her face as she rested her trembling hands on the cold stone balustrade. Tears of rage and betrayal brimmed in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. "You did this," Elena whispered into the darkness, her voice shaking with raw emotion. "I didn't force your father's hand, Elena." Ethan’s low, baritone voice purred from the shadows behind her. Elena spun around, her heart leaping into her throat as he stepped out onto the moonlit balcony. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket, wearing only his crisp black shirt with the top buttons undone, revealing a glimpse of the dark tattoos running up his throat and the faint outline of the bandage beneath. "Don't lie to me!" Elena spat, her dark eyes flashing with lethal hatred as she stepped directly into his space. "You backed him into a corner! You knew he was too weak, too cowardly to let Julian die, so you demanded the one thing you knew would destroy me!" Ethan didn't retreat. He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until the heat radiating from his broad chest wrapped around her cold frame like an invisible flame. The scent of rain, dark cedar, and tobacco rolled off him, suffocating her senses. "I gave him a choice, little princess," Ethan murmured, his voice dropping into a dangerous, velvet purr that made her skin prickle. "He could have given me your brother's head on a silver platter. He could have chosen to stand and fight like a true Don. But he handed you to me without a single hesitation. Your father sold you to protect a rat." "And you bought me!" Elena choked out, her breath catching as his hand slowly rose. Ethan’s long, warm fingers brushed against her jawline, his thumb gently catching a stray lock of hair whipping across her cheek. His touch was devastatingly soft, contrasting violently with the ruthless aura surrounding him. A shiver ran down Elena’s spine—a treacherous, electric heat that made her pulse race out of control. "I didn't buy you, Elena," Ethan whispered, his golden eyes burning into hers with a possessive, dark hunger that made the air feel thick. "A transaction implies you can be owned. But a woman like you... wild, lethal, and beautiful... cannot be owned. You can only be conquered." "I will kill you before I ever walk down an aisle for you," she hissed, forcing herself to hold his intense gaze despite the chaotic storm raging in her chest. "I will put a blade through your heart while you sleep." Ethan’s lips curved into a slow, wicked smile—a dangerous, breathtaking expression that set her blood on fire. He leaned down until his lips almost brushed the shell of her ear, his hot breath sending a violent tremor through her entire body. "Then you had better make sure your blade goes deep enough this time, my sweet princess," he breathed softly, "because if I survive... I won't be so gentle with you." Before she could push him away, the heavy oak doors of the balcony swung open. Don Carmine stepped out, his gold cane clicking against the stone floor, followed by four armed Rossi guards. His face was a cold, unyielding mask. "Ethan," Carmine said flatly. "It is late. My daughter needs to prepare for her departure." Ethan slowly straightened up, his eyes never leaving Elena’s face as he stepped back, giving her space. "Take her back to your estate, Don Carmine. But remember... my guards will be surrounding your gates tonight. If she vanishes again, the deal is off, and Julian dies." The ride back to the Rossi estate was suffocatingly quiet. Elena sat in the backseat of the black SUV, staring out the rain-slicked window at the passing city lights. Carmine sat beside her, staring straight ahead, completely silent. Julian rode in the front passenger seat, nervously checking his phone every few minutes. When the heavy iron gates of the estate closed behind them, Elena finally broke her silence. "How could you?" she asked, her voice dangerously calm as they stepped into the grand foyer of the mansion. Carmine stopped near the sweeping staircase, turning his gray, lifeless eyes toward her. "I did what was necessary for the survival of this family, Elena." "You traded me!" Elena yelled, her voice echoing through the massive empty hall. "You traded your own daughter to a monster who almost bled to death by my own hand yesterday! You sacrificed me for him?!" She slammed a furious hand toward Julian, who flinched behind his father. "Julian is the future of the Rossi bloodline!" Carmine barked, his voice booming through the house. "You are a woman, Elena! Your duty has always been to forge alliances that strengthen this empire. You should be grateful I found a way to save this family without shedding any more of our blood!" "Grateful?" Elena let out a harsh, bitter laugh, tears finally brimming in her dark eyes. "I bled for this family while Julian cowered in shadows! I managed your business, I protected your reputation, and this is how you repay me? By handing me over in chains?!" "The wedding is in forty-eight hours," Carmine said coldly, turning his back on her as he began walking up the stairs. "Go to your room. The seamstresses will arrive at dawn to fit your gown. Do not make a scene, Elena. You will do your duty." Elena stood alone in the center of the dark foyer, her jaw clenching until her teeth ached. She looked at Julian, who gave her a half-hearted, awkward shrug before hurrying up the stairs after their father. Duty. The word tasted like ash in her mouth. She wiped her eyes fiercely, her heartbreak hardening into an icy, unbreakable rage. They thought they had trapped her. They thought she would quietly put on a white dress and march into Ethan Vance’s golden cage. They were wrong. At 2:00 AM, the Rossi estate was dead silent. Elena stood in her bedroom, having traded her blue silk dress for black tactical pants, leather boots, and a dark fitted jacket. She carefully slid two silver throwing knives into her boots and secured a suppressed sidearm inside her shoulder holster. She wasn't going to wait forty-eight hours to become Ethan's bride. She was going to slip through the estate's underground escape tunnel, leave the state, and disappear into the night forever. She stepped quietly toward her balcony doors, easing them open to check the perimeter. Down in the courtyard, three black SUVs belonging to Ethan’s Pack were parked near the gates, their armed enforcers patrolling the grounds. But Elena knew the blind spots of her childhood home better than anyone. She unlocked the hidden wooden panel behind her walk-in closet, stepping into the dark, narrow stone staircase that led deep beneath the mansion—the secret escape tunnel built during the mob wars of the 1980s. Elena clicked on a small tactical flashlight, her heart pounding against her ribs as she navigated the damp, underground passage. She walked for ten agonizing minutes until she reached the heavy iron grate that opened into an abandoned drainage alley three blocks away from the estate. Using a crowbar, she quietly pried open the rusted iron lock. The cold night air rushed into her lungs as she pushed the grate open and climbed out into the rain-slicked alleyway. "Freedom," she whispered to herself, taking a deep, shuddering breath. "You really thought it would be that easy, little princess?" Elena’s blood ran completely cold. She froze, her hand instantly flying toward her holster—but before her fingers could touch the grip of her gun, a heavy, iron-like arm wrapped firmly around her waist, pulling her back against a broad, solid chest. A warm, gloved hand clamped gently but firmly over her mouth, muffling her sharp gasp. Sitting on the bonnet of a black sleek sports car parked in the shadows of the alley was Ethan Vance. He tilted his head, his golden eyes glowing in the dark as a dangerous, intoxicating smirk spread across his face. And standing right behind her, holding her securely against him, was Ethan's top enforcer—a massive, scar-faced man who chuckled softly in her ear. "Your father built that escape tunnel thirty years ago, Elena," Ethan said smoothly, stepping off the car and walking toward her with slow, predatory grace. "Did you really think I wouldn't map out every rat hole in your estate before I demanded your hand?" Ethan reached out, his warm fingers lightly tracing her cheek before slipping under her chin to lift her face up toward his. "The wedding isn't in forty-eight hours anymore," Ethan whispered, his amber eyes burning with a dark, triumphant fire as he leaned close to her face. "You just moved the date up. You're coming home with me tonight... Wife."
