The Blood Bargain
The mahogany-paneled study of the Rossi estate smelled of expensive cigar smoke, aged bourbon, and the stifling weight of panic.
Don Carmine Rossi stood by the tall arched window, his back to his children. The rain outside beat a frantic rhythm against the glass.
"A fighting tournament?" Carmine’s deep, weathered voice cut through the silence. He turned slowly, his sharp gray eyes landing on Elena. "You are suggesting we settle a multi-million-dollar territorial dispute and a blood debt... over five rounds in the ring?"
"It’s the only language the Pack respects, Father," Elena said, her voice steady as she stood in the center of the Persian rug. She didn't flinch under her father's heavy gaze. "Ethan Vance isn't looking for a settlement cheque. He wants blood. If we offer a public underground tournament, the street laws will bind him. The Lycans value honor in the ring above all else."
"She’s insane!" Julian spat from the leather armchair, wincing as he clutched his bandaged ribs. "Father, Vance is a monster! You didn't see him in that pit. He broke a two-hundred-pound heavyweight in under a minute! It’s a trap."
Elena shot her brother a cold look. "It’s a delay, Julian. Something you failed to buy us with your reckless stupidity."
Carmine raised a single hand, instantly silencing Julian. He looked at his daughter, a faint flicker of pride—and deep calculation—glinting in his eyes.
"Ethan Vance is the Pack’s undisputed champion," Carmine mused, tapping his gold ring against the armrest. "Who do you propose we put against him?"
"Our five best enforcers," Elena answered smoothly. "And for the final match... we raise the stakes so high that even Ethan Vance cannot refuse without looking like a coward."
The night of the tournament, The Grand Arena—a neutral, abandoned cathedral transformed into an underground fighting ring—was packed to the brim.
On the eastern side sat the Rossi syndicate, clad in tailored black suits, silent and armed to the teeth. On the western side stood the Pack—raw, imposing, covered in tattoos, their wild laughter echoing off the stained-glass windows.
Elena sat in the front row of the Rossi box, wearing a crimson silk dress that stood out like a drop of blood against the dark wood. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her face remained a mask of flawless composure.
Across the wide stone floor, sitting on an elevated velvet throne with a glass of dark amber liquor in his hand, was Ethan.
He wasn't in fighting gear tonight. He wore a crisp, dark charcoal suit, open at the collar without a tie, revealing the faint edge of a dark tattoo crawling up his neck. His raven hair was brushed back, framing a face so striking and dangerous it felt like a trap.
When his glowing amber eyes found hers across the arena, he didn't glare. Instead, he lifted his glass toward her in a slow, elegant, mocking toast.
A subtle slant of his lips—a shadow of a smirk—sent a sudden, unbidden warmth straight to Elena's chest. Arrogant bastard.
The first four matches were a bloodbath.
The Rossi syndicate took two wins using raw speed and calculated tactical strikes. The Pack took two wins through sheer, terrifying strength. The air in the cathedral was suffocating, thick with sweat, iron, and tension.
"It’s a draw," the referee announced, his voice booming over the speakers. "The final round will decide the territory of the Northern Docks!"
Ethan set his glass down on the small table beside him with a quiet, deliberate click. He stood up, unbuttoning his suit jacket and handing it casually to the lieutenant beside him.
The crowd went wild.
"Ethan Vance steps into the ring for the final bout!" the announcer shouted.
Ethan rolled up his crisp white shirt sleeves, exposing forearms carved like granite and crisscrossed with faded white scars. He stepped into the iron cage, his movements fluid, calm, and utterly terrifying.
Then, his eyes locked onto the Rossi box.
"Don Carmine," Ethan’s smooth, deep baritone carried effortlessly across the silent room, laced with a dark, velvet charm. "Your enforcers put up a respectable fight. But for the final round... I hear the Rossi family prides itself on blood royalty."
Julian paled, taking a step back behind his father.
"Why hide behind hired guns?" Ethan continued, a dark, playful glint in his amber eyes as his gaze slowly shifted from Carmine to Julian... and finally rested on Elena. "Let the heir of the Rossi name step into the ring and defend his family’s honor."
"He's out of his mind!" Julian whispered, horror lacing his tone. "I'm not fighting him!"
Carmine’s jaw tightened, his knuckles white against his walking cane. Refusing now in front of every crime boss in the city would ruin the Rossi name forever.
Elena felt her breath hitch in her throat. She stood up, the crimson silk of her dress rustling softly in the silence. She walked to the edge of the VIP balcony, resting her hands on the iron railing, directly facing Ethan.
The distance between them felt paper-thin. She could smell the faint scent of rain and dark tobacco drifting from the ring, mixed with the intense heat of his presence.
"A fight requires equal stakes, Mr. Vance," Elena said, her voice clear, melodious, and sharp as a silver blade. It echoed through the high arches of the cathedral. "My brother is an heir to an empire, not a pit fighter. If he steps into that ring, what are you willing to put on the line?"
Ethan paused, resting his hands casually on the top bar of the cage, tilting his head as he looked up at her. A low, amused chuckle vibrated in his chest.
"Always the clever businesswoman, Miss Rossi," Ethan murmured, his voice dropping into a intimate, dangerous tone that felt like a stroke against her skin. "Name your price. My blood, my word, or my territory?"
"If Julian lasts three minutes in the ring with you," Elena challenged, her dark eyes locking onto his glowing ones without a single tremor of fear, "the Pack drops the blood debt entirely. Forever."
The arena gasped. Three minutes sounded small, but against Ethan Vance, three minutes was an eternity.
Ethan’s smile widened—sharp, beautiful, and utterly predatory. He leaned a little closer against the bars, his eyes burning into hers with a sudden, intense heat that made Elena’s pulse leap violently.
"Deal, little princess," Ethan whispered, his gaze lingering on her lips for a heartbeat too long before flicking back to her eyes. "But if he fails... you bring me my morning coffee yourself. No guards. No guns."
It was a ridiculous, playful, yet humiliating demand for a Mafia princess—a subtle, elegant tease that proved he wasn't afraid of her father's empire.
Elena’s cheeks flushed with a sudden, hot mix of annoyance and something dangerously close to excitement.
"Agreed," she said quietly.
Ethan stepped back from the bars, his dark expression instantly turning cold as he turned toward the entrance where Julian stood trembling.
"Time's ticking, Rossi," Ethan said, his voice dropping all playful tone, returning to pure, icy danger. "Let's see if your blood runs as thick as your sister's pride."
