Chapter 2 - The Rejected Mate

687 Words
The night was thick with tension, the Moonridge Pack gathered in ceremonial silence under the full moon's glow. Tonight was the Alpha Heir Selection—a sacred rite of passage, and every unmated she-wolf hoped to be claimed by the future Alpha, Rylan. Selene lingered at the edge of the gathering, heart thudding in her chest. Only hours earlier, her wolf had stirred for the first time—late, uncertain, but alive. She clung to that spark now, praying it meant something. Maybe, just maybe, the Moon Goddess had not forgotten her. Her fingers curled into the fabric of her simple gown, eyes nervously scanning the crowd. She felt exposed, a sheep among wolves. The pack had never welcomed her—not the way they did the others. Whispers always followed her like a cursed scent. "Why is she even here?" "She’s the weak one. Her wolf hasn’t even awakened, and she’s already eighteen." "Rylan would never choose someone like her." "She’s courageous, I’ll give her that…" Each word cut deeper than the last, but Selene refused to leave. She had every right to stand among them. The Moon Goddess paired mates for a reason. And deep inside, despite years of ridicule, she clung to one fragile hope—that tonight, fate would finally choose her. Rylan stepped forward, tall and magnetic, radiating confidence. His dark hair shimmered under the moonlight, his ice-blue eyes scanning the she-wolves lined before him. As heir to Moonridge, his decision would determine not only his Luna, but the shape of the pack’s future. The moment his gaze found hers, Selene felt it. The bond. Her breath hitched. Lightning coursed through her veins, her wolf stirring restlessly inside her. He is mine. Her heart pounded as Rylan’s lips curved—not in recognition, but in a sneer. He moved toward her, the entire pack shifting to watch. Hope swelled, trembling, fragile—until he stopped just short, gaze cold. “Selene,” his voice cut sharp as glass, “you are not strong enough to be my Luna. I reject you.” A gasp tore through the gathering. Selene staggered back, disbelief crashing through her. The bond burned, searing her chest with agony. Her wolf howled within her, clawing at her soul as if trying to hold onto something already slipping away. “Rylan, please—” “You’re weak, Selene. I won’t bind myself to someone who can’t even shift without struggle. You’re nothing more than a liability.” Tears blurred her eyes. Laughter bubbled around her, the mocking voices of those who had always despised her now emboldened. The rejection was complete. Rylan turned and walked away as though she had never mattered. Selene fell to her knees, the cold forest floor pressing against her skin, her soul burning. The bond frayed, yet clung stubbornly to her heart, every beat a lash. But as pain consumed her, something else stirred. Not just her wolf. No—something older, deeper, darker. An ember buried in silence, now glowing awake. The moon above seemed to pulse. The air thickened, charged. No one noticed. No one cared. The Elders congratulated Rylan for his “wise decision.” The ceremony went on, her agony invisible. Selene rose on trembling legs, eyes rimmed red but defiant. They wanted her broken. They would not have the satisfaction. Not tonight. She turned and walked into the woods, laughter fading behind her. Branches clawed at her gown, but she didn’t stop. She screamed. Raw. Wild. A sound ripped from the marrow of her being. And something answered. Power surged—ancient, untamed, crackling through her veins like thunder. Her wolf whimpered under its weight. Selene dropped to her knees again, gasping, transformed. She wasn’t broken. She was becoming. And the Moonridge Pack had no idea what they had just unleashed. The girl they mocked was gone. In her place rose something fierce, wild, and no longer bound by their scorn. Selene wiped her tears, resolve hardening in her golden gaze. She would return. Not as a forgotten outcast—but as a storm they would never see coming.
