Chapter 9: A Dance Before the Storm
The Blood Moon Festival was only two days away.
The Silver Crescent Pack was alive with excitement. Music echoed through the village square as warriors sparred, children laughed, and elders prepared for the sacred celebration.
To everyone else, it was a festival.
To Lyra, it felt like a farewell.
She walked quietly through the bustling streets, smiling politely whenever someone greeted her. The warmth of the silver pendant against her chest was the only thing that gave her comfort.
As she passed the training grounds, Kael was finishing a duel with Beta Rowan. With one powerful strike, he knocked Rowan to the ground.
The watching warriors erupted in cheers.
Kael accepted their praise without a smile.
His eyes drifted across the crowd until they landed on Lyra.
For a brief second, something softened in his gaze.
Then the poisonous whispers in his mind returned.
She's hiding something.
She can't be trusted.
His expression hardened, and he turned away without a word.
Lyra felt as though her heart had shattered all over again.
---
That evening, the pack gathered for the traditional Moonlight Dance, held before the Blood Moon Festival.
According to tradition, every mated pair shared a single dance beneath the full moon to honor the Moon Goddess.
When Elder Miriam announced, "Alpha Kael and his fated mate, Lyra Ashthorne," all eyes turned toward them.
Lyra hesitated.
Kael remained still.
After a long silence, he finally stepped forward and offered his hand.
She accepted it.
As the music began, they moved across the dance floor in perfect rhythm, as if their souls still remembered the bond their hearts had forgotten.
For one fleeting moment, Kael saw not suspicion...
...but the gentle girl who had stood beside him since childhood.
He remembered her patching his wounds after training.
He remembered her laughing beneath the Moon Oak.
He remembered promising, as children, that they would always protect each other.
His grip on her hand tightened.
"I'm sorry," he whispered so quietly that only she could hear.
Lyra looked up in surprise.
Before she could answer, a sharp pain shot through Kael's head.
Dark visions flooded his mind.
He saw Lyra standing beside the mysterious black wolf.
He saw her handing over maps of the pack.
He saw her smiling as Silver Crescent burned.
The visions felt terrifyingly real.
Kael released her hand as if she had burned him.
The music stopped.
The entire courtyard fell silent.
"What are you doing?" Lyra asked, confusion filling her voice.
Kael stepped backward.
"I can't..."
He turned and walked away, leaving Lyra standing alone in the center of the dance floor.
Whispers spread through the crowd.
"A mating dance... abandoned?"
"I've never seen anything like this."
Selene lowered her head to hide the triumphant smile on her lips.
Everything was unfolding exactly as planned.
---
Late that night, Lyra returned to the forest where she had first encountered the mysterious black wolf.
"I don't even know why I'm here," she whispered.
A cool breeze stirred the trees.
Then...
She felt it.
That same ancient presence.
The massive black wolf emerged silently from the shadows.
This time, he didn't remain at a distance.
He approached until only a few steps separated them.
His crimson eyes held neither fear nor judgment.
Only quiet understanding.
Without thinking, Lyra reached out.
The great wolf lowered his head.
Her trembling fingers brushed his soft black fur.
The moment she touched him, a brilliant silver light burst between them.
Visions flashed through Lyra's mind.
An ancient throne.
A kingdom beneath three moons.
A handsome man with crimson eyes placing a silver crown upon her head.
Then...
A single word echoed through her soul.
"Aurora."
Lyra gasped and stumbled backward.
The visions vanished.
The black wolf looked at her one last time before disappearing into the darkness.
She stood frozen, her heart racing.
"Aurora..."
Why did that name feel as though it belonged to her?
Hidden high above on a rocky cliff, the crimson-eyed king watched silently.
A faint smile crossed his lips.
"You remembered."
"It has begun."
Above them, the Blood Moon glowed brighter than ever.
Only two nights remained before fate would forever change the lives of Lyra, Kael, and the mysterious king who had waited a thousand years for his Queen.
