Chapter 7

1105 Words
Vivian. I was speechless at the realization. So she was the woman who had been poisoned on the job that got me fired. She looked different from the person I saw that day, but I guess I just don't remember her face clearly. I didn't try to kill her, I wanted to tell her. I had been framed, and I was innocent, but from looking at Elizabeth's face, I knew that no matter how much I tried to explain to her, she was not going to believe me, so it was best that I kept quiet and just accepted my fate. I followed her as fast as my swollen legs could carry me and when we got to the kitchen, she gestured to the counters and the sinks. "I want you to clean all these places and I want them sparkling clean" She looked me up and down as I tried to steady my breathing. "Oh stop acting like you ran a marathon. You literally just came down the stairs," She pointed back at the counter. "After you are done, you let me know. I'll be upstairs" and she turned around swiftly and walked away, leaving me standing in the middle of the kitchen alone looking at the work that she had given me to do. What was the work of the workers if I was told to do all these? Was Axel aware that she was making me do this? What about my condition and the baby? I really didn't need to be doing any strenuous work right now, especially because my body was literally on fire from all the dragging that she had done to me at the stairs. After all my complaints, I realized that it was not going to save me, and it was better that I got to work immediately so that I could just be done with it once and for all, but it was all just wishful thinking because immediately I was finishing with the sink, Elizabeth came into the kitchen as if she had sensed that I was done. She went to the counter and inspected it, and then she inspected the sink and finally gave a stiff nod of satisfaction. "Good job. Now that you're done with this, I wouldn't want to keep you on your feet for too long, especially because of your condition, because unlike you, I am not that wicked to want to kill you or your baby. So, you have two minutes to catch your breath before moving on to your next task which is going to be sweeping the whole compound". I gasped at what I had just heard her say. Sweep the whole compound? Why did it have to be me that would do it? Plus, the compound was as big as anyone that I had ever seen before, so how was I going to finish sweeping it in a day? "I'm sorry, but I am exhausted from all the kitchen work and I really need to rest, so please have pity on me and allow me to do the compound cleaning tomorrow. I promise you that I will not complain but instead, I'll do it happily" I clasped my hands, pleading with her, but she turned deaf ears to my plea. "You think you have a choice and that's so cute," She smiled and touched my cheek and all of a sudden the smile disappeared. "You have two minutes to rest, and your time starts now. So keep your eyes on the clock," she turned my head to the direction of the wall clock, then patted my shoulder "Don't worry, I'll get someone to get you everything that you might need in doing the job, okay?" I didn't respond, so she grabbed me roughly by the throat and repeated herself "Okay?" "Okay" I whimpered. "This should be the last time that I'll ask you a question, and you will not reply to me. Is that understood?" "Yes, it is," My voice was barely audible because she was choking me terribly and then all of a sudden, she let me go and walked away, leaving me coughing and trying to catch my breath. I was almost certain that if this should go on then I was going to end up dead soon. Looking at the wall clock, I realized that two minutes was almost over, so I walked to the nearest chair and sank into it in exhaustion. My whole body was on fire and there was no hope of it being over anytime soon. I was almost falling into a light slumber when I heard some noise and I opened my eyes to see one of the workers holding some working equipment. "I'll drop these outside for you ma'am," he said before walking out of the door and out into the compound. He must be the one that Elizabeth had sent to give me the things I needed for the compound job. "Your two minutes are up, so get your ass up and get to work," I heard her voice and I looked around, only to find her in one of the corridors upstairs, leaning towards the wooden rail. "I believe you already know that I expect nothing but a clean job. Take out all the unwanted grasses and prune the flowers too. I'm sure you're going to do a great job now. Get up and get to work." I finally got up after several trials and failures. My body was too weak to carry both me and my baby, but it was not as if I had a choice. The compound took me hours to clean. When I was finally done, it was very late in the night, and it felt as if I was going to collapse, but I had to find the strength to take myself inside and to my room and immediately my head hit my pillow, I went into a deep sleep. Everyday continued to go the same way with Elizabeth giving me outrageous work to do and I even discovered that she sent all the workers away, and I was the one doing all the work from the cooking to the cleaning and all through the suffering. I prayed silently in my mind that nothing had happened to my baby because then it would mean that I was going to be executed, because Axel had told me to my face that if anything happened to his child, then I should consider myself dead, and I wholeheartedly believed that he was going to kill me. That was if Elizabeth did not kill me first.
