I was almost a walking dead by the time Elizabeth finally let me stop doing all the strenuous work around the house that she could think of and that was because Axel finally came back from wherever it was that he had traveled to.
The day he came back, I had been in the kitchen cooking lunch for Elizabeth, and he had exploded once he saw me stirring the meat stock.
"What do you think you're doing here?" He shouted and I froze on the spot.
"I'm making lunch" I answered, not liking the way he was looking at me.
"What do you mean you're making lunch? Where are the workers?" He yelled, and I was quiet because I genuinely didn't have an answer to his question.
"Why are you quiet? I said, where are the workers?" He took a step closer to me and I countered it by taking a step back and just when I thought that he was going to do something as drastic as hitting me, Elizabeth's voice came through the door.
"Axel, you're back" she coed, her voice softer than I had ever heard it. "I didn't think you'd get here so early. Come on, you need to freshen up" She put her hand on his chest and completely acted like I was not in the same room with them but Axel wasn't having it. Instead he pushed her hand away and pointed to me
"What is she doing in the kitchen, Elizabeth?" He asked her with a suspicious latched voice and she, first of all, looked at him in shock at how he had pushed her hands away from him before she rolled her eyes.
"She's cooking or can't you see that?" She replied to him and I could literally see the smoke coming out of his head as his anger increased.
"I can see that, and why is she cooking in her condition? Where are the maids?" He asked, looking from her to me and I put my eyes down out of fear so that I would not have any eye contact with him.
"I sent them out on a mini vacation. That's where they went to but you don't have to worry, they'll be coming back soon."
Axel stood still for a long time, leaving both Elizabeth and I in anticipation of what he was going to do next, but after what seemed like hours, he finally sighed and just walked out of the kitchen and I heaved a sigh of relief at the sense of safety that befell me, but Elizabeth spoke and reminded me that it was just a faux, and I was far from being safe as long as two of us were in this house
"You get back to cooking and make sure that it is ready soon so that Axel can have his lunch" her voice dripped in venom before she walked out, leaving me alone in the kitchen.
I quickly finished up the cooking and served it, happy that I was almost done, and the workers would be back soon, just like she said.
That was the last time that I worked in the house, but I still felt the impact of all the work I had done on my body. I noticed that I had started to get fatigued way more easily than when I did before and my whole body just aches continuously without ceasing.
Soon it was time for my usual checkup now that Axel was back because all through his time away, the doctor had not come to check up on me. He came into my room and, as usual, muttered something that was inaudible that I always assumed was a greeting. Then he immediately went to the process of checking on me and the baby. I laid down quietly, feeling completely exhausted, and I noticed that something was wrong immediately when I saw his usual neutral expression change into something that screamed that there was a problem and, for the first time since we started the ceremony of him checking up on me, I spoke to him.
"Is everything alright doctor?" I asked him, watching in fear as his sour expression continued to grow even more sour, but he didn't say anything to me, instead he frantically took out a notepad and a pen and started scribbling something that I could obviously not see.
"Doctor, is something the matter? Is there a problem with the baby? Please talk to me," I pleaded with him, but he remained mute until he finished up and swiftly packed up his equipment and then picked up his bag and basically ran out of the room, leaving me in utter confusion as to what was happening. Was my baby okay? Was I the one who was not well because I definitely didn't feel well, but I was left with a lot of questions and no single answer and all I could do was pray that whatever the issue was, was with me and not the baby, because if anything happened to the baby then it was as good as me being dead?
All through I was losing my mind, I placed my hands on my stomach wishing that I could just maybe get a vision as to what the doctor must have seen, and I was still thinking when my room door burst open and Axel barged in with the doctor following him meekly behind. I was expecting him to drag me from the bed and maybe do something to him because of the anger that was written all over his face, but they never even made it to my bed. They only stood in the corner and the doctor was whispering to him, rapidly, and I tried to strain my ear to hear what he was saying to him, but I could hardly make out what he was saying, and soon the whispering stopped and Axel turned to look at me one last time.
As our eyes met, I knew that something was gravely wrong, but I could not understand why nobody was saying anything to me.
"You stay here and don't leave this room under any circumstances," his voice screamed in anger, and suddenly his eye contact ended, and he stormed out of the room. Leaving me to wonder what on earth could have happened? Was the baby and I in danger?
