Ellie's POV
I walked upstairs to my father in-law's study room where he called for me. I had gone back to my room after breakfast, when he sent the maid to call me. She led me into the study room.
I noticed how big it was. I moved slowly to the side, as I touched most of the books.
I've never seen a study room this big and spacious. My father's own was nothing compared to this one.
The bookshelves were neatly arranged. He didn't have to. I noticed the books were arranged accordingly. This is huge and lovely.
“Ellie” Mr Spark called, as he walked behind me to the place where his table and chairs were. That was a different room itself.
Yes! They're billionaires, but they do have a very good taste. I'd give them that and still commend them.
I walked with him and he directed me to a chair to sit as he sat on his chair opposite mine with a table across.
The chair felt too straight. The table between us was too wide. I folded my hands on my lap and sat like someone waiting to be evaluated.
This looks more like an interview and not a situation of trying to communicate with your Father in-law.
I wanted to see him concerning my career. My studies. I want a life outside of here. Being idle doesn't suit my personality and I wanted something to do.
All these started because of this marriage. Who first pioneered the arrangements? My father or father-in-law.
I gazed at him as he went through his phone.
Why did he obliged to this arranged marriage? What was the reason? My father never showed any signs of lack of finance or troubles with his company. As far as I know, he never borrowed or took a loan to expand his company. He always believed hard work pays without having to beg as he sees loan as begging.
That was how my father operated. So what really happened?
“Sorry for the delay Ellie, I work from home sometimes and I needed to deal with this emergency” He dropped his phone on the table, interrupting my thoughts. I wished all these questions would be answered. And I'm going to ask him.
“You wanted to see me Ellie” he asked, not smiling. His expression was pleasant but purposeful.
“I just want to tell you about my career, my studies and the need to also have a life outside of here” I said, hoping he'd understand and accept my request.
He didn't respond immediately. Like he was digesting the words I said.
“Do you feel uncomfortable in this house? You don't like it here?” He asked.
That was the least question I expected and I don't think I'd like where this is going to go.
“Not like I feel uncomfortable. I just wanted to pursue my career. I want to have something doing” I paused “My parents didn't allow me to go out or do things, I just wanted my life even now I'm married” I said it calmly, a way he had to know I needed this.
“I understand what you mean Ellie, but it's not going to happen. Not yet. You just got married and your new home needs you, your husband needs you. You'll surely continue your studies. Just hang in a little and fulfill while you're here.”
I looked down at my hands. For how long was I going to keep waiting for permission to live my own life.
I clasped my hands on my lap. So even here, it was still about what everyone else needed.
What does he mean by my husband needs me. His annoying and rude son?
I just couldn't wrap my head around his words.
“For how long?” I asked.
Why do I always don't get to decide things myself? This isn't the life I dreamt of.
“For as long as it's being settled” he said, carefully.
“Settled? What's going to be settled?” I asked
“Just take my word for it Ellie. You'd be fine.” He said. This was getting even more complicated.
He noticed my expressed confusion. Adjusted himself on his seat and smiled at me.
“How's your marriage with Jayden? I know it's only been two days, but you'd get to love him more as you get to know him.”
Why does he speak so highly of his son?
He didn't know what his son had done.
I gave Jayden 24hrs. But I didn't have a plan yet. I just wanted to speak to him about my career which he just turned me down.
Seeing how he speaks more of his son, I think this is my moment.
I remembered the look on Jayden's face on the dining table when I told his father I wanted to speak with him. Was he afraid?
I smiled inwardly.
Mr Spark may not have agreed for me to continue my career but I have to win him over. He needs to be convinced of my ability.
“Jayden left the room yesterday. I wanted to speak with him like a new couple does. But he stormed out of the room with some of his things and slept in the guest room yesterday.” I said calmly. Like one who was denied her favorite flavor.
“He did that?” I could see his anger rising
A smile almost crossed my face. But I had to behave and do it inwardly.
“Don't worry, I'll speak to him. He'd come to his senses and return to his room tonight.” Mr Spark said. Assuring me.
I almost jumped with excitement. But I couldn't. This has to look real.
And just like that. Without much effort, my threat has fulfilled itself.
With the way Mr Spark said it. I knew he'd definitely make Jayden return to his senses.
And I can't wait to be free and live my own life.
I excused myself as I stood up.
This is going to be fun.
I walked out of that study room lighter than I'd walked in. I didn't get what I came for. But I left with something better.
