"Can I kiss you?" Ola asked, his eyes locked on hers. Bolu felt a flutter in her chest, and for a moment, she wanted to kiss him too. But she hesitated, remembering the lie she'd told about having a boyfriend. She wondered how he'd perceive her if she gave in to the moment. Despite her attraction, she didn't think it was a good idea, especially since they'd only known each other for a month.
"Uhmm, I need to go," Bolu said, frantically searching for her earpiece. She loved that earpiece and didn't want to lose it, but more importantly, she needed an excuse to leave. "Is it because I asked to kiss you?" Ola's voice was laced with concern.
"I have a boyfriend, Ola," Bolu said firmly. "You can't expect me to kiss you. That'll be cheating." Ola's expression changed, and he said, "Do you know what your boyfriend is doing right now? I don't mean to be a killjoy, but you can't trust a guy 100%." Bolu's defenses rose.
"That's why I'm not trusting you right now," she fired back. "You're just looking for a rebound, and I'm not going to be that." Ola's eyes blazed with hurt. "Wow, really? You think I'm stupid or this is all a joke to me?" he said, his voice rising.
"I'm not that kind of guy, and it's painful you think I am, after how open I've been to you," Ola continued, his words dripping with disappointment. "Such a friend you are. A friend you asked to kiss, do you kiss all your friends?" Bolu felt a pang of guilt.
"Uh Ola?
you know what... sorry I asked if I could," Ola said, his voice laced with sarcasm. "I just thought you were into me like I am into you. But it's fine, I'll leave you alone." Bolu's worry grew as she realized she'd hurt him.
"I didn't mean it that way," Bolu said, trying to clarify. "I just don't feel it's right to kiss another guy while I have a boyfriend." She hoped he'd understand, but the tension between them was palpable.
