CHAPTER FORTY Late on Sunday night, Leah remembered she had an appointment with Nat’s solicitor in the morning. So much had been happening that she hadn’t thought about it once. She arrived five minutes early and his secretary showed her straight into the tidy office with its shelves of big legal books and oil paintings of old ships at sea. After he had spoken, she sat blinking at him, not sure she had heard him correctly. “You must have got it wrong, Mr Johnson,” she said. “I heard you say that I can choose a keepsake from the house, something to remind me of Nat. That’s very nice of her. I hope she said I could keep Nina, too. But…” Her words trailed off to nothing as her mind spun with the implications of what Peter Johnson had just told her. She felt sure she must have misunderstood
