CHAPTER FIVE Along with many other rural towns and villages, St Jofra had its own legend which gave rise to an annual festival. Helston had its Floral Dance. Padstow had its Obby Oss. St Agnes had Giant Bolster. St Jofra had the Jofra Worm. Some people argued that the Worm should be a dragon, like the Lambton Worm and the Linton Worm, ‘wyrm’ being the Old English word for dragon. These ‘wyrms’, so the booklet sold in Galleria Jofra, the arts and crafts gallery in the high street, informed Leah, were in fact wingless dragons, though they differed from worms in as much as they had dragonish heads and several pairs of feet with large talons.
