Chapter Four: The Castle Beneath the Shadows

1006 Words
The forest seemed endless. Seraphina had spent her entire life believing she knew Asterwyn. The quiet village. The ancient trees. The hidden paths. But tonight, everything she knew felt like a beautiful lie. She ran beside Damon, her hand still held tightly in his. She noticed something strange. He never pulled her. Never forced her to follow. He moved at her pace. As if even after two hundred years… He was still afraid of losing her. “Where are we going?” Seraphina asked. Damon did not look back. “Somewhere they cannot find you.” “That is not an answer.” A small smile appeared on his face. “You still hate incomplete answers.” “I hate being kept in the dark.” The smile disappeared. “I know.” There was something painful in the way he said it. Seraphina slowed. “Why?” Damon stopped. For a moment, only the sound of the wind surrounded them. “Because the last time I kept secrets from you…” His voice became quieter. “I lost you.” She stared at him. The Shadow King. The feared immortal. The man who could command darkness itself. Yet those words sounded like a confession from someone broken. “Then tell me the truth now.” Damon looked at her. “I will.” A pause. “But the truth may make you hate me.” Seraphina held his gaze. “Maybe I already do.” Something flickered in his eyes. Pain. But he only nodded. “I deserve that.” The answer surprised her. Before she could respond, the ground beneath them began to shake. The trees moved. The earth split open. Seraphina stepped back in alarm. “What is happening?” Damon walked forward. “Home.” The darkness beneath their feet rose like waves. But instead of swallowing them, it formed a pathway. Stone steps appeared, leading deep beneath the forest. Seraphina stared. “There was nothing here before.” “There was.” Damon looked at her. “You just could not see it.” They descended. The deeper they went, the colder it became. But strangely, Seraphina was not afraid. Because the darkness around them did not feel threatening. It felt familiar. Like a place she had been missing without knowing. At the bottom of the stairs stood enormous black gates. Covered in symbols. Seraphina touched one. The moment her fingers touched the stone, the gates opened. Not for Damon. For her. Damon watched silently. “You still remember.” “I don’t.” “You do.” She frowned. “What does that mean?” Before he could answer, the castle awakened. Thousands of candles lit themselves. The empty halls filled with whispers. The portraits on the walls began glowing. Seraphina walked inside slowly. It was beautiful. Dark, but beautiful. Black marble floors. Silver decorations. Ancient paintings. And everywhere she looked… She saw herself. A painting of a young woman wearing a crown. Her face. Her eyes. Her mark. Seraphina stepped closer. “That’s me.” Damon stood behind her. “Yes.” “When?” “Before.” She touched the painting. A sudden pain struck her head. Images flashed. A grand ballroom. A golden crown. A man standing beside her. Damon. Not as the Shadow King. As a man who smiled. A man who loved her. Then another image. Fire. Screams. Damon covered in blood. Her own hands glowing with light. A sword between them. Seraphina gasped and stumbled back. Damon caught her. “Seraphina.” She pushed away. “You were there.” His expression changed. “Yes.” “You were fighting me.” “Yes.” “Why?” Silence. Then Damon whispered: “Because I let them make you believe I was your enemy.” Her anger faded into confusion. “Who?” “The Order of Light.” The name felt familiar. “The people who raised me?” “Yes.” Seraphina froze. The village priest. The healer. The elders. All the people who told her she was ordinary. “They knew?” Damon nodded. “They knew exactly who you were.” Her hands trembled. “They lied to me my entire life.” “Yes.” “Why?” Damon’s eyes darkened. “Because they were afraid of what would happen when you remembered.” A cold feeling spread through her. “What happens when I remember?” Damon stepped closer. His voice became almost a whisper. “You will remember why they feared you.” A silence followed. Then a voice echoed through the castle. “My king.” Seraphina turned. A woman stood at the entrance. She had long silver hair and eyes like winter. She bowed to Damon. “The enemies have crossed the northern border.” Damon’s face became cold. “How many?” “Thousands.” Seraphina looked between them. “Who is she?” The woman looked at her. And smiled sadly. “I am Lyra.” A pause. “Your former protector.” Seraphina’s eyes widened. “My what?” Lyra bowed again. “Two hundred years ago, I swore an oath.” Her voice softened. “To protect the queen who saved my life.” Seraphina looked at Damon. “You had people who loved you.” Damon looked away. “No.” She frowned. “What?” His voice was quiet. “I had people who loved you.” The words struck her. Because suddenly she understood. Damon was not waiting for his queen. He was waiting for the girl he lost. And maybe… Just maybe… He had been alone all this time because he never stopped loving her. Outside the castle, thunder roared. The war had begun. And somewhere in the darkness beyond the mountains… The one who wanted Seraphina’s power was coming. But he did not want her dead. He wanted her awakened. Because once the queen remembered everything… The world would finally learn why darkness had loved her.
