Chapter Nine: The Queen’s Choice

987 Words
The silence after the memory disappeared was unbearable. Seraphina stood between two men who claimed they loved her. Two men who knew her past. Two men who had shaped the life she had forgotten. Damon held her hand tightly, but not enough to trap her. Never enough to control her. Lucian watched from across the throne room, confident that the truth had finally broken the bond between them. But he did not know Seraphina. Not anymore. And perhaps not ever. “Both of you lied to me,” she whispered. Damon lowered his eyes. “Yes.” Lucian smiled. “I was honest about my feelings.” Seraphina looked at him. “No.” The smile faded. “You were honest about wanting me.” The room grew colder. “But wanting someone is not the same as loving them.” For the first time, Lucian looked offended. Damon looked at her with quiet surprise. Seraphina stepped forward. “I spent my entire life being told who I was supposed to be.” She looked at the throne. “The queen.” She looked at Damon. “The woman who loved the Shadow King.” Then she looked at Lucian. “The weapon you wanted to control.” Her voice became stronger. “But none of you asked who I wanted to become.” The mark on her wrist began glowing. Light filled the room. Lucian’s expression changed. “That power…” Seraphina looked at her own hands. For the first time, she was not afraid of what lived inside her. “I am not the girl who lost her memories.” She looked at Damon. “And I am not the queen who died two hundred years ago.” A pause. “I am Seraphina Vale.” The castle shook. The ancient magic inside the walls answered her. Damon watched silently. Not like a king watching his queen. Like a man watching the woman he loved finally find herself. Lucian clenched his fist. “You are confused.” “No.” “You are choosing him because you remember loving him.” Seraphina shook her head. “I am choosing based on what I see now.” She walked toward Damon. “You could have forced me to remember.” Damon remained silent. “But you didn't.” She stepped closer. “You could have used my power.” “I never wanted your power.” “You could have made me love you again.” Pain crossed his face. “Love that is forced is not love.” Those words broke something inside her. Because they were the words of a man who had spent centuries waiting… Knowing she might return and never choose him. Seraphina reached for his hand. “And that is why I choose you.” The shadows around Damon stopped moving. The entire room seemed to hold its breath. Lucian stared. “No.” Seraphina turned. “Yes.” “You choose darkness?” She smiled sadly. “I choose the person who protected my freedom.” The anger on Lucian’s face finally appeared. “You have no idea what he is capable of.” Damon stepped forward. “And you do?” Lucian laughed. “I know exactly what he is.” His eyes darkened. “And so do you.” Suddenly, the throne room filled with memories. Lucian’s magic forced images into the air. The old kingdom. The war. Damon standing in the middle of a battlefield. Thousands of shadows around him. People screaming. Seraphina watched in horror. Damon looked away. He hated that she was seeing it. “I told you,” Lucian whispered. “He destroyed everything.” Seraphina stared at the vision. Then something strange happened. She noticed something. Not the destruction. The people behind Damon. The soldiers. The innocent families. They were not running from him. They were standing with him. Protecting him. The memory changed. She saw Damon fighting the Order of Light. Not attacking them. Stopping them. She saw him take a magical attack meant for an entire city. She saw him fall. And she saw herself running toward him. “Damon!” The memory ended. Seraphina looked at Lucian. “You only showed half the truth.” Lucian’s face hardened. Damon looked at her. “You remember?” “Not everything.” She touched her heart. “But enough.” She turned to Lucian. “You did not save me.” A pause. “You used me.” The air changed. Lucian’s calm expression disappeared. “You always were difficult.” Seraphina smiled coldly. “And you always underestimated me.” Lucian raised his hand. The entire castle shook. “You think choosing him will save you?” Dark energy filled the room. “You forget one thing.” His eyes glowed crimson. “I created the curse that brought you back.” Damon moved in front of her. But Seraphina stopped him. “No.” He looked at her. “Seraphina.” She shook her head. “For two hundred years, you protected me.” Light gathered around her hands. “Now let me protect you.” For the first time, Damon looked speechless. The queen and the Shadow King stood together. Light and darkness. Not enemies. Not opposites. Two halves of something greater. Lucian stepped back. Impossible. No one had ever combined their powers before. Seraphina looked at him. “You wanted my soul.” Her eyes shone. “But you forgot something.” “What?” She smiled. “My soul was never yours to own.” The castle erupted with light and shadow. And somewhere deep beneath the kingdom… An ancient seal broke. Something older than Lucian awakened. Something even Damon feared. Because the final enemy was never the man standing before them. It was the secret buried beneath their world. And it had just opened its eyes.
