Chapter Six: The Queen Who Awoke

1052 Words
The first thing Seraphina felt was pain. Not the pain of a wound. Not the pain of fear. Something deeper. Like her soul was trying to remember a life her mind had forgotten. She stood in the middle of the castle hallway, holding Damon’s hand, while thousands of memories rushed through her. A golden palace beneath a silver moon. A crown placed upon her head. A kingdom that called her their beloved queen. And him. Damon. Not the terrifying Shadow King from the stories. But the man who used to laugh with her in secret gardens. The man who would sneak away from royal meetings just to bring her wildflowers. The man who looked at her as if she was the entire universe. A tear slipped down her cheek. Damon noticed. “Seraphina?” She looked at him. For one second, she saw two people. The Damon standing before her now… And the Damon from her memories. The man who held her after nightmares. The man who whispered that no darkness in the world could ever take her away. Then the memory changed. Fire. Screaming. Blood. Her own voice filled the burning palace. “Why didn’t you tell me the truth?” Damon stood before her, wounded and exhausted. “I was trying to protect you.” “You lied to me!” “I was afraid.” The memory shattered. Seraphina gasped. Damon caught her before she fell. “What did you see?” She looked at him with confusion. “You were afraid.” His expression changed. “I was.” “Of me?” A painful silence followed. “Yes.” The answer hurt more than she expected. “Why?” Damon looked away. “Because you were the only person who could destroy me.” Seraphina stared at him. “And you still loved me?” His eyes returned to hers. “Even then.” Before she could respond, a loud crash shook the castle. The enemy had reached the inner gates. Lyra rushed into the hall. “My king, they have broken through the first barrier.” Damon released Seraphina’s hand. “Take her to the sanctuary.” Seraphina immediately stepped forward. “No.” Damon looked at her. “This is not a request.” “And I am not your soldier.” His jaw tightened. “You are the reason they are here.” “And hiding me will not make it stop.” Lyra watched silently. She had seen many kings. But she had never seen anyone challenge Damon and survive. Seraphina stepped closer. “You said I was powerful.” “You are.” “Then stop treating me like I am weak.” For a moment, Damon said nothing. Then something changed. Pride. Not the pride of a king. The pride of someone watching the woman he loved become herself again. “You really did come back.” Seraphina frowned. “What?” “The queen.” The castle trembled again. Damon looked toward the battlefield. “Then stand beside me.” Seraphina nodded. Together, they walked toward the throne room. The doors opened. And the enemy army entered. At the front stood Elias. His golden armor shone against the darkness. Behind him were hundreds of warriors carrying the symbol of the Order of Light. Elias smiled. “There she is.” Seraphina felt anger rise inside her. “You erased my memories.” His smile faded slightly. “So you remember.” “Enough.” Damon stepped forward. “You should have killed me when you had the chance.” Elias looked at him. “I tried.” “You failed.” “Because she stopped me.” The room became silent. Seraphina looked at Damon. “What does he mean?” Elias laughed softly. “Tell her, Damon.” Damon said nothing. Elias continued. “Two hundred years ago, your beloved Shadow King was supposed to die.” Seraphina felt her heart tighten. “But you refused to kill him.” Her breath stopped. “You saved him.” The memories came rushing back. Her hands glowing with light. Her sword falling. Damon kneeling before her. And her whisper: “I cannot destroy the man I love.” A wave of emotion overwhelmed her. Elias looked furious. “You ruined everything.” Seraphina looked at him. “You were the one who betrayed us.” “Yes.” The honesty shocked her. Elias smiled. “Because I knew what would happen if you remembered.” “What?” He looked at Damon. “You would choose him again.” The words echoed through the throne room. Damon looked at Seraphina. Waiting. Not demanding. Not forcing. Waiting for her choice. She walked toward him. The entire room watched. Then she took his hand. “I don't remember everything yet.” Damon’s expression remained calm. “But I know this.” She looked at Elias. “The man you call a monster spent two hundred years protecting a love he lost.” Her eyes returned to Damon. “And the man you call a villain was the only one who never abandoned me.” The shadows around Damon moved. Not with anger. With emotion. Elias stepped back. “You would choose darkness?” Seraphina looked at him. “No.” A glow surrounded her. “I choose the man who showed me that darkness can have a heart.” The castle shook. Light and shadow surrounded them together. For the first time in centuries… The power of the queen and the Shadow King awakened as one. Far away, beyond the mountains, the true enemy opened his eyes. Lucian smiled. “So she remembers.” A servant bowed. “What shall we do, my lord?” Lucian looked toward Asterwyn. “Nothing.” A cruel smile appeared. “Let them believe they have won.” A pause. “Love makes people weak.” His eyes turned crimson. “And I will use their love to destroy them.” Back in the castle, Seraphina stood beside Damon. The war had only begun. But something greater had awakened. Not just the queen. Not just the Shadow King. But the bond that had survived centuries. And this time… They would not let anyone tear them apart.
