CHAPTER NINELindsey hated funerals. He hated the service at the funeral home on the Upper West Side. He stood between Moe Zissler and the grieving women, listening to the sound of crying. Zissler wore a dark suit and a white shirt and dark, striped tie, and a yarmulke. Lindsey wore a similar suit but he’d brought a black tie with him from Denver. He knew when he left home that he’d be attending Cletus Berry’s funeral, and he brought the tie as a symbol of— Something. A symbol of something. Ester Berry and Zaffira Fornari and Anna Maria Berry were a mass of blackness. The two women kept the little girl between them, as if the presence of their bodies, one to either side, could protect her from the reality of the event.
