Chapter 25 Jake's POV We sat on one of the three empty round tables there was in the middle when I pull out the envelope from my jacket pocket. One after one I pull it out and lay it in front of her. “Did you know what your husband’s been doing for so many years?” she doesn’t look down at the photos, like she is denying their existence. “Can you look at them?” Emily says, “or are you not even slightly concerned about the lives he’s been destroying under your nose. Did you know about it.” I bet she did, she just played blind. “Robby can't do anything bad.” She’s deep in denial. “She is the best husband and father. I don’t know what you are talking about. It can't be my Robby.” She’s deeper in denial than I thought she was. Mom wrote books after book about woman who fears to take control, who fears to take their destiny away from the hands of their husbands to themselves. It will be a shame for her to tell how common it is to find women she detests. “Will you still be blind after seeing the video of him r****g and murdering a fifteen-year-old girl? will you take responsibility of a boy who died trying to say his friend but ended up accused as a murdered and r****t. His family who had to leave to protect their lives. Will you be able to tell them this?” it’s not pretty when Emily is angry. Even I can tremble, she was breaking down in front of her. “Will you help us?” I added signalling Emily to quit scaring her. Kenna is sobbing, crying, trembling, literally breaking down to pieces. I thought she will break down, and confess what this place in the videos is, we might be able to get better evidences. But no, she was more used to of this than I thought. She took a deep sigh and switched back to the woman she was when she sat on the table. “I'm sorry.” She slid up. “I can't help you detectives. There is nothing I can do.” She took a step away when Emily followed. “There is some good makeup you can use, but you still can't hide those bruises in your arms.” I'm shocked by her claim and so is Kenna. She halts at her pursuit to slither away. “I saw it earlier. You’ve been trying to hide it. it’s so obvious.” I never once noticed that. I wonder if there are some signs people leave behind who are being abused. I wonder if only who have been through can understand them. Who is Emily really? “I can't help you.” she persisted. “Yes, you can. You can save yourself from this vicious cycle of predator and prey. Save your children. You will have everything if he goes to jail.” She turned back. “I don’t know how to stand up for myself. I don’t want my children to get hurt.” “He won't. we will arrest him right now, just if you say in your statement that you helped us get the evidences we have.” She looked at me in the eyes, and then Emily, then back to me. she is taking too long. It will be harder to change her mind. “Okay.” “Okay?” “Yeah. But please make sure he can't get out. I'll help you then.” “We’ll try our best to give him what he deserves.” We take her back to the precinct with us. She gave her statement and in no less than thirty minutes Robby was taken into custody. All the proofs were apprehended. We were need to know what that place was where he kept all the women. Media is covering the case, media is trying to interview the detectives of the case, us. And Emily wasn’t going to leave this opportunity go. She talked to the journalist. She’s gonna do everything she can to be in the good grades of Captain to get on the serial murder case. It’s seven-thirty by the time I get done with work. “I need to go now, Emily. I need to accompany Stella for her dress fitting.” I tell her. “You two seemed pretty close.” “Many people even thought that we were a couple. We were that close.” “You never had any feelings for her.” “She was my buddy. How can I be her friend and still feel more than that? she was like a sister to me.” she laughs as I say that. I don’t ask the reason why. her explanations are always so generic and blunt. “I always knew Jerry liked her. So, I helped them get close.” We walked together to the exit as we spoke. “How?” “Umm! We ate every night at the restaurant she was working and stayed late till night to help her clean up. I brought her home and made her tutor my brother. I took her to our vacation home on Christmas. I've been playing cupid for so many years.” I deserve to be the best man in their wedding. We reached the parked car when I get in. “I'll see you tomorrow.” She said, I nodded. “Yeah, see you tomorrow.” She turned and walk to her car without turning once to see me like there is something left to say, like there is a restlessness in her heart the way she looks at me, I know she feels more than I feel, I know she sees more than I see, it’s probably something she’s feeling. A catch a glance at her once before I drove off.
