Chapter 3 Jake's POV “If you remember anything please do let us know.” She gave him her card before dragging me along to the morgue. I don’t go in, only she does while I wait for her to come out. I hate being dragged but there was no other way to navigate through the halls if she doesn’t guide. I'm almost like a blind man now. I keep my eyes close and breathe through my mouth. I don’t want to risk passing out here. only that will be enough to suspend me. “You can open your eyes.” she said, and I trust her enough to do it. I look around we are standing outside the hospital entrance. “You saved me.” I sigh a relief. “Don’t sweat.” She looks around and adds in a lower voice, “Don’t you find the father weird?” “Weird as?” “I mean I don’t know. He’s just acting weird. he kept looking away from us. Couldn’t meet the eyes. He didn’t answer any our questions. And he, he just seemed so nervous.” I laugh at her statement; I shouldn’t laugh after what I saw. “Poor man lost his daughter Emily, almost lost his wife. What do you think he should act like? He is just depressed.” “He just seemed a bit off. Nervous, and angry. Why would he be nervous?” “Maybe we should stop thinking about his grief and start looking for clues in his house. what did the doctor said for the daughter.” I ask turning on the engine. “She was stabbed five times in the chest. Five times in the face. the stab marks are so erratic, it’s like someone with no eyes was trying to kill her.” “Maybe someone with closed eyes. but the wife has a head trauma.” “Same person didn’t attack the both of them.” “So, there are two assailants?” “Possibly.” ** Next evening, We drove out of the hospital and back to the precinct. I don’t think the case is going well. we already have different opinions and arguments on the husband. She thinks he is hiding something. That he is the killer. And I don’t believe a father who is trembling like a fish out of water would dare to do this to his own child. Now all we’re waiting for is Mike to confirm which of us is right. I'm pretty sure it’s me. And this happened sooner than I thought. We are in the precinct getting ready to be done with our shifts and Mike reported us the results. “See, I told you.” Emily gleamed with childish joy, eyes shining like a child. No matter how much cold she tries to be with others, trying to be heartless and no-emotion woman, she is still like a child from inside. “There is no forced entry in the house, no cameras caught anyone getting in or out which can only mean the culprit was inside. Think that the family had just three people two of whom are injured, who would be your best bet?” I am wrong again. The husband really killed them. “The dad.” I replied defeated. She flicked her fingers at my face. “Right. Right. Right. Right, as always.” If we weren’t inside the precinct and in somewhere isolated, I bet she must've been dancing in glee. “Now we take him for some serious questions. Let’s bring him here.” She clicks her knuckles when walking to the vehicle outside. “What did you said you’ll do when you lose the last time?” “Dinner.” I added opening the door and settled in. “Okay, dinner. I remember.” “Let’s go to his house, get the guy and then you are buying me dinner.” I nodded. “I still think there is something else. He is innocent.” “You think everyone is like you. Everyone is innocent. What you see isn’t always the truth. People are cold-blooded criminal. Not everyone had loving families like yours.” You have to be brought in some kind of way to think everyone out there is a predator or to think everyone are just harmless. Emily and I are polar opposites. And I can only credit this to mom who always let us experience the best in people, but things started to change ever since my decision to enlist in the army, but I still have to remind this to myself. I wonder why is she like that. “Although I haven’t experienced loss, doesn’t mean I have always been just happy. I'm not innocent Emily I've done some weird s**t too.” she is the only one I talk to other than my family, about everything. And she still doesn’t know anything about me. The door was already unlocked as we knock on it, it creaked ajar. Emily opened it wide. “Why bother them?” Emily dances her shoulders still living the joy of her another victory. We invited ourselves in. I can't believe we are trespassing being cops. “Don’t sweat. It’s actually the exciting part of being in this business. “Mr. Rui?” I called out. “Hello.” The house seemed soulless. Quiet. Deserted. “We want to ask you a few questions. We met you yesterday.” No reply. So, we went further and further in like it’s our house. The apartment we entered was too meek and dull. And literally soulless. “I told you he’s run away.” She mocks after several failed attempts of calling Rui out. “Let’s check the bedrooms. Maybe he’s hiding somewhere here.” I followed her lead. She took me to the room with an open door, I don’t if it was a smart or the dumbest move. I think the later. “It’s empty.” “I see that.” I reply. She dragged me to the one next to it. “Who are you?” the woman jumped out of the bed. I think she is better than yesterday, but still traumatic. “How did you get in? Where is Rui?” she fuses herself back to the corner of the wall screaming her heart out. “Michelle.” Emily walks to her, slowly approaching. First step, second step, third step… “We are here to take you to a safe place. We need to take you away from your husband. This place is unsafe for you.” she walks and walks and walks closer to her only for Michelle to be more freaked by her. “Get away from me.” Emily keeps walking and walking not noticing the thing she hold in her hand hiding behind. I thought it was something small. Oh no, it’s some metal, it reflected the only light in the room straight on my eyes. I made a quick run to Emily trying to push her away. “Watch out!” the loud piercing voice turned us both to the door before I could get her away. Rui was there. Standing. Startled. More than any of is. “Ah!” and the gush of blood made me meet my end. “No.” I heard a scream and everything went blind, everything went deaf and dead… and dark… and dark…. and dark. Everything turned dark. Maybe everything turned dark for me.
