Knock. Knock.
“Meredith! You ok?”
Knock! Knock! Knock!
“I'm up! I'm up!"
I hate getting woken up, especially when I’m in the middle of love-making in my dreams. I sit up and look around as if I was having a hard time remembering what just happened and where it happened at. Never have I ever had a toy knock me out the way that thing did. I glance at the clock and realize I have been sleeping for the past two hours. I search for my phone, and of course Irv is no longer on it. I send him a quick text, apologizing for falling asleep on him, while also reminding him that it was his fault. Grabbing the little devil of a rabbit, I hop out of bed, heading straight for the bathroom. The evidence of my pleasure displayed all around it. I give it a nice washing, put it back in its box, and place it in my drawer.
When I walk into the living room, Laura is sitting in her usual spot. I try to walk out without drawing any attention to myself.
"Meredith!"
"Gilr...why are you yelling?" I ask her as I slink my way to the pantry.
"What happened to you? I was calling and you never answered." I can hear the concern in her voice.
"As you can see, I was asleep." I wouldn't dare tell her what put me to sleep though. I deserve a drink after that show.
I open the pantry and reach for my favorite "after s*x" snack...a bag of caramel popcorn. I get a glass out of the cabinet and make me a cocktail: a double shot of Svedka Blue Raspberry, Lemonade, and a splash of Sprite on ice.
"You are acting as if you got some d**k while I was gone." Laura looking at me with curiosity in eyes.
"Not d**k, but I did let off a monster of an organsm while you were gone." I smile and wink at her. She takes her hands and covers her ears. You would think Laura was virgin how she reacts to me talking about my sexscapades.
We are both in our respective areas on the sofa. Sundays are usually pretty laid back for us. Kind of a time where we can let our hair down and just relax. I would prefer to watch football during this time of the year, but Laura isn't much of a sports person. We settle on a movie, The Big Wedding. Ultimate cheesey chick flick.
"So...." Uh oh. Whenever Laura starts with "so" and a pause, something unsettling has happened.
"What did you get into now?" I know whatever comes out her mouth next is either going to make me laugh or make me cry.
"I didn't get into anything. I met someone."
Speechless.
"You...you met someone? When? Where?" I think this is the first time Laura has ever mentioned or showed interest in someone other than her family. I always admired her ability to keep her head on straight and not be distracted by anyone or anything, including me and my shenanigans.
She sits over in her spot, slowly drinking what is in her cup. I can she the wheels turning. She's contemplating something.
"So, that's it?" inquiring minds want to know.
She adjusts herself, turning to face me.
"Her name is Luna."
Her. What does she mean her?
"I have been trying to figure out how to talk to you about this. Since my mother past, I feel like I can finally be who I truly want to be in the world. My father is not the judgmental type. He left that to my mom. I have always had a thing for girls, for as long as I can remember. I also knew that my mother would never be accepting of me because of it, so I kept it. I mean, I like guys and find some of them attractive, but physically, a woman catches my eye more."
Luckily I made this drink with a double shot! What is going on in this world of mine?
I have never been the one to interject my opinions on what makes them happy. Girl, guy, doesnt matter with me. Again, Laura is showing me how truly wonderful of an individual she is. Sometimes, we have to put our feelings aside in order to protect the ones we care for, even if it makes things a little uncomfortable for awhile.
"Meredith?" Laura looking at me worried. "Are you ok? I know I shouldn't have said anything." She sinks back into the couch, taking a pillow and covering her face. I move closer to her and take the pillow from her. I place my hand on the side of her face, moving it towards me.
"Laura, you are a strong, beautiful woman. The courage that you have shown over the last year is admirable. This puts you over the top. Regardless of what anyone else says, I love you. You are my friend and I will forever be here to support you." I lean in and give her a kiss on the forehead. A tear rolls down her cheek. I wipe it away.
"No need to cry. I am happy that you are now achieving your happiness." Laura springs up, wrapping her arms around my neck, squeezing it tight. We are both so unbalanced, that we fall over, laughing hysterically.
It takes us a few minutes to collect ourselves off of the of the floor.
"Looks like shots are in order." We head over to the bar area and Laura sits at the table.
"I need to eat before we start with these" Laura said as she places her head on the table.
She has a point. It now almost 7p and I could go for some real food.
"Chinese?" I suggest.
"That works for me. P.F. Changs?" That is her favorite spot.
"Sure. I'll have my usual. I am sure they have yours saved since you order there so much." She laughs and goes to get her phone. While she orders dinner, I pour drinks and take them back into the living room. Laura comes back at the same time.
"Here you go. Cheers!"
"Cheers!"
Falling back onto the couch, I find the remote for the tv and restart the movie.
"I feel so much better now that I have been able to tell someone." Her smile says it all.
"I am glad you were able to let it out. So, tell me about her. All I know is her name is Luna."
For the next hour, Laura tells me about her. She describes her as 5'6, slim but thick build, mixed chick (like me), beautiful green eyes with long jet black hair. They met a couple of weeks ago at the Whole Foods a few blocks from campus, and come to find out, she is a student as well, studying Communications. Watching her talk about her was like watching a kid on Christmas morning. Her face shining bright with hope and wonder. She is interrupted when there is a knock at the door.
Food. Finally!
I grab my bowl of chicken fried rice, leaving her complex meal in the bag. The smell of it almost makes me want to cry. Can't believe I have gone this long without eating. I savor every bite. This is giving me life to the fullest.
"When are you guys going out?" I still have a ton of questions about my friend's new love interest.
"Actually, I was thinking that we could all hang out this weeked, after the fashion show."
"I think that would be cool. Group settings are always a great place to get to know someone." I am so excited! I have ideas flooding my brain of where we can go and do.
"Awesome. Talking to her on the phone has been the highlight of my day lately. There is just one propblem." She puts her fork down, and takes a sip.
Oh no. Do I want to know what this problem is?
Sounding a bit discouraged, Laura says "See, all of my, um...sexual experience has been with guys. I have never actually been with girl."
I stop mid chew and look directly at her. "Never?" I ask.
"Never. Not a kiss, nothing. I was never in the position to do so."
I am perplexed as to how/why she would bring this to me though. I mean, I have made my rounds, but I have never actually had anything other than straight s*x. Well, except for Sasha.
Holy Hell! She's going to ask me for help. I have got to find a way out of this s**t and fast.
"Have you ever watched girl on girl porn?" Let's see what research she has done. Clearly there are other avenues other than me she can take. Please, let there be other avenues.
"I have come across it once or twice. Nothing that caught my attention though."
Fuck. Ok, Meredith. Think.
"Ok. Well, we can look at some if you want. Find out what you like. That would be my first suggestion." I grab my glass. Time for another Svedka lemonade. I wasn't ready for this.
Meanwhile, Laura is sitting there looking confused and pitiful. There is no way I am going to get out of this.
"I'm sure we can start there." Laura's voice is low. Sensual like. "But, you know I am a hands on learner."
I couldn't turn around quick enough.
"What does that mean Laura? What do you want me to do? I might be a little freer than you sexually, but I am not familiar like that." I hurry up and finish mixing my beverage.
I down it.
"You are though. When you told me about what happened between you, Mario, and Sasha, all I could focus on were the moments between you and Sasha."
This can't be happening right now. I have known Laura since freshman year. There is no way I can let myself get involved like that.
There has to be a line.
At the same time, she is my friend and know that it took all the balls she had to confide in me. How would I look not helping her, guiding her to where she is comfortable to continue on her own. Thinking hard and trying not to make eye contact, I walk back over to the couch.
"Am I hearing this right? You want me to show you what it is like to be with a girl and only a girl?" I probably sounded like a broken record with how slow I asked her that questions.
Laura walks over to me and kneels down next to me.
"You are one of the closest friends that I have. I don't want to start this new chapter in my life, completely uninformed. I know you are not a lesbian one hundred percent, but you have been intimate with a woman. I just want you to show me the basics. That's all."
Looking down at her, she is on the verge of tears. I can only imagine what this means to her, and what it took to get her to this point. Everyone has something that they want to keep more private than others. Explains why I didn't even know that Luna existed two weeks ago. I place my food on the end table next to me.
Deep breath in. Exhale.
I sigh. "Fine." I say as I close my eyes and hers fill with shock and delight.
"Seriously, you will help me?" She hops up from the floor, nearly knocking the coffee table over.
"Yes," shaking my head, "I will help you. One time. That's it and you are doing the dishes for a month."
Laura climbs back onto the sofa. You would have thought she won the lottery. We manage to finish dinner and our movie without anymore new revelations.
************************************************************************
Wednesdays are the worst. Not only because they feel like the slowest days of the week, but also because I have one of my most difficult classes, Physics. Science has been one of the more harder subjects for me. Honestly, at some point the views become more objective than subjective, making it hard for me to grasp the concepts. Whether I like it or not, I am near graduation and can't afford a set back. Haven't thought much into what I want to do after graduation, but one thing is for sure: I am getting out of Georgia.
I hear those famous words "alright class, that is all. See you next week." Music to my little ears.
As I gather my things, I can see Kim making her way over.
"Hey Meredith!" Sounding full of excitement.
"Hey Kim." We embrace. "How have you been?" I pick up my bag and head towards the door.
"I can't complain. Counting down the days to freedom."
Even though we werent roommates anymore, we did share a few classes together so we never lost touch of each other.
"Listen, are you going to the party Friday?" Kim has always been a happy person, but she is extra today.
I laugh, "Girl, what party and what is with you? Who put a bounce in your step today?"
She gently shoves me as if that is going to get her out of answering my question.
"You know, the kick off for Greek week." She looks at me confused, like I haven't been here for three years now.
I forgot all about that being THIS weekend. Usually, that would be a party that Mario would be in charge of, meaning I would work it somehow. Now that he wasn't here anymore, I might actually get to enjoy the party.
"I suppose. Haven't missed one yet." I too, now have a little pep in my step.
Kim takes off out the door. "Alright. Call me later. I'm going to be late."
"See ya!" I yell back.
I can feel my phone buzzing in my pocket. I am struggling trying to get it out.
"Why did I wear such tight ass jeans?" I ask myself.
I manage to get it out. Dillan's name flashes across the caller-ID. I never did respond to his message a few days ago. It completely slipped my mind.
"Hello." Sounding winded.
"Hey you. It's me Dillan, you know, your long lost friend." I can hear his faint light chuckle.
"Oh, whatever. Some of us are trying to finish school. And, I'm not the one lost. I haven't heard from you in forever. What do I owe for this pleasure?"
Even though it has been a year, I think about him often. We are super good friends to be of the opposite s*x. He was probably the only guy who genuinely wanted to get to know me and not screw me, in the beginning.
"It's the Greek Week kick off."
"Yeah, and...we have it every year."
"Right. So this year some of my brothers are going, and I decided to tag along. What better excuse to have for being in the same city as you."
My breath catches in the back of my throat. Dillan...here...at my school for the weekend? Automatic butterflies in my stomach.
"You. Coming here? Friday??" I am sure I sound as shocked as I feel right now.
"Ha. Yes. I actually get in tomorrow, but we will be there Friday. Will you save a dance for me? Gotta have at least one with the hottest girl on campus."
My head is spinning."Most definitely." I say it even before I realize I have said it.
With pure joy in his voice, he says "You just made my weekend, Meredith."
"That's sweet. Look, I have to run. I have practice in a few, and I have got to get myself together." I'm trying my best to end this before I say something and get myself in too deep.
"Oh yea, the fashion show on Saturday? We heard about that. Can't wait to see what they put you in."
"You heard about our fashion show, in Florida?"
I am at a loss.
"We all talk, fraternities that is, so we always know what's going on."
I need to transfer.
"I'll let you go. Sounds like you are in a rush."
"Thanks hun. Let me know when you make it in. Talk to you later. Bye." I hang up before he can say it back.
Dillan is going to be here. Friday. At the fashion show Saturday. The same fashion show that Travis will be in. This is going to be a mess. I get to my car and make the 10 minute drive in total silence. Me, my thoughts, and my mouth wide open. This won't be that bad. I mean, Travis and I went to dinner once. Today I will tell him that I am not interested. Now if he decides to be what they call "petty", and mentions to anyone about what happened after dinner, then I might have a small issue. Even though we are all technically adults, it is hard to find a group between the ages of 20-24 that act like it.
I make it to the apartment, walk in the door and drop everything. Kick off my shoes and head straight for the bar. Laura is in the kitchen, cooking what smell like spaghetti.
"Hey you. Everything ok? You look like you've seen a ghost." She washes her hands and walks to the side of the counter.
In a mothering tone, she asks "What happened?"
"Well, at the end of class, Kim came up to me asking me about Greek Week and going to the party this Friday." I pour my double shot.
Patron. I need the strong stuff. As I sit down at the table, Laura comes over and sits across from me.
"I knew it was this week, but I wasn't sure the day of the kick off. Mario isn't going to be here, is he? I got a box cutter with his name on it." She makes slashing motions in the air.
I shake my head. "No crazy. He is not going to be here. Dillan is coming."
Her mouth drops just like mine did when he said the words.
"Dillan, coming to Atlanta?" She speaks slow, deliberate, ensuring each word comes out right.
"Dillan. Coming to the kick off Friday and the fashion show Saturday." I flop down in the chair.
Laura gets up from her seat. "Here, let me pour you another one." Handing me another shot, "so, what are you going to do? I mean, how long has it been?"
"Since I have physically seen him? Almost three years. This has been my first time talking to him in a year."
I throw the shot back and lay my head on the table.
My distraughtness comes from the fact that my crush on him never went away. We never got the chance to actually explore anything more than the friend zone before he left. Now here it is, four years later, and he is coming out of of left field. I am not ready for this. This man has the capabilities to f**k my world up, and that's without ever sleeping with him. I thought I had come to terms with how things were between us, being at peace with just remaining great friends. I have this dreadful feeling in my stomach that this weekend is going to be one for the books.
"Babe, it's 5pm. We gotta get going to practice." Laura walks over with another shot in her hand.
"One for the road." We both laugh.
We make it ot practice with about 10 minutes to spare. Long enough for me to find a corner to hide in, away from Travis. Too bad it didn't work. He spots me as soon as he walks in the door. The sexy piece of chocolate known as Travis heads straight towards me. I'm a little perplexed because there is a female walking in behind him that I haven't seen before at our practices.
Hmm.
I sit down to change my shoes.
"Hello Meredith." That's the voice that took me out of reason and had be calling the heavens.
"Hey Travis." I walk over to give him a hug. While doing so, this female is giving me the side eye. She clears her throat.
"Oh Meredith. This is Amy, my wife."
She must have seen the look on my face because she immediately looked at him for an explanation. I gather my composure.
"Hi. So nice to meet you." I try and flash a smile, but I am having a hard time keeping my thoughts off of my face.
I can't believe this creep is married. All that bullshit he was talking about wanting to see my again. Blah, Blah, Blah. I knew there was a reason why he turned me off.
Taylor's faint voice echos across the room. "We are starting in 5 minutes."
"Amy, could you run to the car and grab my bag? I left it in the trunk." Travis turns to her and gives her his keys.
"Sure. Be right back."
As soon as I knew she was out of earshot, I let him have it.
"What the f**k?!? You're married?!" I sit back down in disbelief.
"It's a very complicated situation, but yes I am married." He walks over closer to me. I get up and step to the side of him.
"And you didn't think to mention that before?"
He is about to make this let down way easier than I expected.
"We have an understanding. It's not the traditonal set up." I turn to walk past him, and he grabs my arm. I yank it away.
"I don't care if you had your situation signed off by the Pope, I don't do married."
Ugh Men can be so trifling.
"Listen, let me explain it to you more over coffee afterwards." I can hear the despiration in his voice.
"I am not sure what type of girl you took me for, but being a sidechick is not it. I can't get involved with whatever you have going on, so I'll pass on the coffee."
Taylor comes over the bullhorn. "Let's get started people."
I walk away.
"Meredith. Damn."
We go through our first line up without any hickups. I am waiting for her to hand out the wardrobe so that I can fill Laura in on the latest gossip. That is the one thing about men here in Atlanta. Some feel that no matter the situation, they should be allowed to have whatever they want, when they want. They have little to no respecit for boundaries, and believe that p***y is disposable.
Fuck that! I am not that type of girl. I am sure that is the reason why I tend to go for men that are older, more established, and having no time for the bullshit.
The moment finally comes where I can whisper in Laura's ear what was told to me. She looks at me bewildered. I point Amy out to her, sitting over by the door on her phone.
"And he had the nerve to think I was still going to have coffee with him. Boy please!"
Laura laughes. "You dodged a bullet. That could have been a mess."
"Tell me about it."
After changing, Taylor has us run through the routine three more times before she is satified.
"Alright you guys" Taylor begins. "I just want to say thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to this. You have no idea how much I appreciate all of you. See you at the big show on Saturday!"
Everyone gives her an applause. I go over to the corner and grab my things. Travis is hot on my heels.
"Meredith, just wait a minute." I stop.
"What Travis? What could you possibly have to say? Does she even know who I am?"
Stuttering he says, "No...no. Not exactly. She knows that I went to dinner with someone that I was doing the fashion show with."
"Oh, so she doesnt know that you shot c*m on the roof of your car after you ate my p***y?"
Out of nowhere I hear, "Travis! You did what?!?"
Awkward!
"Look, Amy I didn't know he was married." I feel terrible. The hurt on her face is indescribable. She turns to Travis and literally slaps the dumbfounded look off his face, storming off afterwards. Luckily for him, everyone had already made it outside, leaving just the three of us in the building.
"Amy!! Wait!" Travis grabs his things and runs after her.
I'm not sure what he thought was going to happen by bringing her, knowing that I would be here. Common sense just isn't all that common, I guess. I head out the door. This night could not have ended on a higher note.
