Branka’s POV I sat so still in the car that I was in at the moment that one would think that I was actually a mannequin. And I hope to every deity that my awkwardness was not showing. This was my first time in a car. Apart from the fact that I could tell that the car was posh and different from most of the ones that I’ve seen around, I felt as though if I moved around too much, I might stain the car with some invisible dirt that was always around me. I was clean and I knew it. In fact, I even smelled fresh since I had insisted on having my bath before going anywhere with him at all, but I still couldn’t get the feeling that I was not supposed to be in a car this fine. The leather was digging into my back and ass decently. And I could tell that this was the most luxury that I’ve had access to in my entire life. He was sitting beside me. His presence was cold and sharp and it was hard to act and ignore the fact that he was there. I couldn’t even try to do it if I attempted to. There was a partition between where we were sitting and the person driving, so I could not even pretend to stare at the person. And there was nothing much in here to fix my eyes on and get lost in. So, I stared at the moving trees on my side as we moved very fast. The silence in the car was deafening. If a pin was dropped, I’m sure that the sound would resonate through this place. My eyes closed and I started to reminisce about my life and how I got here. If anyone had told me that I would get out of the clutches of Alpha Dorian, of Jessica, or even the friends of my alpha, I would have said it was a lie. A beautiful one that would not come to pass. I tried to make sure that my thoughts didn’t bleed out and I made use of the fake shield that I have built over the years to protect my mind so that the man beside me would not listen in on my thoughts. I really hoped it worked because I was dealing with an alpha of his caliber. He was quite different from what I’ve heard. He has different stories surrounding him and none of them were good at all. He was scary and I’ve experienced that firsthand. Maybe not exactly but yeah. He was not called the alpha king for nothing. He earned it. It was not handed to him. Some people say that he drinks blood from the skulls of the people he killed. Thinking about something like that made me shiver in my boots a little. “I’ve not heard that one before now.” His cold voice cut through the silence and I jerked where I was sitting and turned my head to look at him. “Are you hearing my thoughts again?” I asked stupidly. He shrugged. “It came to me on its own. Not like I take pleasure in hearing what people are thinking.” He said and I scoffed. “I bet. But I’d like it if you keep it to yourself and give me the illusion of privacy whenever we’re together.” I snapped without meaning to. Oh God. I need to stop doing this with him. There was silence and he did not say anything to reply to me. I looked at him slowly, trying to decipher what was going on in his head. But his face was stone called without any emotion there. “Say something.” I pushed. “You seem to want to make me do a lot of talking that I’m not up for.” He said dryly. “Well, if you took me away from my pack and from what I would have called normal before all this happened, you might as well think and learn to communicate with me.” I rushed out. I think my head-to-mouth filter is broken because I was not even processing whatever I was saying before my mouth blurted it out. Finally, he looked at me. “Do you hate the fact that you’re with me so much?” He asked and I froze. “What are you talking about?” “From what I could tell while you were still there, you were not having a good life. Our first encounter was you trying to actually unalive yourself in front of me and then you lashed out when I stopped you from doing it. Telling me all the attempts you’ve made at taking your own life to end your misery and none of them worked out. Somehow, I get to discover that you’re my supposed mate. Why then don’t you feel like you owe me a thank you for taking you out of the hellhole you were living before and you called life?” I allowed myself to process the words that he had just said to me. Anger bubbled inside of me and I tried to suppress it because I knew that there was no way in the seven heavens that I would not snap and do or say something I was not supposed to. “You can’t blame me for not being very optimistic about the new opportunity that has been placed in front of me. For all I know, you could be worse than Alpha Dorian. And he’s already done worse things to me than I can even imagine any other thing that you can attempt to do.” “And also, someone of your caliber, there is no way you will take someone like me to be your mate. Ever. And I’ll not believe that pile of trash. Maybe I’m thankful to you for taking me out of there. At least for now. So maybe if I have to go through it again, it will all have to be another location and change of scenery. Who knows, I might fall into the luck of actually being able to get myself killed at your place right?” I sarcastically said with a wide smile on my face. His face was still and cold. The only tiring thing that could make me know what was going on was the blinking of his eyes. And that gave off nothing. “We will see about that.”
