Cracks In The Bond.

Winter’s POV: I immediately pull on the torch and open the door again just as it is about to close. To my frustration, when I open the door again, there's nothing there. Dammit. Keon.” I exhale slowly. “Please tell me you saw that?” He shakes his head. There's no f*****g way. It was right there! I wait and stare, waiting for it to make a reappearance. I wait for a minute, then two, till I've been standing in the same spot for nearly 10 minutes. Nothing. No golden eye, just sunlight on glass. No Eye of the Witcher watching me. My heart is still racing like it never left. Keon stands behind me, quiet and confused, his energy tense. He shakes his head again. He looks at the window, really looks at it, then looks back at me. “There's nothing there Winter. Are you sure you're okay? Do you want to lie down?” He's looking at me like I'm crazy. Agitation floods my nerves. I feel like pulling the roots out of my hair. “I. Am. Not. Crazy.” I spell out slowly. “I never said you were” “Your face did.” He exhales slowly. “Winter, I swear to you, there's nothing there. If there was, I would've sensed it.” He sounds like he's trying to explain something to a child. “Doesn't mean I imagined it,” I mutter under my breath. Silence stretches again. It's heavier than before. I turn to him, frustration boiling in my chest. “You keep doing that.” “Doing what?” “Acting like you know things then shutting down when I ask questions.” He sighs. “You don't understand Winter-” I interrupt him. “No Keon, you don't understand. This is my body and my life, yet you're standing there like some mysterious puzzle instead of actually helping me!” His jaw tightens. “I'm helping the only way I know how.” “Oh and how exactly have you been helpful? Oh I know! By shutting down on me when I need answers? Or, or by giving vague responses to my questions? Or maybe-” “By not letting you run to my brother every time I don't have an answer!” Oh. There it is. The truth behind the silence. I laugh sadly. “So that's what this is about.” He doesn't speak. “I'm hurting. The person that you claim the moon gave to you as a soulmate is hurt, and all you can care about is your ego. Wow.” My eyes start watering for reasons unsure to even me. It's just so much. “You don't have answers for me. You're just scared I'll ask him instead.” He doesn't say anything. “I needed honesty Keon. Not pride.” The words hit hard. I turn away from him. “Winter-” “I'm really angry right now. But I'm also really confused. Despite all this. My stupid heart feels bad.” “I'm sick of secrets.” I pull down on the torch, opening the door. “Don't come to me unless you're ready to tell me what you know, and trust me in our bond enough to leave Derrick out of it.” I step outside, his dark eyes haunting me long after the door slams shut.
