Chapter Two: A Crown Too HeavyUntitled Episode

752 Words
The council chamber had not known silence in years. Its stone walls, older than the empire itself, were carved with the victories and failures of dead kings. Fires burned low in iron braziers, casting long shadows that crawled across the marble floor like living things. Above them all, the high dome watched, indifferent and eternal. At the center of it stood Alaric. Eighteen. Uncrowned. Condemned before judgment. The word still echoed in his ears. Bastard. Queen Martha’s voice had delivered it without hesitation, without mercy. She stood before the council clad in mourning black, her posture sharp, her grief carefully controlled. This was not a mother defending her son, this was a ruler fighting for power. “A Kingdom is built on bloodlines,” she said, pacing slowly. “On law. On legitimacy. And this boy possesses none of it.” Low murmurs filled the chamber. “He is too young,” one lord said. “He has never led men to war,” another added. “A crown is not a lesson to be learned,” a third scoffed. Alaric felt each word like a stone thrown at his back. He did not turn. He did not bow. His hands curled into fists at his sides, nails biting into his palms. Lucas stood beside Martha, quiet and composed, his expression unreadable, but his eyes burned with satisfaction. “The late king wanted to abandon our kingdom with this…,” A staff struck the floor. “Enough,” the High Chancellor commanded. The chamber fell into uneasy silence. “Prince Alaric,” he said, voice grave, “you have heard the accusations. Before this council decides the fate of the realm… you may speak.” Every gaze turned toward him. For a heartbeat, Alaric said nothing. Then he lifted his head. “A crown,” he began, his voice calm but firm, “does not depend on age.” The words cut through the chamber. “It does not depend on whether I am the queen’s son.” He turned slowly, meeting Martha’s eyes without fear. “And even if I am not, my father’s blood runs through me.” A ripple passed through the lords. Alaric placed a hand over his chest. “That blood is not water.” His voice grew stronger. “My father, King Alden, was not blind. He was not weak. He knew my brother Lucas, his ambition, his strength, his hunger for power.” Alaric’s gaze flicked briefly to Lucas, then returned to the council. “And still… he chose me.” Gasps broke out across the chamber. “He chose me because he knew what this crown would demand,” Alaric said. “He chose me because ruling is not about domination, it is about endurance. About sacrifice.” He took a single step forward. “So if you stand here today and call me unworthy,” he said, voice rising, “then you also call my father a fool.” Silence slammed into the chamber. Then One lord stood. “I see King Alden in him,” Lord Cassian said, his aged voice trembling with conviction. Another rose. “And I.” Then another. Armor clinked. Chairs scraped back. Applause erupted, not polite, not restrained, but thunderous. A roar filled the ancient hall, shaking dust from the ceiling. “He speaks like Alden!” “The same fire!” “The same resolve!” Some councillors bowed immediately. Others hesitated, then followed. The High Chancellor raised both hands, his face pale with awe. “The council has decided,” he declared. “By majority will of the realm, Alaric of Alden’s blood shall be crowned King.” The crown was brought forth. Ancient gold, fractured by time and war, heavy with the weight of every ruler who had worn it before. When it was placed upon Alaric’s head, he felt fear, but he stood still. He stood. The chamber knelt. All except two. Martha remained upright, her face carved from ice. Lucas did not bow. Later, in the shadowed corridor beyond the council chamber, Martha’s voice was low and venomous. “They chose him,” she said. “A boy.” Lucas smiled slowly. “Crowns c***k under pressure.” Martha’s gaze hardened. “Then we will make sure,” she whispered, “that this one shatters.” And far above them, beneath the ancient dome of empire and stone, the crown sat heavy, waiting to test the king who dared to wear it.
