The Unexpected Deal

But to her shock, the man shook his head. Fear gripped her heart again. Would he change his mind because she didn't have money? “Ela, right?“ Mike suddenly asked. He had carried out a thorough check on her, so he knew many things about her. “Mmh,” Ela nodded her head fearfully. “Doctor Ren, even though I don't have the money now, I assure you that I will do everything I can to get it in the next two days. Just tell me how much it is.“ She was willing to even sell their own house or go beg her dad, whom she had never met before. She would do anything to get the money. However, Mike held her hand. But he quickly pulled away when he realized his actions. “When I said I would help, I meant it. This is the reason why I prefer the clinic I told you about. You don't have to pay anything,” he said. Ela almost chocked on the words that she was just about to say. What? She didn't have to pay anything? “Doctor Ren, that…” He didn't know her. Why was he willing to help her? She was sure that her mom's medical bill was going to be very high. “It's fine. You can thank me well once she has recovered,” he said. Ela could not really believe him. “You can't do all this for free, right?“ She asked. She didn't like owing others that much. Even her mom wouldn't believe it if she told her that he treated her free of charge. Mike cleared his throat and looked at her. This time, he did it so directly, and she felt a little unconfortable. “Okay, I'll admit it. I have some selfish ambitions,” he said. Ela sighed. Of course, she knew it. No one would help for free. “What do you want?“ She asked. Her voice was neither cold nor warm. Mike looked at her again and sighed. “Do you remember what happened in here two days ago?“ He asked, his voice a bit hoarse. Ela tensed up, and he immediately noticed it. But he remained so calm as he looked at her. After a while, Ela nodded her head. It was not like she hadn't considered this. It was just that she had tried to convince herself that Dr. Ren was not that kind of person. Her eyes were lowered to the ground to hide her emotions. She was helpless, but she had to help her mom. Mike immediately knew she had misunderstood him. He inhaled deeply. “I feel bad that I had to do something to you. You are young, Ela. I feel like I would have ruined your life if I let you go just like that,” he explained. Hope returned to Ela's eyes, and she looked up at him. Did she misunderstand him? “Ela, I also know that you will feel indebted to me after I treat your mom. I have a suggestion for both of us,” he said. Ela looked back at him. He was right. She liked how straight-forward he was. “Just name it,” she said. She would be glad to pay him back. “You can stay beside me for as long as you can. That way, I won't feel guilty,” he said, his voice slightly trembling. He was hoping that he wouldn't offend her. There was a brief flash in Ela's eyes, which disappeared almost immediately. She wasn't a kid. She knew what staying by his side meant. Since he had taken advantage of her once, he wanted to keep her as his pet and return the favor by treating his mom. She lowered her eyes for a while before she looked up. “What if I am able to pay you one day?“ She asked. Mike was a bit shocked, but he still nodded. “Then I'll be the one owing you. I'll listen to what you say,” he said. Ela nodded her head. “Thank you, Doctor Ren,” she said. She would worry about the rest once her mom had been treated. Mike rekaxed. At least, for the time being, she would be beside him. “Your mom needs urgent treatment, or it will be difficult to deal with it later. If you don't have any objections, we can transfer her tomorrow,” he said. Ela nodded again. “That's fine,” she said. After all, she wanted her mom to recover better than anyone else. “Heart operation isn't an easy thing. However, I promise to do my best,” Mike said again. He had read Mrs. Flurry's hospital record, and he knew her situation. It was bad, but he was still going to help. That was why he asked for his godfather's assistance. “I understand, Doctor Ren,” Ela said. She knew it was difficult, but she believed in the doctor. Still, she would blame him if anything went wrong. They were taking a risk. “I have a favor to ask from you,” Doctor Ren said. “Could you please keep this a secret? Not so many people know of my identity as Doctor Ren.“ Ela had just realized this. She quickly nodded her head. That was why she hadn't told even her best friend about anything. “Thank you,” the man said with relief. Seeing that there was nothing else to talk about, Ela stood up. “Doctor Ren, if there is nothing else, I will take my leave,” she said. “Okay,” Mike said, but when she reached the door, he couldn't help but call her. Ela looked at him patiently, waiting for him to speak. “I want you to know that I am the kind of man who takes responsibility for all my actions,” he said.
