A Price Of Hope

Ela tensed more. She did not know what to say. She was very stupid to trust him. “I'll talk,” she said, breathing heavily. It was just a piece of information, right? Maybe they would never find him after all. Mike stood still, waiting for her to speak. He was still holding the remote, and it was obvious that he would press it if she made a mistake. “You won't believe me when I tell you I don't know who sent me the message, right?" She asked, her lips trembling. Mike looked back at her. His expression didn't change. She couldn't even tell what he was thinking. “Can you untie my hands, please?“ She finally asked, her eyes glistening with tears. She felt defeated. Mike looked at her coldly. “Why?“ He asked. And Ela realized that she had asked the wrong thing. She took a deep breath and said, “There is a piece of paper in my pockets.“ Mike looked at Joe again before he walked forward and searched her pockets. Ela felt irritated, but she could only grit her teeth. Mike finally pulled out a letter and quickly opened it. His expression turned cold when he read it. 'Dr. Ren Friday, 9 p.m.' “What's the meaning of this?“ Mike asked coldly. Ela shivered. She regretted thinking that the man was handsome before. He was scary. Luckily, she hadn't carried the second letter with her. “I got the letter at my door. I don't know who sent it. My mom is in a critical condition and needs help. I had to take a look,” she rashly explained. Mike looked at the girl again and knew that she was telling the truth. After a while, he sighed. “What even made you think that Doctor Ren would want to treat your mother?“ Ella shivered, fearing that the man would see through her. Then she sighed. “I was anxious. I didn't think straight.“ Mike sighed again. He handed the letter to Joe and asked him to investigate it later. “Release her,” he said. Joe was so shocked. “Boss?“ He called. This was the first prisoner Mike had let go without a scratch. What was going on? “Just do as I say,” Mike said calmly. It seemed like he had made up his mind. “But… she took advantage of you!“ Joe said it angrily. How could they let her go? What if she tarnished his boss's image one day? “Joe!“ Mike said it coldly. And Joe gasped. “Okay,” he said, and he proceeded to untie the girl's hands. Red marks could be seen when she was released, but she appeared calm. “Mister, don't worry. Everything that happened yesterday was a mistake. We should pretend that it never happened. I won't mention it to anyone.“ The expression on Mike's face turned complicated. He had thought that she would make things hard and threaten him. It seemed like her intentions were really pure. After all, she was just a young and innocent girl. He had confirmed it when she tried to hit him earlier. His heart felt a little heavy when he watched her leave calmly. He was sure that no other man had touched her before. Did she really decide to let things go? “I can help your mother,” he finally said, and Ela turned to look at him in confusion. “You can?“ She asked. She was already thinking of another way to help her mom. Could he really help? “Mmh,” the man nodded, as though he knew what he was saying. “But you are not…” “I'm Doctor Ren,” the man said, startling her. So he was actually Doctor Ren. Did that mean that that person didn't lie? “What?“ She raised her head. Was he really Doctor Ren, or was he bluffing? “I...” she stammered, getting emotional. “Take some time and think about it. Meet me tomorrow at the Lotus Hotel in the same room if you make up your mind,” he said. Ela lowered her head. She wanted to tell him that she had made up her mind. After all, she wanted her mom to be treated so fast. However, she changed her mind. She shouldn't be too rushed, or she would get harmed. After all, she didn't want to use the same plan as yesterday. “Thank you,” she said. “I'll come looking for you once I make up my mind.“ Mike watched her until she disappeared into the distance. He had a complicated look on his face. He didn't know why he felt sorry for her. It was the first time he had ever had such a feeling. After a while, he shrugged and followed Joe. “Find someone to keep an eye on her and report everything she does,” he said. Joe nodded, but he looked conflicted. “Do you think she was telling the truth? Who do you think sent the letter?“ Mike shrugged. “We'll find it out soon,” he said. He didn't know why the girl's forlone image couldn't leave his mind. … When Ela returned to the hospital, her mother was awake. She couldn't hide her joy. In the last month, this was the second time her mom had been conscious. The rest of the time, she was unconscious. “Mom...” she called emotionally and rushed to hug her. “You are awake.“ “Ela,” her mom called with difficulty. She caressed her daughter's hand pitifully. “Don't torture yourself. I don't think I have long to live.“ Ela's throat became sore as tears welled in her eyes. “Don't talk nonsense, mom. I will find you a good doctor, no matter the cost.“ Mrs. Flurry sighed deeply. She knew her daughter was worried, so she didn't argue with her. Ela wiped her mom's face and looked at her with complicated emotions. “Mom, what kind of person is dad?“
