The moment I step back through the door, into the reception area, both Alesha and Jenny jump to their feet and come over, each taking an arm. “Are you okay? What could they tell you?” Jenny asks. “I’m okay, I think,” I say. “They didn’t tell me anything. I suppose I should have asked, but my brain’s a mess so it didn’t occur to me.” “Do you want to go back in and check? Or, if you like, I can do it and ask on your behalf,” Jenny offers. “I don’t think they’d give out any information to anyone else,” Alesha says, “but if you want to go back in, then I can go with you.” “Yes, please,” I reply. “We’ll all go,” Jenny adds. I’m quickly able to find the nurse who assisted the doctors’ examination. I ask if there’s any information she can tell me. “There’s not a lot I can say to you at the moment,” she replies. “We’ve taken blood samples and swabs and we have various other items we’ve identified for analysis. There’s also your clothing, which we’ll test. It will take some time until we get the results. A full report will be sent to the police.” “But you also checked me over, so what did you find? I’ve got no memory and I need to know. It’s tearing me apart imagining what someone’s done to me without me knowing anything.” “I don’t know how much I can help,” she replies. “There is no evidence of particularly violent s*x. You haven’t been brutalised, but that’s not to say you couldn’t have been r***d, particularly as there’s nearly a week you can’t account for. We hope to know more once we have the test results.” I think about what she’s said. I don’t feel like I’m any further forward. “Please tell me if you find out anything from your tests,” I ask, my voice trembling, imploring. She purses her lips and nods. How often must she receive such a request? I wonder.
