Chapter 6

Michaela POV “...but please give me a chance.” Those words played over and over in my head. I was still in college. I was just on vacation. How was I supposed to give this man I barely knew a chance when I was just going to leave. I didn’t respond, but looked away, not willing to make eye contact because if I did, I would probably say yes. We started walking back in silence, and believe me when I tell you, it was hella awkward. We got back to the car, and Anya and Jared sat up front, leaving me and Hunter in the back together. I was trying so desperately not to look at him, as we rode back to the hotel with the radio on quietly. I saw that he was looking out his window from the reflection and turned to see him. I don’t know what to do. Usually, I couldn’t give a crap about a guy's feelings or if I broke his heart, but Hunter was making me think twice. He seemed so sure that we were destined to be together and promised to treat me as a queen. How was I supposed to reject him? He caught me staring at him, and I quickly turned away. We got back to the hotel, and I thanked them for the food and stuff. Anya and I slowly trudged our way back to the room. “Anya?” I asked quietly. “Yeah?” “What are we gonna do?” “I don’t know, Chae, I don’t know.” “Anya, I shouldn’t care about breaking his heart, but I do. We’re still in college. I’m going off to the Air Force when I get out, and you’re going into the Army. They want us to stay here, with them. They want us to become part of their pack. Hunter wants me to be his, what was it? Oh, Luna, and you become the female something or other, but...” I trailed off not knowing what to say or do. My eyes started to fill with tears, and a single sob escaped my mouth. “Female Beta,” she said and walked over to me and hugged me. “Why don’t we go get some drinks at the bar?” “Okay,” I shrugged. I wasn’t really in the mood for drinking, but if it took my pain away, I was. We headed down the elevator to the hotel bar and sat down. “I’m going to need both of your IDs please,” the bartender said when we went to order drinks. After he checked our driver’s licenses, he took our orders. I had ordered a Pina Colada, thinking of the Garth Brooks song. After several Pina Coladas and a setting sail with Captain Morgan, we headed back to the room, feeling a bit drunk. We both laid down and fell asleep almost immediately. Hunter POV When she didn’t respond to me after I asked for her to give me a chance, I almost broke down in front of her. I knew that it was hard for her to make a decision. She was in college, on vacation, and clearly had a life. The car ride was long and painful. I could feel my mate’s sadness as she stared out the window, and I could do nothing about it. We dropped them off at the hotel and headed back to the pack. I entered the pack house, and headed to my office. I sat down, trying to do work to distract myself from what just happened. I heard a gentle knock on the door, and before I could turn whoever it was away, Sydney walked in. “Hey babe,” she said, seductively.  Ew, why did I ever like her? "What do you want, Sydney?"   "I think you know what I want, Alpha," she said walking up to me. "Sydney, I'm going to kindly ask you to leave if you don't have any pack related business to speak with me about.  I am not interested in you and do not want to be with you." "But-" I cut her off, "leave."  She slowly walked out of the room clearly hurt by my response, not that I really cared.  She was a sl*t who slept around when she was supposed to be with me.  I thought about making her my Luna when I couldn't find my mate, but when I heard about her sleeping with other guys, I quickly broke off the relationship.  She was convinced that I still liked her and was constantly trying to seduce me. My thoughts were interrupted when I heard a notification from my phone.  What now?  I glanced at my phone expecting a business related email or text, but it was from a number I didn't recognize.  I opened it up. Hey, was all it said.   Another text came through, This is Chaela. Me: O hey Chaela: Sry about earlier Me: Np Me: I get it ur not ready Chae: U seem like a nice guy Chae: It's just Chae: Im not at a point in my life where i can be what ur asking me 2 b Me: Would it be easier to explain if i called? Chae: I guess so I pressed the call button on the texts and waited for her to pick up. "Hello?" I heard her sweet voice. "Yeah, hi." "Look, Hunter...I am part of the ROTC program at Virginia Tech.  Next year I will be heading to the Air Force.  Anya will be going into the Army.  You basically asked me to give up everything I've worked so hard for to be your Luna.  I can't just do that, but I hate myself for even thinking twice about it.  I have never felt this about a guy.  Usually, I couldn't care less about breaking some random dude's heart, but I actually feel bad.  You seem like a really great guy, but you deserve better than me.  I'm just a random girl from Virginia on vacation with her friend.  I hope that when I head back home; you can find somebody else.  Someone who won't hurt you.  I'm sorry, but I'd be willing to stay in touch with you.  We could be friends, and...I don't know..." "Chae...I don't want to push you into something you're not ready for.  All I ask is that when you go back to college, you don't forget me." "Thank you for listening to me, Hunter.  Goodbye."  She hung up the phone after saying that.   I couldn't help it anymore, and could feel my eyes well up with tears.   Michaela POV After I hung up the phone I sat on the bed in silence.  Anya walked out of the bathroom, and I looked up at her. "Hey, who were you on the phone with?" She asked. "Hunter," I responded, "I told him about our situation.  Why do I feel this way about him?"   I let the tears roll down my cheeks.  It was like everything that had happened in my life finally caught up to me, and I couldn't hide my sadness anymore.
