Chapter 8

1145 Words
Hunter POV I needed to know what happened to my mate, but I couldn’t get in touch with her. I decided to call one last time even though she probably wouldn’t pick up. I heard the phone ring a few times, and then someone answered. “Hello?” A woman asked. “Hi,” I said, but didn’t know how to continue “Umm... Who is this?” The voice questioned. “I’m Chaela’s friend and was calling to check on her. We met while she was on vacation, and she headed home a few days ago but hasn’t been returning my calls. Is she okay?” I said, hoping it sounded believable. I knew something happened, but I couldn’t let this person know. “Yes, she’s perfectly fine.” “Are you sure?” “No she’s not fine, but I don’t know you and if you are some random guy interested in my sister, then I will not be giving you information about her. Goodbye.” “Wait,” I said hoping he wouldn’t hang up. “What?” He spat. He sounded pissed. “What happened? Where is she? Will she be okay?” “None of your damn business, but since you seem to care so much she’s in a hospital in Bristol,” he said and hung up. “Jared!” I yelled very loudly. He obviously heard as he came sprinting into my office. “What?” He asked, out of breath. “They’re in a hospital in Bristol. We can call the hospitals asking if they have any patients by her name.” “How did you figure that out?” “Her brother answered her phone, but he kind of hates me right now. We’ll have to see how this plays out, but for now we need to find our mates.” We sat down and each started calling hospitals. We eventually found one with them there. The woman on the phone informed us that Chae was in ICU, but Anya was just in a medically induced coma. s**t. Jared and I both went to our rooms, grabbed a few things and headed out to my Jeep. I mind-linked my Delta, Zach that he would be in charge while we were gone. We finally arrived at the hospital after a silent, tense drive. The drive was only two and a half hours, but it felt like a lifetime. We headed into the hospital and went to a woman sitting at the desk. "Hi, we're here to visit Michaela Brice and Anya Reed," I stated. "Are you family?" The woman asked. "They're our fiancées," I lied, hoping that would be enough. She agreed and gave us directions on how to get to them. We were waiting for the elevator, and we were both extremely tense. I got to Michaela's room and saw her laying on the bed. Her once bright, happy, and full-of-life face was now pale and emotionless. It was heartbreaking to see her like this. I heard the low beeping of all the machines monitoring her vitals and just stood there. I felt a single tear run down my cheek. I sat by her bed and held her cold hand. I don't know how long I sat there for, but eventually I fell asleep. I woke up in the morning still sitting in the chair I had by Chae's bed. In walked a man who is what I imagine Chae would look like as a guy. I guess this is her brother. He saw me and stormed over to where I was sitting. "Who are you?" He said, grabbing me by the collar and clearly trying not to shout. "I'm her friend," I responded, "my name is Hunter. I believe I spoke with you on the phone." "I thought I told you to stay away from my sister," he all but yelled. "You did, but-" I was cut off as a little girl who looked just like Chaela's brother ran in, but with blonde curly hair ran in the room. "Daddy?" She asked so innocently, "what's wrong with Aunt Chaela?" He let go of me but glared, as if to say he wasn't done. "Listen, Ally, she's just a little hurt. She'll be okay in a few days. Okay?" "Okay," she responded. She was so adorable. Then a very pregnant woman around the same age as Chae's brother came in the room. She had the same blonde curly hair as Ally. "Ally, we should be headi-" she stopped when she saw me sitting in the corner of the room. "And who might this be Tyler?" She asked looking at me. "This is Hunter. He's apparently Chae's friend," he stated, as if annoyed at me for existing. "Oh thank God. Chae is finally talking to some men. I thought she was going to be single for the rest of her life," Tyler's wife said. Well I assumed she was his wife anyways. "She should be single for the rest of her life," Tyler stated as if it were a fact. "Well, Hunter, ignore my husband. He's a bit over-protective of his little sister, but I am happy you met Chae. She is so sweet. I'm Sam by the way." "Yeah, nice to meet you," I said. "Well I need to get going. I get tired so easily from this pregnancy." She walked out of the room taking Ally with her, but Ally made sure to wave to me before leaving. Shortly after Sam and Ally left, a doctor walked in the room. "Michaela seems to be recovering faster now, and should be out of Intensive Care by tomorrow if not sooner, but we do not know when she will wake up from her coma," the doctor said. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. Chae would be out of ICU tomorrow. "Umm... Doctor...Phillips," I said looking at his name tag, "how badly was she injured?" "We will not know the extent of her injuries until she is awake, but almost all the bones in her left hand were broken in several places. Her right hand is a little better, but I also fear that she has suffered extreme nerve damage in her hands.  She is still healing from her second and third degree burns.  She broke several of her ribs, puncturing some of her inner organs causing bleeding.  Her heart has just stopped beating several times now, but she has actually been improving rapidly since last night." "O wow, that's a lot to take in."  I didn't know what else to say.  I decided to go check on Jared and Anya before Tyler killed me.
