Cold Night

1235 Words
Anna’s POV After carefully reading the letter, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of Sun Creek Ranch. As someone who has primarily worked in retail for many years, I am quite anxious about the prospect of performing hard labor. As I place the letter back into my backpack, I instinctively reach for my phone to check the time. To my surprise, it is only a little past 8 PM. I also notice a few unread text messages, but my current state of mind prevents me from being interested in their content. Instead, I turn off the light and prepare to go to sleep. The tranquility of the room offers a sense of peace, and I am hopeful that I can get some rest. As I slowly woke up from my deep slumber, I couldn't help but notice the unmistakable sounds of skin slapping and moaning. I reluctantly turned my head towards the other bunkbed, only to be greeted by the sight of Donnie in a rather odd s****l position with some random girl. I quickly grabbed my trusty zip up hoodie and backpack, and made a run for it out of the bedroom. But to my horror, my escape was blocked by the shocking sight of Carl balls deep in another woman, both of them covered in what looked like chocolate syrup and whipped cream. I glanced at the microwave clock, which read 11:33 PM. Panicked and traumatized, I struggled to open the front door of the bunkhouse, my mind racing with thoughts of how I could have avoided this whole awkward situation. Carl finally noticed my presence and nonchalantly exclaimed, "Oh hey, Anna! We did tell you that things were going to get freaky with our lady friends here." His words were punctuated by loud moans as he continued to pound in to the woman from behind, completely oblivious to my discomfort. As if things couldn't get any worse, Carl then had the nerve to ask, "We've been at it for a couple of hours now. You're just waking up?" He chuckled at his own joke, while the woman continued to moan in pleasure. I finally managed to escape the bunkhouse, my heart racing and my mind in a state of shock. I needed some peace and quiet to process what I had just witnessed, so I headed towards the horse barn, hoping to find solace in the company of the gentle creatures. I couldn't believe I had just witnessed a horror comedy of s****l encounters, and I knew I would never be able to look at Donnie and Carl the same way again. As I made my way into the horse barn, my hurried steps echoed off the walls, a stark contrast to the peaceful atmosphere within. The cold air nipped at my skin, causing me to pull my zipper hoodie tighter around me. Seeking solace, I made my way to a stack of Heybales and settled down, the rough texture of the hay beneath me. With only the dim light of an oil lamp to guide me, I rummaged through my backpack in search of the book I had been engrossed in for the past few weeks. However, to my dismay, I realized I had left it at Carter's. Disappointed, I decided to forgo reading and simply lay there, my eyelids growing heavy as I listened to the gentle sounds of the horses and other animals outside. Though the occasional rustle or strange noise made me a bit uneasy, I knew I needed to rest before starting my first day here. Just as I was beginning to drift off, I was startled by the arrival of Buster “ Denton’s dog. As Buster sniffed and licked my hand, I couldn't help but feel a sense of comfort and safety wash over me. Snuggling closer to the dog, I let myself sink into the very uncomfortable embrace of the Haybale, my mind slowly drifting into sleep. I was startled out of my peaceful slumber by Buster's excited barking and my foot being roughly shaken awake by a colossal hand. Slowly opening my eyes, I saw Denton's furious expression staring back at me. His voice was filled with anger as he demanded to know why I was sleeping outside in the freezing cold, wearing nothing but thin pajamas. I tried to joke and brush off his question, claiming I was just excited to start work. But Denton was not amused. He sternly ordered me to go back to the bunkhouse and change, questioning why I was even out here. Was I kicked out by the guys? His tone was laced with disbelief and anger. Feeling defensive, I explained that I had become uncomfortable in the bunkhouse with all the guys and their wild antics in the late hours of the night. I asked if there was another bunkhouse I could stay in or possibly have my own room somewhere. But before I could finish, Denton interrupted me, insisting that I stay in the bunkhouse since I was working on this particular part of the ranch. He warned me not to stay out here late at night due to the presence of wild animals and the harsh cold. His words were harsh and hurtful. I couldn't believe he was speaking to me like this. I was not some dumb girl who didn't know how to take care of myself. And I certainly didn't appreciate his raised voice and hurtful words. But Denton quickly realized his mistake and apologized, saying he didn't want me to get sick. I couldn't help but point out that he didn't even know me, so why did he care? Denton's expression softened as he admitted that he didn't care about me, he just didn't want to wait to find more help and fall behind on our workload. His words stung, but I tried not to let it show. Just as I was about to leave to change, Jason walked into the barn and noticed the tension between Denton and me. He asked what was going on, why was I still in my pajamas. Denton explained the situation and Jason immediately scolded me for risking my health for being stubborn. Feeling a little hurt by their comments, I agreed to go back to the bunkhouse, change, and be out here in 10 minutes. But before I could leave, Jason offered to go with me and make sure I was back in time. He even joked about being my boss, trying to lighten the mood. I couldn't help but smile and silently thank him for his kindness. As I walked back to the bunkhouse with Jason, I couldn't help but feel a sting of sadness and frustration. I told him the truth, that the guys were being disrespectful and loud, making it impossible for me to sleep. I apologized for causing any trouble, but Jason assured me he or Denton would talk to them about it. He even offered to talk to Denton about finding a better living arrangement for me. Feeling a little reassured, I quickly changed and made my way back to the barn. Denton and Jason were already hard at work, and I joined them with a renewed determination to prove myself to them. I may have started off on the wrong foot today , But I was determined to show them that I could handle anything they threw my way.
